[English Translation]
Infants who fall ill from birth up to around one month of age are mostly suffering from conditions caused before birth. During the mother's pregnancy, if she consumed toxic substances, the fetus was affected by them. After birth, the toxic qi manifests as disease.
There are also cases where the mother neglected proper care and nourishment during pregnancy, failing to fully fill the fetus with qi and form, leading to illness. Thus, the *Shengji Jing* states: "Diseases born within are present from birth." The following is a discussion of these conditions.
**Geng She (Tongue Tie)**
When an infant is just born, while someone wipes the foul matter from the mouth, carefully examine the infant's mouth. If there is a membrane, similar to the membrane inside a reed tube, wrapping the tongue or connecting to the root of the tongue, this is called "Geng She" (Tongue Tie). It arises from the attack of fetal toxicity. It may also be caused if the mother craved and ate birds during pregnancy, affecting the fetus. One must immediately puncture and peel off the membrane with fingernails, wipe clean the blood, and apply fine powder of calcined alum (Bai Fan), about half the size of a mung bean. If not removed, it will obstruct the tongue, preventing speech and causing muteness. Furthermore, after many days, it becomes impossible to remove.
**Qi Bi (Qi Closure)**
Within one or two days after birth, if an infant has no urination or defecation, and the abdomen is distended and full to the point of seeming lifeless, this is caused by the depression and closure of fetal toxic qi. Immediately find a woman, have her rinse her mouth with warm water, then suckle the infant's anterior chest, back, below the navel, and palms and soles of hands and feet—seven areas in total. Suckle each area five to seven times until the skin turns red. After a moment, the qi will disperse, and passage will naturally open. If this does not work, there is no hope for life. Using this method for such symptoms can be considered bringing the child back to life.
**E Kou (Goose Mouth / Thrush)**
From birth to around seven days later, due to fetal toxicity attacking upward, white flakes like rice grains appear on the tongue, extending to yellow sores at both corners of the mouth. Additionally, a membrane the size of a pomegranate seed forms under the tongue, preventing the infant from making sound. This is named "E Kou" (Goose Mouth).
**Baoming San (Life-Preserving Powder)**
Treating infant goose mouth.
Bai Fan (Alum, 1 fen, calcined)
Maya Xiao (Mirabilite, 0.5 liang, finely ground)
Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 fen, finely ground, levigated with water and dried)
Grind all ingredients together into a uniform fine powder. For each dose, take an amount equivalent to "yi zi" (approx. 0.3-0.5g). Take feces from a white goose, mix with water to extract the juice, and use it to dissolve the powder. First, wrap fingers with loose hair and wipe the infant's tongue, mouth corners, and cheeks to remove dirt and filth. Then apply the medicine evenly. When wiping with wrapped fingers, use well water or cotton-wrapped fingers dipped in walnut juice.
To treat infant goose mouth preventing feeding, grind Maya Xiao finely and sprinkle it over the upper and lower tongue, and inner/outer cheeks and mouth corners. Apply three to four times daily.
Another prescription: Use juice from Mulberry Cortex (Sang Bai Pi) mixed with lead carbonate (Hu Fen) for application.
Another prescription: Burn the yellow skin from a chicken gizzard (Ji Gang), grind to fine powder, and mix with milk for application.
Another prescription:灌 (irrigate/pour) the juice of white goose feces into the mouth.
Another prescription: Apply millet juice.
Another prescription: Use seven whole Scorpions (Quan Xie). Soak in Mint Juice (Bohe Zhi) first, then wrap in seven mint leaves. Roast with gentle heat, dry, and grind to powder. Add Minium (Huang Dan), grind uniformly, and mix with refined honey to make a paste for application.
**Chui Yong (Hanging Abscess)**
From birth to around seven days later, due to fetal toxicity attacking upward, blood and qi fail to consolidate. An object grows in the infant's mouth, extending from the upper part to the throat and tongue, resembling a reed husk holding water. It may grow in front of the uvula, blocking the airway and endangering the infant. This is named "Chui Yong". Infants dying immediately upon birth often suffer from this disease, though few know of it. Immediate examination is required.
For this disease, immediately break it with fingernails or pierce it with a long needle wrapped in cotton, leaving a tip the size of a millet grain. Releasing the qi will save the infant. Upon rupture, green-yellow bloody fluid will emerge. Wipe clean with a cloth, and cleanse thoroughly with salt water-soaked cloth. Be extremely cautious that liquid does not enter the throat, as it will harm the infant. If it recurs after one piercing, pierce again.
**Rusheng San (Like-Sage Powder)**
Treating Chui Yong.
Qianshuang (Lead Frost, 1 fen, finely ground)
Zhen Niuhuang (Real Calculus Bovis/Ox Gallstone, 1 fen, finely ground)
Taiyin Xuanjingshi (Taiyin Black Crystal/Gypsum Fibrosum variant, 1 fen, finely ground)
Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 fen, finely ground, levigated with water and sun-dried)
Re-grind all ingredients uniformly. Mix in Ban Xia Long Nao (Borneol) fine powder, half a qian. Each dose is one to half a qian, sprinkled into the infant's mouth.
**Chong Yin / Chong She (Double Gums / Double Tongue)**
From birth to around seven days later, due to fetal toxicity attacking upward in the mouth. If swelling occurs above the gums, appearing double-layered, it is named "Chong Yin" (Double Gums). If swelling occurs on both sides of the upper and lower gum lines, resembling piled gums, it is also named "Chong Yin". If swelling rises on the tongue, initially forming a small extra tongue, it is named "Chong She" (Double Tongue). The swelling causes pain and discomfort, leading to excessive crying, inability to feed, and obstruction.
Treatment for Chong Yin and Chong She: Burn Snake Slough (She Tui Pi) to ash, grind to fine powder, and apply.
Another prescription: As above, but use raw Pollen Typhae (Pu Huang) powder for application.
**Wugu San (Black Bone Powder)**
Treating Chong She with swelling and discomfort, hindering sucking.

Gan Qiang Lang (Dried Dung Beetle, 0.5 liang, burned to ash)
Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae, 0.5 liang, ground)
Ku Bai Fan Hui (Ash of Calcined Alum, 1 liang, ground)
Grind all together into a powder. Each dose is half a qian, mixed with egg yolk and applied to the swelling. Swallowing saliva is harmless.
Another prescription: As above, use Snake Slough powder, dry-rubbed onto the affected area under the tongue. It subsides quickly. If unable to drink milk, using this restores ability. Alternatively, dip a chicken feather in strong vinegar, apply medicine, and sweep under the tongue.
Another prescription: Use Magnolia Bark (Mu Lan Pi), one chi long and four cun wide. Remove rough bark, soak in one sheng of vinegar to extract juice, and drip onto the lesion.
Another prescription: Use Fu Long Gan (Dragon's House Earth/Cooked Soil) finely ground, mixed with Arctii Fructus Juice (Niu Bang Zi Zhi) for application. Or apply Doryphora (Yi Yu/Clothes Moth) to the tongue.
Another prescription: Apply Maya Xiao powder under the tongue, three times daily.
Another prescription: Use meat from three different slaughterhouses, cut finger-sized, and rub on the tongue.
Another prescription: Place Minium (Huang Dan) the size of a soybean in a tube and blow it under the tongue.
Another prescription: Apply Pu Huang. Cures within three applications. Another method: Lightly stir-fry Pu Huang, spread on paper to remove fire toxicity, sieve finely. First, dip a cloth-wrapped finger in warm water and gently sweep, then apply powder.
Another prescription: Boil Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Cortex) to a thick decoction, apply to nipple for infant to suck.
Treating severe Chong She causing suffocation: Burn loose hair to ash, grind finely, apply under tongue frequently. Or burn winnowing basket skin and apply.
Another prescription: As above, roast Deer Antler (Lu Jiao), apply while warm for moxibustion-like warming. Or place pieces the size of millet grains under the tongue.
Another prescription: Decoct Vigna angularis (Chi Xiao Dou) juice, mix with Deer Antler ash for application, three times daily. Or mix Chi Xiao Dou powder with vinegar and apply to tongue.
Another prescription: Burn Honeycomb (Lu Feng Fang) to ash, grind finely, mix with vinegar to make a paste for application.
**Ru Chuang (Maternal Ward Sores)**
From birth to around seven days later, due to fetal toxicity erupting, sores appear on the body. This is named "Ru Chuang", meaning sores arising from the birthing mat/grass.
Treatment for Ru Chuang: Grind Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) to fine powder. Coat a cup with raw Sesame Oil (Sheng Ma You), sprinkle Huang Lian powder over the oil, invert the cup over a tripod stove, and smoke-dry thoroughly with Mugwort (Ai Ye) fire. Scrape the residue, mix with a little raw oil and Nifeen (calamine/zinc oxide), and apply as a paste.
Another prescription: Chew fresh Ze Lan (Lycopus Herb) heart and apply.
Another prescription: Burn Abutilon Root (Kui Gen) to ash and apply.
Treating infants born three days old with head/face sores, high fever, excessive crying:
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma)
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove sprouts)
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each 1 fen)

Grind to coarse particles. Each dose is one qian, decocted in half a zhan of water down to two fen. Strain and administer frequently, adjusting dosage by infant size.
Treating newborns with hot sores in the maternal ward: Crack five eggs, discard whites, keep yolks. Add loose hair the size of an egg yolk. Simmer in a pot, collect the liquid, and apply. Also dust with Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) powder. Very effective. Liu Yuxi stated: In Wuling, I had a son who developed hot sores in the maternity ward, spreading from arms/legs to half the body. Other medicines failed; symptoms were severe, with day-and-night crying and refusal to feed. Consulting Materia Medica, it says: Loose hair boiled with egg yolk treats infant convulsive fever and dysentery. Note: Removes phlegm-heat and hundred diseases. Egg yolk also treats hot sores. Using this worked miraculously. Method: Egg yolk and loose hair start dry in the pot; soon the hair chars and liquid emerges. Collect immediately in a porcelain bowl until liquid is exhausted.
**Kou Jin (Locked Jaw)**
From birth to around seven days later, sudden locking of the jaw, inability to suck, abdominal urgency, excessive crying, passage of dark green/black stool, or oral sores like rice grains. This is named "Kou Jin". The jaw is tight and locked, similar to "Cuo Kou" (Pinched Mouth). However, Cuo Kou presents with blue complexion, silent crying, and foaming at the mouth. Kou Jin presents with red complexion, excessive crying, and no foam. The difference lies here. This is caused by wind-heat damaging the fetus in the womb. Thus, *Shengji Jing* says: Wind-heat damages the fetus, resulting in Kou Jin at birth. *Qianjin Fang* says: Red indicates Heart Jin, White indicates Lung Jin.
**Lisheng San (Establishing Sage Powder)**

Treating infant Kou Jin, locked jaw: Roast Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) until cooked. Quickly seal edges with paper to prevent air escape. Wrap in paper, cut a hole the size of a cocklebur at the top tip to allow heat out. Smoke the nostrils with the heat. Jaw opens immediately. Also treats Cuo Kou.
**Yue Ti (Groaning Cry)**
Since birth, if the infant has a blue-white complexion, lacks blood color, cries constantly day and night, arches the body stiffly (worsening at night), has abdominal distension, refuses milk, passes blue-white stool, and cries day and night despite various medicines, this is named "Yue Ti". It is caused by wind-cold damaging the fetus in the womb before birth. Thus, *Shengji Jing* says: Wind-cold damages the fetus, resulting in Yue Ti at birth. *Qianjin Fang* states: Infants with Fetal Cold have abdominal pain and Yue Ti, frequent spitting/vomiting, or a mass in the abdomen like an egg yolk that disappears on pressure with a water-like sound, then returns. Adjust by infant size until cured. Removes phlegm. Highly effective. Also treats abdominal distension, poor appetite, and blue-yellow stool.
**Xue Pi (Blood Stasis / Named Tai Ji)**
Before birth, the fetus relies on maternal menstrual blood for nourishment. At birth, foul blood in the mouth must be wiped away, and medication used to purge foul blood/feces from the intestines before feeding. If foul blood is not fully wiped and swallowed, or if original intestinal waste is not purged or incompletely purged, stasis forms. Hence named Xue Pi, also known as Tai Ji (Fetal Accumulation). Within 100 days after birth, the infant develops head sores, red gritty eyes, urine like blood, rapid breathing, purple body color, abdominal distension, restlessness, excessive crying, and refusal to feed.

One or two doses should result in passage of foul matter in stool, indicating efficacy. Also have the nursing mother take harmonizing Qi medicine to regulate diet. If the infant vomits incessantly after medication, has constipation, black face, and panting, death ensues.
**Tai Chi Yan (Fetal Red Eyes)**
After birth, once eyes open, if the canthi and eyelids are red and ulcerated, it is named "Tai Chi Yan". This is caused by difficult labor prolonging retention, or careless handling, allowing foul blood into the eyes. Or, failure to fully wipe foul blood from eye corners at birth allows entry into the eyes, causing this disease. If not treated urgently, it will not heal even in adulthood.
**Erjin San (Two Metals Powder)**
