Black color appears below the Xuanzhen line (the vertical wrinkle between the eyebrows). Even Lu Yi (Bian Que, a metaphor for a divine physician) would feel afraid. When sudden abdominal pain occurs accompanied by a bluish nose, there is no need to seek further medical treatment. Blue color extends horizontally from the eyes into the ears. This sign indicates death. Black color surrounds the mouth and connects to the eyes; it will soon be determined that survival is impossible. Black color appearing between the eyebrows is also inauspicious; death will inevitably occur within ten days. If black color on the Renzhong point (the groove between the nose and upper lip) extends into the mouth, the child will be buried in the underworld. In patients with edema, if the tip of the nose (Zhuntou) turns black, this reports the extinction of Kidney Qi. In coughing diseases, white color invading the eyebrows must be avoided; this signifies the exhaustion of Lung Qi, which you should know. If the nose turns white when the child vomits, life is severed and cannot be regained. In stroke diseases, a face resembling makeup (abnormal ruddiness) must be avoided; how can one live long? Sunken eyes without luster combined with fixed staring indicate certain death within three days. Furthermore, when the pupils do not move, this is a sign of death that you should know. Eyes that appear half-open and half-closed are also a medium of death. Complete lockjaw preventing any intake of milk or food means the disease will ultimately not recover. Excrement resembling bloody urine indicates the orphan will not survive. Continuous vomiting that stops and restarts repeatedly; do not labor your heart to care for them. Dysentery lasting long with no appetite, even eating human flesh, eventually leads to being neighbors with death. Diarrhea and dysentery that cease and recur again indicate imminent death. Difficult urination accompanied by extreme thirst ultimately makes survival unlikely. Stool that remains completely unpassed even after medication renders Bian Que powerless. Black spots appearing on sores on the ears; physicians have no such skill. Long-term coughing leading to cold extremities throughout the body; there is no way to awaken. Body heat often accompanied by sleep from which one cannot wake; do not waste your spirit. After the eruption of smallpox/rubella, if fever does not subside, this sign should be harmful. When excreting continuous black-green feces, there is no need to seek good physicians. After long-term thirst, adding dryness-thirst indicates life will surely be hard to save. Abdominal swelling with coarse breathing ultimately means life will not revive.
Pulse at Taichong (LR3) is absent. The mouth is full of dry saliva. Black sweat appears on the body. The tongue shrinks and develops sores. The five centers (two palms, two soles, and the chest) are convex and swollen. Black blood is discharged. Erysipelas covers the whole body. Diarrhea stops and then resumes. Fixed staring at people. Black face with mania. Startled screaming and biting. Unstopping vomiting and diarrhea. Fish-mouth breath, coarse respiration. Dry, black, and parched nose. Suddenly making crow-like sounds. Crying without tears. Eyes half-open. Emaciated limbs. Panting without sound. Large abdomen with exposed blue veins. Cold extremities. Sweat beads do not flow. Lips everted and tongue retracted. Scratching at people. Shaking head and moving the neck. Fontanelle sunken like a pit. Saliva sounding like a sawing motion. Bent waist and protruding abdomen. Cold air from nostrils. All these patients will die. The above are all signs of death, difficult to treat. Do not indulge the condition.
