Small miscarriages (spontaneous abortion occurring before the 28th week of gestation) vary in timing. Those occurring in the second or third month are considered "early" (near), while those in the fifth or sixth months are considered "late" (far). A miscarriage shortly after conception is mild in severity, whereas one occurring after a long gestation is severe; this is common knowledge. However, there is an even earlier type: immediate loss following conception. In families currently struggling with infertility, five or six out of ten cases fall into this category. The root cause is invariably excessive indulgence in sexual activity. This fact has traditionally been unknown and disbelieved by people. I now use my pen as a lamp to guide the confused, hoping to benefit future generations, which is my sincere wish. Let me explain in detail.
When the fetus first begins to form, at one month it is like a drop of dew, at two months like a blooming peach blossom. By the third and fourth months, blood vessels and physical forms are established; by the fifth and sixth months, bones, sinews, hair, and nails grow. At the initial stage of conception, it is merely a single drop of precious essence (Jing). At this point, the fetal foundation is like a bellows without support, and the roots have no ground to anchor. If secured, it remains firm; if not, it flows away. Therefore, after conception, it is crucial to restrain sexual desire to prevent the leakage of essence. Yet, young men often indulge their passions without fear. Although many pregnancies are preserved despite weak fetal vitality, those with exceptional physical strength may rely on their robustness to avoid ejaculation, or resume intercourse immediately after ejaculation. During such times, while the woman seeks stillness, the man refuses to cease. Like a madman banging on doors, driven by the woman's yielding nature and passion, she opens up and follows the flow. At this moment, falling flowers fly together with pink butterflies, and fire dates escape along with cross-pear fruits; they mix and flow together, unaware that conception occurred yesterday and miscarriage today, or on the first day of the lunar month and loss by the full moon. Immediate loss following conception leaves no obvious traces. In "bright miscarriage," the fetus has formed, and the mother feels it; in "hidden miscarriage" (occult abortion), the fetus resembles water and slips away unnoticed. Thus, many families struggling with infertility do not have full-term births because of frequent small miscarriages. Men who marry prostitutes often have few children because their partners' uteruses are slippery and accustomed to miscarriage. I have seen men seeking prescriptions for infertility who claim they can perform sexually and last long, yet complain, "Everyone else has children, but I alone do not." They fail to realize that while others experience bright miscarriages, they suffer from hidden ones. Furthermore, women who miscarry repeatedly at three or five months, though common among frail women, most often do so due to unrestrained sexual activity damaging maternal Qi. Thus, those who overexert themselves physically often remain childless due to mutual destruction of strength. Those who indulge without restraint are often infertile because they steal and damage the Qi of the fetal origin. Is this solely the fault of women? Those seeking my prescriptions should read this section first; then half of the intent behind prescribing will be understood.
The tenth point discusses childhood, which is the critical timing for women. Just as buds form and calyxes open, vital energy has not yet fully expanded. Upon reaching puberty, Tian Gui (menstrual fluid/sexual maturity) is not yet abundant. Have you ever seen unripe grains serve as seeds? Can immature silkworms spin cocoons? Forcing effort and waiting until old age is futile; this shows a lack of understanding of timing.
The eleventh point discusses the Two Fires, which are the key to Yang energy in men and women. The Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo) resides in the Heart, which is the sovereign organ. The Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) resides in the Kidney, the root of the body. These two fires interact; silence meets no response. Therefore, the Heart should remain tranquil. If not tranquil, Fire moves due to desire, stimulating the Kidney from the Heart. Acting on the Heart first and then the Kidney burns Yin with Yang, arising from forced effort. Forced effort causes Qi to descend, leading to the loss of control over the Dantian and the loss of the true nature of Yuan Yang (Original Yang). The Kidney should be sufficient. When Kidney essence is full, Yang rises from the earth (lower body), affecting the Heart. Acting on the Kidney first and then the Heart uses Water to balance Fire, following nature. Natural movement causes Qi to ascend, reaching all meridians; this is the true mechanism of generation. However, frail men often resort to forced effort, thus frequently suffering from Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption). How can they expect offspring? Men of simple and rich constitution often follow natural laws, ensuring prosperity for all things; why worry about descendants? Gentlemen who understand timing must investigate the true mechanism of Yang Dao (sexual function/vitality).
