When applying moxibustion, if there is heavy fog, sudden snow or wind, torrential rain, intense heat, thunderstorms, or rainbows, temporarily suspend the procedure and wait for clear weather before resuming. During moxibustion, one must not be overly full or extremely hungry, must not drink to intoxication, must not consume raw or hard foods, and should avoid excessive thinking, sorrow, anger, cursing, sighing, and all other inauspicious behaviors; strictly observing these taboos brings great auspiciousness.
When treating the head and limbs with moxibustion, one should not apply excessive amounts of moxa, because the human body has 365 collaterals (Luo vessels), all of which converge at the head. The head is the meeting point of all Yang meridians. Excessive moxibustion on the head can cause dizziness, vertigo, and blurred vision. Since the muscles of the head and limbs are thin, simultaneous heavy moxibustion may cause stagnation or interruption of Qi and Blood under the moxa cone. Therefore, one should pause briefly to allow Qi and Blood to flow freely again before continuing. Once the prescribed number of cones has been applied, the disease will naturally resolve; this requires careful observation.
When treating the hairline, if the patient has a neat hairline, acupoints can be easily located according to the descriptions in *Mingtang* (Illustrated Manual of Acupuncture Points). If the patient has lost their hairline due to illness or was born without hair on the forehead and nape, locating points based on the hairline is difficult. It is now stipulated that the hairline is defined as three cun directly above the midpoint between the two eyebrows, using this as the standard.
When using direct moxibustion to treat diseases, regardless of the season, if the correct number of cones is applied and the moxa sore develops pus and ulcerates, the disease will heal. If the moxa sore does not develop or discharge pus, the disease will not resolve. The *Jia Yi Jing* states: For moxa sores that do not develop, heat an old shoe sole and apply it as a hot compress for three days to induce suppuration; once pus flows, the disease heals naturally. Currently, use three to five stalks of red-skin scallions, remove the green tops, roast them in ash until warm, crush them, and apply the warm scallion to the moxa sore for about ten repetitions. The sore will naturally develop within three days, discharging pus and curing the disease quickly.
After stopping the fire during direct moxibustion treatment, immediately decoct red-skin scallions and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) in water. Warmly wash the area surrounding the moxa sore (approximately one to two chi) to drive out pathogenic Wind from the wound and ensure unobstructed circulation of meridians below the sore, leading to natural healing. After the scab falls off, decoct equal parts of branches from the southeast tip of a peach tree and the bark of young willow twigs. Warmly wash the sore with this decoction; these two herbs specifically protect the sore from Wind pathogens. If the sore is black, rotten, and ulcerated, add Hu Su (Coriandri Fructus) to make three ingredients; decoct and wash warmly to promote healthy granulation tissue growth. If the pain from the moxa sore is unbearable and persists, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to make four ingredients; decoct and wash with this mixture for immediate and significant therapeutic effects.
