Pediatric patients may suffer from "brain-heat pouring into the eyes" (pathogenic heat attacking the eyes), resulting in dry and itchy eyelids that are frequently closed and difficult to open. There are also cases where foreign bodies enter the eye, becoming lodged and unable to be removed. Additionally, there are instances of ocular injury caused by accidental impact or contact with various objects. The following prescriptions are described for these conditions.
To treat brain-heat pouring into the eyes, causing frequent inability to open the eyelids: Use one fen of Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Dahuang), coarsely chopped, soaked in three he of water overnight. For a one-year-old infant, administer half a he daily; apply the remaining liquid to the vertex of the head. Reapply when dry. Adjust the dosage according to the child's age and condition.
To treat lodged wheat awns entering the eye: Cover the eye with a new cloth. Hold a larva of *Melolontha* (Qicao) and rub it on the cloth. The awn will detach and adhere to the cloth. This method is highly effective.
Another prescription for treating various foreign bodies lodged in the eye: Grind high-quality ink stick with clear water to obtain juice. Apply this juice using a copper vessel into the eye; the foreign body will be expelled.
Another prescription for treating ocular injury due to impact: Apply urine from a cow into the eye twice daily. Avoid exposure to wind. Even if the cornea is damaged, healing will occur.
The Lung meridian connects with the nose. When Qi mechanism is disharmonious and invaded by Wind-Cold, stagnation occurs in the nasal cavity. This pathogen interacts with body fluids, causing mucus to condense and obstruct flow. Consequently, Qi circulation becomes impaired, leading to anosmia (loss of smell), a condition termed Nasal Obstruction (Bisai).
If Wind-Cold interacts with Blood and Qi, generating fleshy growths that cause blockage, it is called Nasal Polyp (Bi Feng). If Wind-Dampness interacts, sores may form inside the nose with purulent discharge. If Brain-Heat attacks the nasal cavity causing dryness, or generates sores with scabs, the tissue becomes hard without purulent discharge.
Xinyi San (Magnolia Flower Powder)
Indicated for Nasal Obstruction.
Flos Magnoliae Biondii (Xinyi Ye) - 1 liang, washed and dried; Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) - 0.5 liang, roots removed; Akebiae Caulis (Mutong) - 0.5 liang; Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) - 0.5 liang; Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) - 0.5 liang (these five herbs are ground into powder); Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren) - 1 fen, soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed, then ground (added last).
Grind the first five herbs into powder and mix well. Combine with two liang each of Marrow Bovis (Yangsui) and Adip Sus (Zhuzhi). Slowly simmer together in a stone or silver vessel until a paste forms, turning reddish-yellow. Add a small amount of Borneolum Syntheticum (Naobing) and Moschus (Shexiang), stir evenly, and allow to cool. Apply a small amount into the nasal cavity. For infants under breastfeeding age suffering from nasal obstruction due to wind exposure at the fontanelle, apply only to the fontanelle.
Juhua San (Chrysanthemum Powder)
Indicated for Nasal Obstruction with turbid rhinorrhea.
Flos Chrysanthemi Indici (Gan Juhua) - selected and cleaned; Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) - rhizome and branched twigs removed; Peucedani Radix (Qianhu) - rhizome removed (both 1 liang); Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) - roots removed; Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) - 0.5 liang each; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) - roasted, 1 fen.
Grind into powder. Take half a qian per dose, add a small amount of Succinum (Ruxiang), and take with decoction of Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie) after meals.
Jili Zi San (Tribulus Seed Powder)
Indicated for Nasal Obstruction with loss of smell and continuous watery rhinorrhea. Take half a handful of Fructus Tribuli (Jili Zi), grind into fine powder. Decoct with one small cup of water until reduced by half. Have the patient lie supine, fill the mouth with a mouthful of rice, and instill the medicinal juice into the nasal cavity. Within no more than two applications, sneezing will occur, restoring airflow. This condition is found in older children but not in infants.
For treatment of nasal sores with pus: Collect debris from the ear of a black ox. First, clear all pus from the nasal cavity, then apply the debris.
