(There are eleven clauses in total.)
The Liver corresponds to Wood. It flourishes in Spring. Its pulse is wiry (Xian). Its spirit is Hun (Ethereal Soul). Its manifestation is in the eyes. Its glory is reflected in the nails. Its nourishment is in the tendons (Jin). Its sound is shouting. Its odor is fishy/skunky (Sao).
Its taste preference is sour. Its fluid is tears. Its color is green. Its function is storing blood. The Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian is its affiliated meridian. It combines with the Gallbladder. The Gallbladder, as a Fu organ, governs the exterior; the Liver, as a Zang organ, governs the interior.
Excess Liver Qi results in surplus blood, leading to symptoms such as red eyes, pain in the hypochondriac regions radiating to the lower abdomen, and irritability. If Qi rebels upward, it causes dizziness, deafness, and swelling of the cheeks. This is Excess of Liver Qi, which should be treated by draining (Xie).
Deficiency of Liver Qi leads to symptoms such as blurred vision, stiffness and spasm in the hypochondriac regions, tendon cramps, inability to take deep breaths, dry nails, and a cyan complexion. There is also excessive sadness and fear, feeling as if being pursued. This is Deficiency of Liver Qi, which should be treated by tonifying (Bu).
In the four seasons, Liver diseases heal in Summer. If they do not heal in Summer, they worsen in Autumn. If death does not occur in Autumn, the condition stabilizes in Winter, and begins to recover in Spring.
Regarding the Heavenly Stems, recovery occurs on Bing and Ding days (Fire). If not recovered on Bing/Ding days, the condition worsens on Geng and Xin days (Metal). If death does not occur on Geng/Xin days, the condition stabilizes on Ren and Gui days (Water), and begins to recover on Jia and Yi days (Wood).
During the day, clarity prevails at dawn (Pingdan), worsening in the late afternoon (Xabu), and quieting at midnight (Zi Ban). One must avoid exposure to wind.
The Liver pulse position is at the Guan (Cun) position on the left hand. At the Guan position, the pulse comes and goes gracefully, like pressing the strings of a zither or lifting a long pole. In Spring, Stomach Qi is fundamental. In Spring, Liver Wood is flourishing, and its pulse is wiry, thin, and long; this is a Normal Pulse (Ping Mai).
If instead a faint, choppy, and short pulse is obtained, this is Lung Metal overacting on Liver Wood (Metal overcoming Wood), termed "Thief Evil" (Ze Xie). This is a great reversal and is difficult to cure.
If instead a floating, large, and surging pulse is obtained, this is Heart Fire overacting on Liver Wood (Child overacting on Mother), representing Excess Evil. Although sick, recovery is expected.
If instead a deep, soft, and slippery pulse is obtained, this is Kidney Water overacting on Liver Wood (Mother overcoming Child), representing Deficient Evil. Although sick, recovery is expected.
If instead a moderate and large pulse is obtained, this is Spleen Earth overacting on Liver Wood (Earth suppressing Wood), representing Minor Evil. Although sick, death will not occur.
When the Liver pulse arrives full, solid, and slippery, like tracing a long pole, it is called a Normal Pulse or mild disease. When the Liver pulse arrives rapid and vigorous, like a newly strung bowstring, it is called a Liver Death Pulse.
When the True Liver pulse arrives, tight inside and out like touching a knife's edge, sounding crisp like a newly strung bowstring, with a cyan-white complexion lacking luster, and brittle hair, the patient will die.
