Book: Shoushi Zhuanzhen (Transmission of Longevity)
Author: Xu Wenbi
Dynasty: Qing
Chapter: Ten Taboos / Eighteen Injuries
Category: Health Preservation
[Source Text Translation]
Taboo 1: Avoid rising early without covering the head. The morning air is often filled with wind and dew; if the head is uncovered, cold pathogenic factors may enter the brain. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 2: Avoid seeking coolness in dark rooms. Rooms without sunlight exposure have heavy yin qi, which harms the body. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 3: Avoid sitting for long periods on damp ground. Damp qi tends to generate sores and toxins. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 4: Avoid wearing sweat-dampened clothes that are cold. Clothes become cold after sweating; wearing them invades the back and damages the Lungs. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 5: Avoid wearing clothes that have been heated by sun exposure. Clothes exposed to the sun for a long time retain heat toxicity; wearing them before the heat dissipates causes harm from this toxicity. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 6: Avoid fanning oneself while sweating. When sweating, all hair follicles (pores) are open; fanning allows wind pathogenic factors to invade. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 7: Avoid sleeping with candles lit. Candlelight disturbs the Shen (Spirit/Mind). Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 8: Avoid sexual intercourse during the Zi hour (11 PM to 1 AM). At this time, Yang Qi is initially generating but is suddenly extinguished by activity; one instance of such intercourse is more harmful than ten instances at other times. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 9: Avoid wiping bamboo mats with cold water in summer or heating clothes with hot fires in winter. Cold water introduces dampness; hot fire introduces heat toxicity. While providing momentary pleasure, it inevitably leads to illness over time. Therefore, this is taboo.
Taboo 10: Avoid watching theatrical performances for extended periods. Prolonged visual and auditory stimulation injures both Shen (Spirit) and Jing (Essence). Therefore, this is taboo.
Prolonged viewing injures Jing (Essence). The eyes rely on Blood to see; Jing is transformed from Blood. Thus, prolonged viewing injures Jing.
Prolonged listening injures Shen (Spirit). Shen is nourished by the Kidneys, and the Kidneys connect to the ears as orifices. Thus, prolonged listening injures Shen.
Prolonged lying down injures Qi (Vital Energy). During lying down, breathing through the mouth scatters Qi, while closing the mouth causes Qi stagnation. Thus, prolonged lying down injures Qi. The *Hunyuan Jing* states: "Awakening aligns Qi with Yang; sleep merges Qi with Yin. Much awakening strengthens Hun (Ethereal Soul); much sleep strengthens Po (Corporeal Soul). Those with strong Hun are people of life; those with strong Po are followers of death."
Prolonged sitting injures the Mai (Meridians/Vessels). Meridians require movement; sitting prevents the body from stretching. Thus, prolonged sitting injures the Meridians.
Prolonged standing injures the Bones. Standing relies primarily on the skeletal structure. Thus, prolonged standing injures the Bones.
Prolonged walking injures the Jin (Tendons/Sinews). Walking relies primarily on the strength of the Tendons. Thus, prolonged walking injures the Tendons.
Sudden anger injures the Liver. The Liver corresponds to Wood; anger is like a violent storm causing shaking. Thus, sudden anger injures the Liver. Furthermore, the Liver stores Blood; when injured, Blood fails to nourish, leading to tendon flaccidity (Jin Wei).
Excessive worry injures the Spleen. During thought and worry, the Spleen is active; excessive activity leads to Spleen fatigue. Thus, excessive worry injures the Spleen.
Extreme sorrow injures the Heart. The Heart corresponds to Fire and the bitter taste; sorrow intensifies bitterness. Thus, extreme sorrow injures the Heart.
Excessive grief injures the Lungs. The Lungs correspond to Metal and govern sound; prolonged grief and bitterness cause hoarseness. Thus, excessive grief injures the Lungs.
Overeating injures the Stomach. Fullness makes digestion difficult. Thus, overeating injures the Stomach.
Excessive fear injures the Kidneys. The Kidneys correspond to Water and the black color of the North; fright causes the face to turn black. Thus, excessive fear injures the Kidneys.
Excessive laughter injures the Waist. Laughter necessarily moves the Kidneys and vibrates the waist. Thus, excessive laughter injures the Waist.
Excessive speech injures Body Fluids (Ye). Too much speech causes dry mouth and bitter tongue. Thus, excessive speech injures Body Fluids.
Excessive spitting injures Jin (Thin Fluids). Jin originates in the Hua Chi (oral cavity/salivary glands), spreads to moisten, and irrigates the meridians. Spitting causes loss. Thus, excessive spitting injures Jin. Additionally, the *Xun Dian* states: "Do not spit out fluids; if saliva is present, swallow it to preserve Essence and Qi, resulting in radiant vitality."
Excessive sweating injures Yang Qi. Excessive sweating leads to the loss of Yang Qi, which exits with the sweat. Thus, excessive sweating injures Yang Qi.
Excessive weeping injures Blood. Blood is stored in the Liver; excessive crying damages the Liver and dries the eyes. Thus, excessive weeping injures Blood.
Excessive sexual intercourse injures Marrow. The male organ is connected by all meridians. When desire arises and intercourse occurs, the blood and marrow of the whole body are drawn to the Mingmen (Gate of Life) to transform into Essence and be discharged. Without regulating desire, this leads to exhaustion of bone marrow and loss of residence for True Yang, akin to a fish dying without water.
