Zhu Danxi stated: Fugu Ju (bone-abscess, a suppurative disease deep in the bone) is caused by long-term consumption of rich and greasy foods, overexertion, or wading in water after drinking alcohol. It is a syndrome where Yang Qi stagnates in Yin. He further stated that persistent pain at the Huantiao (GB30) acupoint can lead to Fugu Ju. Treatment should use Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) as the sovereign herb, assisted by the pungency of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), combined with Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) to move Qi. In winter, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); in summer, add Tiaoqin (Scutellariae Radix). For those with deficient constitution, add Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), with Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) as an assistant herb. Decoct these herbs in large quantities, add Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice), and drink before meals.
If the pain is severe, fearing that ten to twelve doses of the previous prescription may not induce dispersal, add a small amount of Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba). If there is no effect after one or two doses, fearing the abscess is about to form, urgently dig a pit in the ground, heat it red-hot with fire, pour urine into it, and have the patient sit naked in the pit. Surround the lower body with mats or cotton clothes so that the heat steams the body, opening the Couli (pores/skin texture), allowing Qi and Blood to flow freely, leading to recovery.
Another discussion: Sores appearing on the lateral side of the leg may be due to Cold-Dampness, resulting in Fugu Ju in the Foot-Shaoyang channel, slightly invading the Foot-Yangming channel. The presentation involves hardness and diffuse swelling, pain upon walking, or inability to walk.
Neituo Huangqi Tang (Internal Supportive Decoction with Astragalus): Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Dalizi (Arctii Fructus), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 8 fen). Chop the above ingredients. Decoct with one cup of water and one cup of wine until reduced to one cup. Take warm before meals.
A treatment for Fugu Ju: Huanglian Xiaodu Yin (Coptis Detoxification Decoction). Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 1 qian); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 5 fen); Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 4 fen); Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sumu (Pterocarpi Santalinus Lignum), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 2 fen). Cut the above nineteen herbs into one dose, decoct with water, and take orally.
An elderly man aged seventy contracted Fugu Ju on the lateral aspect of his left leg, in the region of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel, slightly invading the Foot-Yangming channel, due to Cold-Damp earthy qi. The mass was six to seven cun wide and one chi long, hard and diffusely swollen, with unclear muscle color and skin luster. He experienced pain upon walking and severe pain when pressing with fingers down to the bone. One dose of this medicine stopped the pain immediately; the next day, the hardness and swelling subsided, and he recovered.
Another discussion: Stubborn and malignant sores that do not heal for years are due to necrotic bone attached inside. First, wash the area with a thick decoction of Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), scrape off the putrid flesh, and use a knife to dislodge the attached necrotic bone. Alternatively, mash five or six dung beetle brains and apply them topically; the bone will then extrude. Then, take Wuyan (Realgar/Arsenic compound, specifically refined arsenic trioxide here referred to as 'human speech/mineral'), 5 li, grind into fine powder, place in a brass lamp basin, add one small cup of good vinegar, and slowly boil dry. Collect the residue. After three days, verdigris (copper acetate) will form on the surface. Grind this into an extremely fine powder, dip a chicken feather in the medicine, and sweep it onto the sore. This will immediately cause pain and discharge fluid, removing all putrid flesh. Then use the following prescription:
Zhenzhu Xiangya Gao (Pearl and Ivory Paste) (Transmitted by Bin Jiang from Chuhuang): Zhenzhu (Pearl) (Place pearls between two slices of tofu, bind tightly, boil in water for the time it takes to burn three incense sticks, then grind into fine powder, 1 qian); Xiangya Mo (Ivory Powder) (1 qian); Tianhuafen Powder (Trichosanthis Radix Powder) (5 fen); Gongfen (Lead White) (1 qian); Bala (Beeswax) (1 qian); Xiangyou (Sesame Oil) (5 qian). Mix all together, place in a bowl, melt and clarify over a double boiler into a paste. Spread on paper and apply to the affected area. Miraculous effect.
A treatment for severe pain in various sores, where muscle color is indistinguishable, presenting with diffuse swelling and brightness, named Fugu Yong (Bone-Abscess). Also treats sores that fail to close for a long time. Take mixed with wine. Sansheng San (Three Lives Powder): Lufengfang (Vespa Nidus), Shetui (Ophiopogonis Molt/Shed Snake Skin), Luankou (Tangle of Human Hair) (wash clean, equal parts). Burn the above three ingredients to ash while preserving their medicinal properties, grind into powder, and take 1.7 qian mixed with wine.
