According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding the syndrome of trunk crying in infants: When a child is in the womb, if the mother's care is impaired by wind-cold, pathogenic qi enters the uterus and damages the fetus's zang-fu organs. Therefore, after birth, the pathogenic qi remains in the abdomen; when the pathogenic qi moves and contends with the healthy qi, it causes abdominal pain. Consequently, the infant extends and contracts the body, breathes rapidly, and cries.
The song from *Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children) on trunk crying in infants:
Infants contract wind-cold in the womb,
Crying and calling out, unable to find peace after birth.
Abdominal pain, body extension, often accompanied by rapid breathing;
A skilled physician must carefully observe and seek the cause.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats trunk crying caused by fetal cold, accompanied by abdominal pain, black coating on the tongue, and flow of green saliva. Use Dang Gui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Pill), also known as Hei Wan (Black Pill).
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Ye Lang Du (Radix Stellerae Chamaejasme) (each 9 zhu), Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Evodiae), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (one version uses Xing Ren), Shu Jiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), Xi Xin (Herba Asari), Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) (prepared), Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (prepared, skin and umbilicus removed, each 18 zhu), Chi Shao (not specified, likely Fermented Soybean paste or similar contextually, here translated as Dou Chi/Fermented Soybean), Dou Chi (Semen Sojae Preparatum) (7 he), Ba Dou (Semen Crotonis) (skin and membrane removed, 10 seeds).
Crush seven of the nine ingredients, sieve them, weigh the powder to ensure sufficient quantity. Grind Ba Dou and Dou Chi into a paste. Gradually add the powder and pound until thoroughly mixed. Wrap in mulberry leaves and steam under five sheng of rice. Remove and pound one thousand times. For a one-month-old infant, administer one pill the size of a millet seed twice day and night. If ineffective, slightly increase the dose until the desired effect is achieved. This formula also treats water retention (Shui Pi).
*Qian Jin Fang* Ma Chi Fan Wan (Purslane Alum Pill): Treats fetal cold causing trunk crying, convulsions, abdominal distension, poor appetite, green-yellow stools, as well as deficiency-cold in adults, internal cold, or excess conditions where vomiting is contraindicated.
Ingredient: Ma Chi Fan (Alumen) (1 jin), roasted for half a day, mixed with jujube paste. Adults take two pills the size of a wutong seed three times daily. Reduce dosage for children according to need, stopping when warmth is felt in the abdomen. It is excellent for expelling excess pathogens.
*Qian Jin Fang* treats sudden abdominal pain with body twisting and sweating in infants, named "Fetal Cold Formula".
Boil concentrated juice of pear leaves (Li Ye) to 7 he, drink in three to four doses.

Pound Fu Zi and Zhen Zhu and sieve. Pound Ba Dou and Xing Ren separately into a paste. Add Fu Zi and Niu Huang and pound 1,200 times. If too dry, add a little honey to form pills. For a hundred-day-old infant, administer one pill the size of a millet seed. For a three-year-old, one pill the size of a hemp seed. For five- to six-year-olds, one pill the size of a broad bean. Take twice daily after feeding. The medicine should cause slight movement above and below the diaphragm. If the medicine is fully expelled, the disease is cured; if dispersed, take again.

Burn pig manure, pour boiling water over it to extract the juice. Check the temperature and bathe the infant. Also give a small amount orally.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Take a piece of fresh horse manure, squeeze out the juice, and administer orally.

Pound the ingredients, sieve to powder, bind with refined honey and pound 300-500 times. Store in a container. For infants under 100 days, administer one pill the size of a hemp seed with warm water. For 1-2 year olds, administer two pills. Adjust dosage based on size, stopping when diarrhea occurs.
*Sheng Hui Fang* treats fetal cold abdominal pain starting from 50 days post-birth, with slight fever and fright, pooling saliva, playing with the tongue, trunk crying, and upward gaze. This is a sign of epilepsy (Xian). Use this formula.
Ingredients: Zhu Shen (Renis Porci) (1 pair, thinly sliced, fat membrane removed), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 liang, cut, lightly roasted).
Coarsely crush Dang Gui alone, mix with Zhu Shen. Decoct in 1 sheng of clear wine until reduced to 7 he. Strain. Administer an amount the size of an apricot kernel for the infant to swallow, three times daily and once at night. Adjust dosage based on size for best results.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Yi Zhong Bai Yu (Lepisma saccharina) (14 pieces).

For a 100-day-old, two small beans. The medicine warms the middle and is non-toxic. If Huang Qi is unavailable, it may be omitted. Administer from birth to prevent cold qi from arising; it prevents vomiting. Take for one year then stop for optimal results. If cold pain is unbearable, decoct in water and drink, similar to using Li Zhong Wan. The tonifying effect is dozens of times greater, with no hardship in regulation.
*Ying Ru Shu* treats young infants crying, restless at night with fear, abdominal wind-pain resembling stroke, occurring at specific times, worse at night, as if haunted.

Make into powder, mix with milk to the size of a large soybean. Take three times daily and once at night.
Zhang Huan: During gestation, if the mother's care is improper, or if she excessively consumes cold foods and drinks, cold qi enters the infant's abdomen and stomach, weakening fetal qi. This leads to weakness, frequent illness, and excessive crying upon birth, named "Trunk Crying". Use Yang Zang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction).
Ingredients: Chuan Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 liang), Chen Xiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum), Ding Xiang (Flos Caryophylli), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong) (each 0.5 liang).
