Dysentery is a perilous and severe condition, concerning life and death. Not only do contemporary physicians often treat it inappropriately, but among the myriad treatment methods from ancient to modern times, most fail to grasp the essential principles, thus failing to achieve rapid and complete recovery. Why are the formulas established here considered "extraordinary" (Qi)? Because they do not adhere rigidly to conventional standard practices. Why are the theoretical arguments considered "wonderful" (Miao)? Because they do not stick dogmatically to established doctrines. However, the medicinal materials used are none other than commonly available ones. Those with insight must not arbitrarily alter them, nor be misled by mediocre physicians; following and applying these prescriptions will yield hundred-percent efficacy.
Decoction for Early Stage
Chuan Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove rhizome base, 1.2 qian) Tiao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.2 qian) Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1.2 qian) Shanzha Rou (Crataegi Fructus pulp, 1.2 qian) Chen Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium aged, remove pith, 0.8 fen) Zi Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, purple variety, remove bark surface 0.8 fen, stir-fry with ginger juice) Jian Binglang (Arecae Semen, firm variety, 0.8 fen) Nong Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, dense variety, remove pith, 0.8 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.5 qian) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian) Dyu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 0.5 qian) Honghua (Carthami Flos, wine-fried, 0.3 fen) Taoren (Persicae Semen, remove skin and pointed end, 1 qian, grind into powder) Nan Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.2 fen)
Cut the above ingredients into slices, process according to standard methods. Decoct with two bowls of water until one bowl remains. Take on an empty stomach. Decoct the dregs again and take. This formula is suitable for dysentery presenting with red or white discharge, tenesmus (Li Ji Hou Zhong), fever, and abdominal pain. If the discharge is purely white, remove Dyu and Taoren, add Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 0.4 fen) and Muxiang (0.3 fen); if stagnation and obstruction are severe, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), stir-fried with wine. Take for one or two doses; once the stagnation is cleared, discontinue use. If after one dose the stagnation is cleared, there is no need to take a second dose. When using Dahuang for young children, do not rigidly adhere to the 2 qian dosage. The above formula yields miraculous effects when used for three to five days, and is also effective when used for ten days. However, for conditions persisting beyond ten days or half a month, modifications are necessary. These are detailed below.
Modified Decoction
Chuan Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried, 0.6 fen; raw use 0.4 fen) Tiao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried, 0.6 fen; raw use 0.4 fen) Shanzha Rou (Crataegi Fructus pulp, 1 qian) Da Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, large variety, wine-fried, 0.6 fen; raw use 0.4 fen) Guang Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, broad variety, 0.4 fen) Nong Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, dense variety, 0.4 fen) Jian Binglang (Arecae Semen, firm variety, 0.4 fen) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 0.3 fen; raw 0.2 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.5 qian) Dyu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 0.4 fen) Taoren Fen (Persicae Semen powder, 0.6 fen) Honghua (Carthami Flos, 0.3 fen) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.2 fen)
Cut the above ingredients into slices, process according to standard methods. Decoct with two bowls of water until one bowl remains. Take on an empty stomach. Decoct the dregs again and take. If the condition persists for over a month and the Spleen and Stomach feel weak with loose, slippery stools, the treatment method should shift to tonification and regulation. The specific method is as follows:
Tonifying and Regulating Decoction
Chuan Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried, 0.6 fen) Tiao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried, 0.6 fen) Da Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, large variety, wine-fried, 0.4 fen) Guang Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, broad variety, 0.6 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.5 qian) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-fried, 0.5 qian) Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 0.5 fen)
Cut the above ingredients into slices, process according to standard methods. Decoct with water. Take on an empty stomach. Decoct the dregs again and take. For the above three formulas, if the patient is pregnant, remove Taoren, Honghua, and Binglang. The above three formulas are effective whenever used. Cases where they are ineffective are invariably due to the premature administration of tonifying agents such as Renshen and Baizhu in the early stages, which seals the pathogenic factor inside. Over time, the healthy Qi becomes deficient while the pathogenic factor becomes more vigorous, leading to lingering and persistent illness. At this stage, attempting to tonify and astringe will aid the pathogen, while attempting to clear and drain will worsen the looseness, eventually leading to incurable states. Even with extraordinary formulas, nothing can be done! This results from the initial misuse of warm-tonifying therapies.
