In summer, the heat of summer is blazing, and turbid dampness rises. When people are in an environment steamed by humid heat, if their righteous Qi (vital energy) is insufficient, they are most susceptible to disease. Moreover, in the south, the land is low and the air is thin, so there are more cases of Zhong Sha (acute vomiting and diarrhea caused by foul pathogenic factors) and symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Tracing the origin of the disease, it may be due to excessive indulgence in coolness, allowing wind-cold to invade from outside; or fatigue from travel, where summer-heat and dampness interfere with each other; or carelessness in diet, causing stagnation by cold and greasy substances; or irregular eating habits, leading to improper transportation and transformation of the Spleen and Stomach; or infection by epidemic pathogens of the season; or contact with foul and unrighteous Qi. All these can cause the Spleen Earth's transportation function to stagnate, Yin and Yang to become inverted, and ascending and descending functions to lose control. Suddenly, abdominal pain occurs, urgency above and below, cold limbs, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, sudden loss of body fluids, then the Zong Jin (tendons and ligaments) lose nourishment. Thus, leg cramps and muscle contraction begin in the two legs or appear in the four limbs, named Huo Luan Zhuan Jin (Cholera with convulsions). Life and death hang in the balance. In recent years, this condition has spread widely. Our county is narrow and densely populated, leading to mutual contagion, even resulting in multiple deaths in one family simultaneously, which is deeply terrifying. Therefore, I presume to propose a formula named Sheng Zhi Wan (Holy Cure Pill), to be prepared in advance for use upon entering summer. If one encounters epidemic diseases, simultaneous exposure to Sha and summer-heat, inhalation of foul air, or entry into a sickroom, feeling suspicious and anxious with chest stuffiness, immediately take one pill into the mouth to resolve foulness and expel pathogens, preventing Qi disorder. The formula uses Zheng Hao Xianju Yeshu (dried until dry but not burnt black) 2 liang, Zhen Chuan Houpo 2 liang, Bai Tanxiang (ground into fine powder) 1 liang, Jiangzhen Xiang (ground into fine powder) 1 liang, Xin Hui Pi (stir-fried with salt water) 2 liang. These five ingredients are ground together into an extremely fine powder. Then, using Guang Huoxiang (Patchouli Herba) 6 liang, decocted into a thick liquid, the powder is made into pills the size of large soybeans. Take 2-3 pills per dose, chew thoroughly, mix with saliva, and swallow. Yeshu has a sweet taste that harmonizes the Spleen and a bitter taste that dries dampness, stabilizes the Middle Jiao and stops vomiting, supports righteous Qi and expels pathogens, opens stomach Qi to remove accumulated fluids, so it is used as the Jun (Sovereign) herb; Houpo is bitter and acrid, able to drain excess and transform dampness, calm the Stomach and regulate the Middle, resolve phlegm and move water, and treat diarrhea, dysentery, vomiting, and nausea. Chenpi is a herb for regulating the Qi of the Spleen and Lung, capable of promoting diaphragmatic movement and guiding out stagnation, unblocking the Five Zang organs, and dispersing cold and releasing the exterior, so these two are used as the Chen (Minister) herbs; Tanxiang regulates the Spleen and benefits the diaphragm, aiding righteous Qi in expelling pathogens; Jiangxiang repels foul and strange Qi, so they are used as the Zuo Shi (Assistant and Envoy) herbs; Huoxiang possesses clear, mild, and fragrant Qi, being a key herb for reaching the Spleen and Lung. When Qi mechanism flows smoothly, rebellious pathogens settle naturally, so it is used as the Yin (Guide) herb. It is called "Sheng Zhi" because the Sages have the principle of treating disease and treating undiseased states (preventing disease before it occurs). Considering misfortune and preventing it, nothing is better than taking medicine before illness strikes, making mild cases resolve and severe cases become mild. This is undoubtedly a help to expelling disease and nurturing life. Tong Shuyuan said: Since this formula was released, many have compounded it, and its administration has proven effective. The drugs seem ordinary, but its detailed examination of flavors and precise understanding of functions make it truly perfect, far beyond what superficial practitioners can achieve.
