Lingli Jia Decoction (Turtle Shell and Sea Turtle Carapace Decoction) for treating Mountain Miasma Malaria (a severe form of malaria caused by mountain miasma toxins). In the southern mountain ranges and stream sources, when miasma toxins arise, chills and fever occur at irregular intervals, accompanied by emaciation with yellowish complexion, edema and distension, and numbness and weakness in the four limbs. These are all caused by mountain poisons; this formula treats them all.
Lingli Jia (Carapax Trionycis, ten slices, processed by stir-frying), Ommatoiulus sabulosus bone (Sepiae Endotheca, shell removed), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, processed by stir-frying, each 1 liang), Changshan (Dichroae Radix, 3 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece, processed by frying).
The above five herbs are cut into pieces, soaked in three sheng of wine overnight. Take small amounts slightly before the onset of malaria. Do not discontinue the medication. Apply externally to the body. Isolate from others. Abstain from food and drink until after the paroxysm has passed, then resume contact with people and intake of food. Avoid Amaranthus (Xiancai), raw green onion (Congbai), raw vegetables, and pork.
Changshan Tang (Dichroa Root Decoction) for treating malaria characterized by initial severe chills causing the ground to shake, followed by high fever after the chills subside; applicable to daily or every-other-day paroxysms and for stopping attacks.
Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 1 liang, processed by stir-frying), Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Herba, cut, 3 sheng, washed), Changshan (Dichroae Radix, 3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed by stir-frying, 3 liang), Jiujiu (aged wine, 3 sheng).
The above five herbs are cut into pieces, soaked in wine. Place a knife on top, cover the head, and place in an open area outdoors. On the next morning, add seven sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng, and divide into five doses. Ensure completion before the onset of the attack. Vomiting is expected; if vomiting causes excessive injury, it is not necessary to finish the entire dose. Isolate from others, prohibit food and drink. It is favorable if improvement occurs after vomiting. Avoid Amaranthus (Renxian), Sargassum (Haizao), Chinese cabbage (Songcai), raw green onion (Congbai), and raw vegetables.
Jizi Changshan Wan (Egg and Dichroa Pill) for treating malaria.
Take one egg, break the top, and empty the yolk and white completely into a small pot. Take fine powder of Changshan (Dichroae Radix), measure enough to fill the emptied shell, and pour it into the pot. Measure honey (Fengmi) enough to fill the shell again, and pour it into the pot. Stir the three ingredients together, simmer over low heat without stopping stirring. Stop when slightly cool enough to form pills. Shape into pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wuzi). If the patient's paroxysm occurs at Wu hour (11:00-13:00), administer thirty pills at Ji hour (09:00-11:00). Administer another thirty pills just before the onset. Swallow with juice. Allow vomiting if it occurs, as described previously. If no further paroxysms occur after administration, no further dosage is needed. After taking the medicine, abstain from greasy foods, oily noodles, raw vegetables, and fruits for seven days.
Zhuye Changshan Tang (Lophatherum and Dichroa Decoction) for treating Warm Malaria (Wen Nue). Symptoms include high fever with slight chills, which is characteristic of Warm Malaria. After high fever, if slight chills are felt, or if in Damp-Malaria (Dan Nue) hands and feet become cold at regular intervals, followed shortly by high fever, or if there are hot sensations in hands and feet with dry heaving, or if malaria presents with initial severe chills followed by severe heat, this formula treats all such cases. It is remarkably effective. It is particularly suitable for nursing infants as well.
Changshan (Dichroae Radix, 3 liang, cut), Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Herba, one handful), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus, 1 sheng).
The above three herbs are soaked in five dou of water overnight. On the next morning, decoct to obtain two sheng. Take warm, divided into three doses. Avoid raw green onion (Congbai) and raw vegetables.
