The first discussion addresses neonatal tetanus (Tai Jing). This condition arises from the pregnant woman's improper lifestyle management, inappropriate dietary desires, or anger and fright leading to falls. When the mother is stimulated, the fetus inevitably senses these influences. Alternatively, external wind pathogens may injure the fetus. Consequently, the infant inherits the maternal pathological qi and falls ill immediately after birth. The symptoms include fever within the first month, rolling eyes, clenched fists, trismus (lockjaw) with teeth grinding, stiffness and rigidity of the body and waist, excessive salivation with vomiting, convulsions with startled crying, retracted cheeks, and an open fontanelle. Some infants may present with a red cheek or a cyanotic face with closed eyes. Conditions such as trismus and torticollis are also manifestations of this etiology.
Observing the color of the area between the eyebrows: if the complexion is bright red with a bluish tint, it is treatable and the patient can survive. If there are dark blue-black spots, it is untreatable. Examining the fingerprint on the tiger's mouth (the radial side of the thumb): if the vein curves inward, it is treatable; if it extends outward, it is untreatable. Treatment should focus on dispersing wind pathogens, relieving惊 (startle), resolving phlegm, and regulating qi. Qingjin Wan (Blue Gold Pill) is the primary formula. It is crucial not to mistake this for slow convulsion syndrome and use warming medicines.
Qingjin Wan (Blue Gold Pill): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, baked), Bai Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, peeled and core removed), Bai Fuzi (Aconiti Radix Preparata, processed), Niu Dan Nan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile, each 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1.5 qian), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, 1 qian), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, water-triturated, 0.5 qian), She Xiang (Musk, 1 fen).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Administer by dissolving the pill in a decoction of Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) and Zao Jia Zi (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina). Take at any time without restriction.
The second discussion addresses Su Du (Locked Belly). This results from severe heat-toxin accumulation in the abdomen, causing obstruction of both urination and defecation, leading to stagnation at the anus and extreme abdominal distension. Immediately have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water and perform cupping-like suction on seven areas of the infant: the anterior chest, posterior back, below the umbilicus, and the palms and soles of both hands and feet. Repeat three to five times until the skin becomes reddish. Defecation will naturally resume shortly thereafter. Without this intervention, the infant has no chance of survival. Recognizing this method offers a path to regeneration for infants with this condition.
The third discussion addresses Bu Ru (Failure to Suckle). This refers to the newborn's inability to suckle milk upon exiting the womb. When the infant is born and before crying, one should immediately wipe the oral cavity to ensure all foul blood is cleared and not swallowed. If done correctly, no other diseases will arise. If the oral cleaning is incomplete, foul matter enters the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and refusal to suckle. Alternatively, if the mother excessively consumes cold foods, the fetus may be chilled in utero, leading to infant abdominal pain. The appropriate treatment is Fu Ling Wan (Poria Pill).
Fu Ling Wan (Poria Pill): Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria, peeled), Chuan Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, hair removed), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, pith removed and stir-fried, equal parts).
Grind into powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in breast milk.
