\r脉形图一\p03-b12a1.bmp\r
\r脉形图二\p03-b12a2.bmp\r
\r脉形图三\p03-b12a3.bmp\r
\r脉形图四\p03-b12a4.bmp\r
\r脉形图五\p03-b12a5.bmp\r
\r脉形图六\p03-b12a6.bmp\r
\r脉形图七\p03-b12a7.bmp\r
\r脉形图八\p03-b12a8.bmp\r
\r图\p03-b12a17.bmp\r
\r脉形图一\p03-b12a1.bmp\r
\r脉形图二\p03-b12a2.bmp\r
\r脉形图三\p03-b12a3.bmp\r
\r脉形图四\p03-b12a4.bmp\r
\r脉形图五\p03-b12a5.bmp\r
\r脉形图六\p03-b12a6.bmp\r
\r脉形图七\p03-b12a7.bmp\r
\r脉形图八\p03-b12a8.bmp\r
\r图\p03-b12a17.bmp
The "Essential Secrets of the Pediatric Pulse Classic" from *Xianren Shuijian* states: Children are born relying on fetal essence. After forming their bodies and generating blood and qi, within the three years and one hundred days following birth, their Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi are not yet harmonized. Their bones and tendons are light and soft, and their intestines and stomachs are delicate. Therefore, in their daily movements and stillness, they are easily injured by fright, leading to premature death. How can this not be a cause for concern? In my spare time while writing books, I have paid attention to medical arts and focused on various prescriptions, compiling a work on the origins of pediatric diseases, establishing a school of thought that is straightforward and expedient. I have taken the pulse forms of the Three Passages (San Guan), used analogies to compose songs/rhymes, and explored the pulses related to diseases of the Five Zang organs. I named it *Pediatric Pulse Essential Secrets*. It is left for future generations, serving as a profound guide to dispel confusion.
*Treatise on Pulse Forms*: The second finger of a child's hand has three segments, and the form of the pulse manifests upon them. The position near the Tiger's Mouth (Hukou) is called the Wind Passage (Feng Guan); the next is the Qi Passage (Qi Guan); and the one at the fingertip is the Life Passage (Ming Guan). Whenever there is illness, one should observe the pulse forms on these three passages. By examining the symptoms, one can judge the condition through these three passages. The "finger" mentioned here refers to the left hand.
Pulse Form Diagram (Same as the method of Yang Daye, Imperial Hanlin Physician, with differences noted below.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 1\p03-b12a1.bmp\r
A pulse at the Wind Passage indicates Fright syndrome, transmitting to the Heart.
A pulse at the Qi Passage indicates Gan (Wasting-Thirst/Infantile Malnutrition) syndrome, transmitting to the Lung.
A pulse at the Life Passage, or one that spans all three passages, indicates Lung Wind; Slow Convulsion (Man Jing) is incurable.
Slow Convulsion at the Wind Passage is treatable. (Yang Daye says: Acute Convulsion is also treatable.)
Heart Gan at the Qi Passage is treatable.
Manifestation at the Life Passage is difficult to treat.
Rhyme: Pulse form like fish spines indicates initial fright... (Zhuang Family Tradition and Zhu Family Tradition both state that a pulse form like fish spines indicates initial fright. If the whole body feels hot and the complexion is green, or if there is diarrhea or mania, this judgment applies; eliminating stagnation and regulating Qi will restore clarity.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 2\p03-b12a2.bmp\r
Water Fright at the Wind Passage is treatable.
Gan entering the Lung at the Qi Passage is treatable. (Yang Daye says: Originally considered untreatable.)
The Life Passage and spanning all three passages indicate the signs of Slow Convulsion. If the lower two passages' pulses do not cease, it is difficult to treat; if only a single passage shows the sign, it is treatable.
(Yang Daye says: A Hanging Needle pattern at the Life Passage with Gan is untreatable if it spans the three passages.)
Rhyme: Pulse form resembling a hanging needle indicates frequent diarrhea/dysentery; Water Fright treated urgently brings peace... (Zhuang Family Tradition says: Water Fright with purple-black signs brings peace. The disease originates from the Heart; spanning the three passages indicates a deep/sinking pulse.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 3\p03-b12a3.bmp\r
Wind Passage indicates Lung Fright.
Slow Convulsion with deficiency accumulation at the Qi Passage is treatable.
Gan Qi Wind at the Life Passage is incurable.
Rhyme: Pulse form like the character 'Shui' (Water) indicates Lung Fright; deficiency accumulation transmits causing a green complexion... Phlegm/food above the diaphragm should be removed promptly... (Yang Daye says: Phlegm-fluids above the diaphragm. Eliminating stagnation and clearing Lung Heat brings peace.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 4\p03-b12a4.bmp\r
Lung Wind at the Wind Passage is treatable.
Slow Convulsion Wind entering the Lung at the Qi Passage is difficult to treat.
If present at the Life Passage, it is incurable.
Rhyme: Pulse form like the character 'Yi' indicates disease transmitting to the Liver; eyes slow, convulsions crying with unceasing tears... This disease is transmitted from Lung Wind... (Zhuang Family Tradition says: This is transmitted from Liver and Spleen. Observe the three passages carefully.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 5\p03-b12a5.bmp\r
Disease injuring the Lung at the Wind Passage is treatable.
Intestinal Stagnation at the Qi Passage. Difficult to treat at the Life Passage.
Rhyme: Pulse form like a curved worm indicates deep Gan accumulation; Lung disease with Kidney overacting on the Heart... If the patient can be cured... (Yang Daye says: Urgently eliminate stagnation for the child. A skilled physician deserves a thousand gold pieces.)
\rPulse Form Diagram 6\p03-b12a6.bmp\r
Liver Gan at the Wind Passage is treatable. (Yang Daye says here: Kidney stagnation at the Wind Passage is treatable.)
Lung Gan at the Qi Passage is treatable. (Yang Daye says: Lung stagnation at the Qi Passage is treatable.)
Untreatable at the Life Passage. (Yang Daye agrees.)
Rhyme: Pulse form resembling a ring indicates Kidney Gan; preferring mud and soil as regular meals... Until encountering a good doctor's medicine to eliminate stagnation, one knows the body gradually recovers after taking it.
\rPulse Form Diagram 7\p03-b12a7.bmp\r
Wind Passage (Yang Daye says: If Kidney Gan is present at the Wind Passage.)
Qi Passage (Yang Daye says: Gan roundworms at the Qi Passage.)
If chaotic patterns appear at the Life Passage or span the three passages, it indicates parasites. (Yang Daye says: Untreatable at the Life Passage; if all three passages have curved patterns, it is parasites.)
Rhyme: Chaotic patterns and horizontal phlegm indicate worms in the Heart; sad crying day and night with unbearable pain... Praying to gods and ghosts is useless; do not hesitate to spend money on medicine to bring peace.
\rPulse Form Diagram 8\p03-b12a8.bmp\r
Wind Passage. Qi Passage.
Life Passage (If all three passages show stagnation, or if only the Life Passage shows it, it is untreatable. Patterns on the face and body are called "Flowing Rice" patterns, indicating a death prognosis and untreatable.)
Rhyme: Flowing Pearl death prognosis requires no treatment; further examine the three passages for deduction. If caused by Wind-Qi, it is still treatable; if the Life Passage has this pattern, why doubt death?
*Eight Pulses Governing Diseases Rhyme* from *Xianren Shuijian*:
Pulse form like fish spines: Object fright heals. Pulse form like a hanging needle: Frequent diarrhea/dysentery. Water-character pulse: Severe Lung Fright symptoms. Yi-character pulse: Liver stagnation needs regulation.
Another rhyme: Pulse form like a curved worm: Long-standing Gan affliction. Ring-like pulse: Carefully examine Kidney stagnation. After chaotic patterns, know it is parasite invasion; Flowing Rice pattern throughout the body: Do not hope for peace.
*Correspondence Rhyme of Tiger's Mouth Pulse Colors* from *Xianren Shuijian*:
Tiger's Mouth pulse blue corresponds to the face; water fright comes from heat in the heart... Birds and four-legged animals are judged similarly... (Birds represent Fire, color red. If the Tiger's Mouth pulse is red, it corresponds to redness on the face, indicating fright from birds or four-legged animals. Chaotic pulse must encounter beating trauma.)
Master Mao discusses minor pediatric ailments: When observing the Tiger's Mouth and Three Passages, a cinnabar-red color indicates Cold Damage (Shang Han) and sudden high fever from food; red mixed with blue indicates Fright; purple-blue indicates abdominal disharmony; purple-black indicates cold in the abdomen, possibly with diarrhea or dysentery, located at the Qi Passage. If the Wind Passage has the same colors as above, but tends towards cinnabar-purple, if the illness is severe, black color means death. If the Life Passage has colors extending from the Tiger's Mouth, removing the cinnabar-red allows general treatment; purple and black mean death. (Observing Master Mao, he seems to consider the first passage as the Qi Passage and the second as the Wind Passage, differing in name from others. However, diagnosis is the same; does the difference matter?) Generally, for children's Three Passages, if red reaches the Wind Passage, the illness is severe; if it reaches the Life Passage, it is fatal. First, check the Taichong pulse; if moving, it is auspicious; if not moving, death is certain. Also check Yin and Yang pulses; if sinking and slow, death; if rapid, still treatable.
*Distinguishing Three Passages Brocade Patterns* from *Yingtong Baojian*: On the white flesh of the大鱼际 (Thenar eminence), pulses can be observed: Black rising indicates Epilepsy (Xian); Red indicates Heat; Large Blue indicates Cold; Small Blue indicates Normal. Between the second fingers, pulses can be observed: Blue indicates Four-Legged Animal Fright; Black indicates Water Fright (or bathing fright); Red indicates Human Fright (or Fire Fright). Slight appearance indicates excess Wind; curved patterns indicate Food Injury. Small and short pulses indicate Normal; large and long pulses indicate Severe; emerging beyond the segment indicates Untreatable.
Imperial Hanlin Physician Yang Daye's Method for Observing Pediatric Pulses: If a child's pulse appears red-cherry inside the segment, thick as a fine fish intestine, it indicates excess Wind-Heat. If slightly red, it is Wind-Heat. If slightly red and half-blue, it is Fright Accumulation with Wind-Heat. If blue inside the finger segment, thick as a fish intestine, it is Fright syndrome. If blue inside the segment, shaped like a silk cloth strip (large ends, thin center), it is Acute Convulsion/Epilepsy Wind syndrome. If blue extends past the segment by three or two fen, wriggling like a bent eel, it is Slow Convulsion Wind syndrome. If the front is blue, middle is half-blue half-red, it is Acute Fright syndrome. If white inside the segment, thin as a fish intestine, it is Spleen Injury with Diarrhea. If white inside the segment, half-white half-red/cherry, it is Cold Damage syndrome. If Yin/Yang pulse breath extends past the segment by two or three fen, shrinking and expanding like a bent eel, it is Cold Damage; if provoked by medication, it is Innocent Disease (Wugu Ji), a fatal prognosis. White color extending past the segment by two or three fen indicates Spleen Diarrhea. If Cold Damage pulse breath is at the center of the segment, it is Innocent Disease, chronic. After seven, nine, or eleven days, if originally Cold Damage, it can be cured in one, three, or five months. If white, blue-red inside the segment, thin as a fish intestine, it indicates Spleen/Stomach disharmony. White pulse inside the segment indicates Convulsion Wind. Generally, yellow pulse in children is fatal; pulse extending beyond the segment is a death sign.
Yang Daye's Decree on Life and Death of the Three Passages: Blue patterns on the hand indicate Four-Legged Animal Fright; Black indicates Water Blows; Red indicates Adult Fright; Internal hidden connected to Wind is urgent; Curved patterns seek Food; Look at the crossed-hand area to verify the true form.
Inner Eight Pieces of Brocade: Blue small/large/curved: Water/Fire/Birds/Beasts blows; Black flower small/large/curved: Humans/Ghosts/Four-Legged Animals; Red small/large/curved: Rice/Noodles/Fish/Meat; If red threads appear, Slow Spleen Convulsion acts as poison.
Another Decree: Blue pattern at Tiger's Mouth often indicates Four-Legged Animal Fright; Red indicates Water and Blows; Black indicates External Person Fright; Deep pulse indicates old milk sickness; Curved pattern seeks Food; Even with high fever, cold ears and emerging acne indicate specific conditions.
Outer Eight Pieces of Brocade: One month after birth, distinguish source by Left for Male, Right for Female. Purple pattern indicates Fetal Fright Qi; Blue indicates incomplete fetal Qi; Red indicates Fright due to Water. Examine both sides for ages one to three.
Another Decree: If it passes one passage growing one rice-grain length, two rice-grains indicate Fright/Blow onset. Transmitting to the first middle segment indicates simultaneous Fright/Blow. Hiding/revealing faint patterns indicate transmission to Spleen knot. Purple indicates difficult treatment; Blue/Purple Fright entering Spleen orifice is called Slow Spleen Wind; skilled doctors must treat urgently. If Red, relax; medication is miraculous. Pulse out Three Passages connecting to finger surface indicates child's death prognosis. Regardless of color (Red/White/Cinnabar), in ten deaths one life, do not complain.
*Feixian Lun* Finger Segment Observation for Children: Observe finger segments from Tiger's Mouth 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Pulse appearing blue/purple, red/light, or black with brocade-like straight patterns indicates Milk Injury to Spleen and Heat Fright onset. Both hands having patterns indicates simultaneous Fright and Accumulation. Three lines: Scattered indicates Lung generating Wind-Phlegm (with wheezing). Blue indicates Cold Damage with cough. Large Red indicates Diarrhea; Black combined indicates Dysentery (More Red = Red Dysentery; More Black = White Dysentery); Purple combined with thirst indicates Deficiency.
Rhyme: Left hand Three Passages showing Brocade Patterns definitely indicates Spleen/Stomach injury, Heat, and Fright. Right same as Left, double patterns rise; Food Accumulation and Fright Injury are the original form. Pattern head looking like a trident indicates Lung Wind-Heat Phlegm making sounds at night. Blue indicates Cold Damage; Only Red indicates Diarrhea arising.
*Bao Tong Fang* Observing Child's Tiger's Mouth: From Tiger's Mouth 1st to 2nd segment pulse, blue/yellow/black with straight brocade-like patterns indicates Milk/Food Injury to Spleen and Fright onset. Both hands are the same. Simultaneous Fright and Accumulation has three types: Line-shaped indicates Lung generating Wind-Phlegm (or wheezing sound). Blue indicates Wind-Cold Cough. Red indicates Diarrhea; Red/Black combined indicates Dysentery (More Black = Red Dysentery); Purple combined indicates Diarrhea, this sign indicates Deficiency.
Rhyme: Patterns arising in Left Hand Brocade Shape definitely indicate Spleen Injury and Heat Fright. Right has double patterns like Left; Dysentery Injury, Fright, and Diarrhea arise together. Pattern head like a trident indicates Lung Wind-Heat generation, crying incessantly. Blue indicates Cold Damage; Only thorough Red indicates Diarrhea arising.
Touching the shin of a child at improper times: If meeting Heart King on the 7th day, death is certain (Heart King rules Zi/Wu hours).
Tiger's Mouth Pattern Forms:
Pattern like fish spine bone \rFig\p03-b12a9.bmp is due to Fright.
Rhyme: Pattern like fish spine is initial Fright; Red indicates disease in Heart; If Black, connects to Kidney pulse; Further investigate the root cause.
Pattern like Water character \rFig\p03-b12a10.bmp is Combined Fright Cold Damage.
Rhyme: Black pattern Fright transmits to Kidney sac; Blue/Yellow Spleen suffers disaster; Combined Fright Cold Damage is Red/Cherry; Calm Heart and Release Exterior must be balanced.
Pattern like One character \rFig\p03-b12a11.bmp is Eating plus Fright with Accumulation signs.
Rhyme: Curved pattern Food has abnormalities; Wind Evil transmits into Spleen; If Black, stop treatment; Know great life is perilous.
Pattern like Ring/Loop \rFig\p03-b12a12.bmp is Fright Phlegm-Fluid entering Lung.
Rhyme: Few know Convulsion Wind entering Lung; Carefully deduce among Eight Brocade Patterns; Ring pattern with pale face, phlegm sound tidal resonance requires urgent treatment.
Pattern like Curved Worm \rFig\p03-b12a13.bmp is Fright entering Liver.
Rhyme: Curved Worm pattern is disease transmitting to Liver; Obvious external signs look carefully; Talisman/Medicine applied simultaneously, why worry this ailment cannot be healed?
Pattern like Fish Hook \rFig\p03-b12a14.bmp is Convulsion Wind above Diaphragm.
Rhyme: Convulsion Wind above Diaphragm enters Lung; Patient suffers Heat then generates Wind; Cool Muscle, Resolve Diaphragm, Open Stomach; Then calm Heart Mind, disease clears.
Pattern like Hanging Needle \rFig\p03-b12a15.bmp has Fright in Heart.
Rhyme: Fright transmits to Heart, Accumulation is many; High fever throughout, Qi disharmonious; This ailment is called Tian... disease; If treatment is slow, helpless.
Pattern like Chaotic Character \rFig\p03-b12a16.bmp is Spleen generating Gan Worms.
Rhyme: Worms chaotic everywhere in Spleen; Frequent diarrhea/dysentery and worse crying; Also sinews/skin dry/curling/shrinking; Careful conditioning without delay.
Pattern like Flowing Pearl... is Death Prognosis, bitter Wind-Qi, cannot use downward-purging medicine.
Rhyme: Suddenly seeing Flowing Pearl in Three Passages, child bids farewell, life is hard to save; Doctor seeking soul-returning miracle medicine, even if meeting Bian Que, would be idle.
*Bao Tong Fang* Discourse on Three Passages Brocade Patterns Rhyme:
Child born just passed one month, how to speak of illness? Left for Male, Right for Female at Tiger's Mouth. If Purple pattern, it is Fright-Heat. Blue indicates fetal Qi incomplete, also originating from Fright generating convulsions with phlegm. Red definitely lasts several days, or Fright Water/Fire diseases connect. Child one to two [months], Tiger's Mouth more open palm grasp. If Rice Grain emerges passing Initial Passage, all have Fright, prevent eye closing. If passing one segment to two segments, same as Accumulation/Fright speech. Hiding/revealing faint patterns, this number should transmit to Spleen Knot. If Purple, truly difficult to treat; Blue/Purple Fright enters Spleen Orifice. Now called Slow Spleen Wind, good doctors treat urgently. If Red, relax; Medication time is miraculous. Pulse out Three Passages connecting to finger surface, child's death prognosis still seen. Regardless of color Red/White/Cinnabar, ten deaths one life, do not resent.
*Bao Sheng Lun* Three Passages Brocade Patterns: Before age three, if ill, must observe Tiger's Mouth pulse. Next finger outer segment is Life Passage, then Qi Passage, then Wind Passage. Ancients said initially getting Wind Passage disease, still can transmit to Qi, Life definitely difficult to state.
Straight pulse indicates Fright (Treat Fright). Curved inward indicates Cold Damage (Release Sweat). Curved outward indicates Food Injury with Accumulation (Downward Accumulation).
Children under 576 days old must observe Brocade Patterns:
Life Passage (Three pulses passing: Death.)
Qi Passage (Two pulses seen: Illness deepens.)
Wind Passage (One pulse seen: Initial illness.)
1. Wind Passage easy to treat.
2. Qi Passage illness deep.
3. Life Passage death prognosis.
\rFig\p03-b12a17.bmp
Differentiate on the three segments of the second finger.
Rhyme: Blue pattern rises on finger, know Four-Legged Animal Fright (Blue governs Pig/Dog/Sheep/Horse Fright). Black again due to Water Blow (Wind/Rain/Shaman spray bath Fright). Red is Human Fright (And grabbing/touching).
Curved inward Cold Damage severe; Curved forward Food steams up; Purple patterns mostly Diarrhea/Dysentery (And Heat). Yellow governs Thunder Fright (Drum sound same). But look at the crossed-hand area, then manifest true illness form.
*Zhuang Family Tradition* Child Observation Outer Eight Pieces of Brocade says: Rapid breathing Wind also urgent, curved pattern Food stopped.
Also Child Three Passages Signs: Three Passages Blue is Four-Legged Animal Fright; Three Passages Red is Water Fright; Three Passages Black is Human Fright. Having this spanning Three Passages pulse sign is extreme Fright sign, must die. Others outside can be treated.
Pulse curved inward \rFig\p03-b12a18.bmp is Qi Gan.
Pulse curved outward \rFig\p03-b12a19.bmp is Wind Gan.
Pulse slanted right \rFig\p03-b12a20.bmp is Cold Damage body heat no appetite.
Pulse slanted left \rFig\p03-b12a21.bmp is Cold Damage body heat no appetite.
Double Hook Pulse \rFig\p03-b12a22.bmp is Cold Damage.
Pulse three curves like long worm \rFig\p03-b12a23.bmp is Injury from hard objects.
Pulse two curves like hook \rFig\p03-b12a24.bmp is Injury from Cold.
Pulse one end like (With feet) \rFig\p03-b12a25.bmp is Injury from Cold.
Spots on face \rFig\p03-b12a26.bmp all are recurrence signs.
Head/Face/Belly (Large pulse and Green Veins \rFig\p03-b12a27.bmp ) all are Food Poison (Fright/Accumulation difficult to treat.)
Pulse like chaotic worm \rFig\p03-b12a28.bmp is Common Gan, also Worm Gan.
Roundworm/Food/Accumulation Gan, treating will surely heal. Any pulse insufficient/fine, all are Wind-Qi, only eliminate Gan, then remove worms, fattening child is effective.
Also Three Passages Brocade Patterns say: Wind Passage top Black pattern governs Epilepsy; Red pattern governs Heat; Tight small Blue pattern slight Cold Evil; Large Blue pattern governs Cold Evil. Qi Passage pattern manifestation is Gan sign, transmitting Lung Red/Blue, Purple governs Gan Accumulation. Life Passage pulse manifestation governs Acute/Slow Convulsion Wind, difficult to treat. Three Passages pulse spanning: Death.
\rFig\p03-b12a29.bmp Wind Passage Blue like fish spine easy to treat, is initial Fright sign, Black difficult to treat. Qi Passage Blue like fish spine governs Gan Consumption, body heat, easy to treat. Life Passage Blue like fish spine governs Deficiency, Wind Evil transmits to Spleen, difficult to treat.
\rFig\p03-b12a30.bmp Wind Passage Blue/Black like Hanging Needle, Blue governs Water Fright. Qi Passage Red like Hanging Needle governs Gan combined with Lung Organ Accumulation Heat. Life Passage having this, all five colors are death signs. Three Passages spanning like Hanging Needle governs Slow Convulsion Wind, difficult to treat.
