[Innocent Gan] Divided into five categories
(Also known as Innocent Disease, with Innocent Dysentery attached)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Source of All Pathologies) on the syndrome of innocent disease in children: When a child has a yellow complexion, straight hair, frequent high fever, food failing to nourish muscles and flesh, and dies after a long period, it is called "Innocent". This refers to a bird in the sky named "Innocent", which hides by day and roams by night. It washes children's clothes and mats; if left exposed overnight, this bird flies over, deposits its feathers on the clothes for the child to wear, or on the mat for the child to sleep on, thereby causing the child to contract this disease.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Holy Benefit Universal Prescriptions) on innocent disease in children: A lump like a pellet appears behind the head, movable under the skin when pressed. Whenever a child has such a mass, similar to the *Jin Chong* (Jin worm) under the tongue of birds and beasts, if not removed quickly, it will endanger life. Initially, the lump is soft and painless, containing worms resembling rice flour. Upon heating, it gradually enlarges; once large, the sinews knot and fixate, after which the worms scatter with the flow of Qi and Blood, lodging somewhere; mother and offspring multiply, eroding the Zang-Fu organs, and muscles ulcerate. Alternatively, there may be dysenteric discharge of pus and blood, causing the child to gradually become yellow and emaciated, with dry, erect hair, thin and weak limbs, leading to premature death from then on.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang*: The so-called innocent dysentery in children presents with a distended abdomen, dysenteric diarrhea with pus and blood, and withered hair and skin. The body becomes increasingly emaciated and weak; since the intestines and stomach are deficient, and the dysentery occurs without regularity, it is thus named Innocent Gan Dysentery.
Mr. Wang Dong of Handong, *Bao Jia* (Family Treasure): Regarding innocent disease in children, ancient texts say there is a bird in the sky named Innocent. Because children's clothes were sun-dried and forgotten overnight, encountering this bird passing by and urinating on them, causing the child to cry. The gradual yellowing and emaciation caused by other diseases is not this condition. This is actually caused by injury from the Eight Evils. The Eight Evils are: hunger, fullness, labor/overwork, wind, fright, summerheat, and accumulation, termed the Eight Evils. Over time, it causes gradual yellowing and emaciation, failure to gain muscle from eating, frequent crying at night, occasional slight high fever on the body, excessive thirst, eating without knowing satiety, or development of sores and tinea.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Baby and Child Precious Mirror): The disease of innocence in children manifests as masses in the abdomen, carbuncles on the body, emaciation, scorched and falling hair, abdominal distension with wheezing, cold dysentery with rectal prolapse, vomiting upon eating. This is Innocent Disease. Clarifying these pathological bases is correct. According to *Yuan Zhong Ji*, there is a female bird without a male, also named Gu Hu, or Xing Gui (Star Ghost). This bird likes to fly at night into human courtyards; seeing infants' clothes exposed to dew, it immediately stands on them, leaving feathers, causing the infant to suffer from Innocent Disease. If not buried after death, the soul transforms into the offspring of this bird. The common saying of "Tian Gou" (Heavenly Dog) does not refer to the Heavenly Dog personified, but rather points to the harm caused by this bird. Hence it is called Xing Gui (Star Ghost).
*Wan Quan Fang* (Ten Thousand Complete Prescriptions) on the discussion of innocent disease in children: The symptoms of innocent Gan in children include a yellow face, straight hair, frequent high fever, lack of moisture in the body, exposed skull bones, heat in the brain and abdominal distension; craving meat paste, drinking water excessively, thereby forming dysentery. The dysentery resembles rice water, with a cold back and hot abdomen, along with the formation of accumulations and lumps behind the head.
*Yu Han Guan* (Jade Key Pass) on the discussion of Innocence:
Since the fourth year of Yonghui, a bird came from the Western Regions, spreading throughout the seas. Its shape resembles an owl-eagle or a bat; no one knows what it is, nor can anyone identify it. It hides in stone caves by day and emerges at night, shaking flea-infested wings, leaving toxic insects as fine as hair tips on clothes, which enter the pores of the skin and flesh, causing irregular chills and fever, with illness patterns resembling Gan. If infants in swaddling clothes are not careful with their clothing, whether washed or bathed, and hung out on eaves at night, they will contract this disease from insect toxins. Since the cause stems from the "Innocent" bird, it is called Innocent Disease. For all bathed clothing, wash with orchid soup and dry with gentle fire, and there will be no harm forever. There are also cases of irregular chills and fever, irregular milk and food intake, transmitting into Gan disease, resembling Innocence: yellow face, sparse hair, withered and emaciated body, bloody and foul-smelling teeth, sores on head and nose, alternating chills and fever, night sweats, eating dirt; disharmony of Zang-Fu, resembling stagnation or dysentery, worms in stool, urine like rice water. The occurrence of various Gans is never without cold accumulation stagnation and retained heat. Among the eight syndromes of cold, warmth, hunger, fullness, joy, anger, deficiency, and excess; within the five Zang organs of Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney, the principle of "five eights" originates here. If not cured for a long time, limbs become thin like bamboo tubes, turtle chest and saw-like spine, prominent blue veins, dry flesh and exposed bones, thin neck with protruding throat, irregular panting, intermittent warm tidal fevers, unceasing cold sensations, clear saliva in mouth, decreasing milk and food intake, gradually forming the signs of Gan Lao (Gan consumption) and severe emaciation. *Han Guan* discusses separately Jie Lu (fontanelle bulging) and He Xi (crane knee), Liu Fu Ting Feng (Wind Stagnation in Six Fu Organs), Bu Lu Ding Xi (Drooling Ding Xi), and Wu Zang Shi Xue (Blood Loss in Five Zang Organs), stating these are contracted in utero. Or seeing the body appear with purple light, yellow eyes with dilated pupils, panting with heart sinking, fullness and stabbing pain in hypochondriac regions, shortness of breath, purple sores on skin. Black and rotten gum roots, tongue like a white plum, dry hiccups and rebellious Qi, direct expulsion of milk and food, sallow complexion, lips like dry bones, scorched and black ears—all are ominous signs, untreatable. For any such syndromes, distinguish severity and origin of disease, and regulate with medication.
*Zhu Shi Jia Chuan* (Zhu Family Transmission) Song of Eight Pieces of Cotton for Innocent Disease:
The Qi of Innocent disease in children often arises from the mother's actions. If people guard carefully, how could one see emaciation? Fright and thinness lead to Wind disorders; warmth and cold cause Qi flaccidity. Must remove diseased breast milk, do not put on heavy clothes again. Do not let eating happen too early; speaking late is not feared. In theory, there are eight prohibitions; strength rises frequently in the chest. Scalp is smooth and shiny, hair is thin and sparse. Liver congestion invades both eyes; Spleen yellow enters four limbs. Whole body generates nettle rashes;遍体 is covered in sores. Diarrhea and dysentery cease not; aversion to cold lacks regularity. Embroidered balls are completely ignored; how can one ride a bamboo horse? White halos appear in pupils; clear saliva drips from corners of mouth. Fighting teeth must bite nails; raising hands to wipe eyebrows. Nightly eating melons and fruits; morning eating soil and mud. Stomach injured, intestines and belly distended; Lung excessive, why doubt panting! Eating and drinking cease not; indulgent sleeping like drunken confusion.

Liu Huang (Sulfur) [also known as Shi Heng Zhi, Jin Ye. Take 3-5 liang to 10 liang. Imported yellow sulfur is best; others acceptable if pure. Crush, fill jar 80-90%, no problem]
Take a cinnabar-firing jar, put medicine inside. Cover lid. Gather a large handful of Gou Ti Cao (Dog Hoof Grass, originally Shi Long Rui) and Shui Jian Cao (Water Mirror Grass, grows in rice fields, one stem four flowers like field character, also called Shui Tian Cao, single stem). Pound these two herbs in iron mortar until mushy, add a handful of yellow earth, pound until uniform like mud (if lacking these two herbs, Yi Mu Cao [Motherwort] can substitute). Wrap the bottom and sides of the cinnabar jar with this mud mixture, thickness 5-6 fen, stopping at the rim. Place on flat ground, surround with 5-6 jin of charcoal, place 1+ jin of熟火 (prepared fire) on top to burn. Wait until the jar is 90% red-hot, watch specifically for green flames rising from the rim, immediately brush away charcoal fire, cover quickly with 3 dou of wood ash, preventing gas/flame escape. Wait until cool, remove ash, scrape off mud (this is one firing cycle, repeat according to this method). Second firing: pound herbs again, wrap firmly, fire five times as before. If firing conditions are right, it smells like cooked egg yolk, indicating readiness. If urgent, two firings suffice (more firings are better). Once firings complete, bury furnace in clean ground overnight (to remove fire toxicity, scraping sand/gravel below is excellent). Take out furnace, boil in pot for 10-20 boils, break furnace, pound medicine, grind in mortar with water until smooth mud, dry. For every 1 liang of medicine, use 1+ liang of steamed dough, soak, squeeze out water, mix with medicine, pound in tea mortar until uniform like flour, form pills the size of tung seeds, sun-dry. For children, keep fine powder, mix with rice drink, administer with cup. For night crying, fright, milk injury with phlegm-saliva, quickly grind 1+ fen of medicine to administer, twice daily, naturally effective, expelling accumulated matter. Give generously, no contraindications. If three-to-five-year-olds have innocent diarrhea/dysentery, take this.
