The abdominal skin and pores (skin texture and follicles) of infants are flaccid and thin. When invaded by wind-cold pathogenic factors, if the true Qi is weak and unable to nourish the blood and Qi, resulting in a lack of nourishment, the pathogenic factors adhere and do not disperse. Consequently, the abdominal skin suddenly turns cyanotic and black. This condition is critical and ominous; the following prescriptions are described.
Ersheng San (Two Sages Powder)
Treats sudden cyanosis and blackening of the abdominal skin. Use Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) and Kushen (Sophora Root), each 1 liang, ground into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine for oral administration, and apply topically to the affected area.
Another prescription: Treats sudden cyanosis and blackening of the abdominal skin accompanied by inability to breathe. This formula should be used urgently. Grind Da Qing (Isatis Leaf) into powder, place it in the mouth, and swallow with wine.
Another prescription: Treats sudden cyanosis and blackening of the abdominal skin; without urgent treatment, death will occur within moments. Mix Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) with wine and apply to the affected area; reapply when dry. Additionally, moxa-convolute three zhuang at five locations: four points half an cun around the navel, and one point one cun below Jiutui (CV15).
There are two types of difficulty in breastfeeding for infants. First, upon birth, exogenous wind-heat pathogens invade the umbilicus and flow into the Heart and Spleen meridians, causing the tongue to become thick and coated, lips to become dry and tight, and the mouth to be unable to latch onto the nipple, thus preventing sucking. Second, during birth, if oral secretions and blood are not cleared promptly, they are swallowed into the abdomen, causing distension and fullness in the heart and abdomen, and shortness of breath with rapid respiration, thereby preventing the infant from suckling milk. The following prescriptions are described.
Wufu Huadu Dan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill)
Treats heat in the Heart and Spleen meridians, characterized by a thick-coated tongue, dry and tight lips, and urgency preventing latching.
Sheng Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root, prepared by baking and weighing), Shu Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, prepared by baking and weighing), each 0.5 liang; Tianmendong (Asparagus Tuber, decentered and weighed), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, decentered and weighed), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root, de-rhizomed), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Tianxiao (Saltpeter), each 3 qian; Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), 1.5 qian.
First, grind the initial six herbs into fine powder. Then, incorporate the saltpeter and indigo naturalis, mixing evenly. Bind with refined honey to form pills the size of a corn kernel. Take half or one pill per dose, dissolved in warm water after meals, at any time.
Another prescription: Treats inefficient suckling, feeling of tightness in the throat and tongue, and lack of coordination. Burn ox horn until carbonized but retaining its nature, grind into fine powder, apply to the nipple, allow the infant to suckle, and massage to release juice for swallowing.
Another prescription: Treats chest and abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and rapid respiration, preventing milk intake. Roast eggshell until charred, administer 0.5 qian with wine.
Another prescription: Treats heat-induced stagnation in the chest and heart, and inefficient suckling. Mash fresh Gegen (Kudzu Root), extract juice, and administer orally. If unavailable, decoct dried Gegen and administer; this is also effective.
Treatment for infants unable to breastfeed: Grind four sparrow droppings into powder, apply to the nipple, and let the infant suckle. The infant will consume a significant amount.
Treatment for newborns who do not drink milk and have no urination: Take 2 he of human milk and 1 cun of scallion white (crushed), decoct in a silver vessel to obtain 1 he of liquid. Administer the medicinal liquid orally via injection; immediate effect is expected.
