To treat phlegm and qi obstruction, take one cup of chicken egg juice (Jizi), one-quarter cup of fresh ginger juice (Shengjiang Zhi), half a cup of honey (Fengmi), and one tael of fine peppermint powder (Bohe Ximo). Mix evenly, place in a vessel, and simmer in hot water for about one hour. Administer freely with food; it reduces phlegm as swiftly as a galloping horse.
Huatan Wan (Phlegm-Resolving Pill): Burn loofah (Sigua) until carbonized but retaining its nature, grind into fine powder, and bind with jujube pulp (Zaorou) to form pills the size of a marble. Take one pill per dose, dissolving it with ginger decoction (Jiangtang). It resolves phlegm most rapidly and also stops coughing.
Zhuitan Wan (Phlegm-Sinking Pill): Treats all types of wind-phlegm, damp-phlegm, old-phlegm, and phlegm-fire, as well as chest stuffiness/fullness and qi obstruction.
Black morning glory seed (Hei Qianniu, *Semen Convolvuli*) four taels, stir-fried, taking only the finest powder (one tael); large soap pod (Da Zaojiao, *Gleditsiae Fructus*) peeled of skin, strings, and seeds, fried with lard until yellow (four qian); raw alum (Sheng Baifan, *Alumen*) three qian.
Grind all into fine powder, bind with rice paste to form pills. Take one qian per dose, two qian for slightly older children, taken on an empty stomach with ginger decoction. Phlegm and saliva will be discharged via the stool; for chronic patients, take once every five or ten days; for mild cases, take once every half month.
To treat wheezing caused by vinegar inhalation, take two taels of licorice root (Gancao, *Radix Glycyrrhizae*), remove the reddish skin, cut each segment into two-cun lengths, split them in half, and soak in the juice of two pig gallbladders (Zhudan) for three days. Remove, dry over fire, grind into powder, and form pills the size of mung beans with honey. Take two qian every night before bed, washed down with tea water; miraculous effect!
For persistent asthma regardless of age, one dose stops it immediately; it also treats infantile asthma (Naixiao). Shih Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gualou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) each 1.5 qian; Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) each 1 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root) 0.7 qian; five slices of fresh ginger (Shengjiang). Decoct in water and take hot.
Qingjin Dan (Clear Golden Pill): Treats all wheezing disorders, whether due to phlegm or food stagnation, especially effective when triggered by rich flavors.
Steamed radish seed (Luobozi/Laifuzi, *Semen Raphani*), dried and ground into powder; pig tooth soap pod (Zhuyazao, *Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus*) burned until carbonized, in equal proportions.
Grind together into fine powder, bind with ginger juice and wheat flour paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 10–20 pills per dose, washed down with ginger decoction.
The disease of Gan (Infantile Malnutrition) is also a severe condition in children. Before the age of sixteen, this disease is called Gan; after sixteen, it is called Lao (Consumption/Deficiency Syndrome). Both result from weakness of true yuan (vital energy) and deficiency of qi and blood. Investigating the source of the disease, it invariably stems from the Spleen and Stomach, for the Stomach is the sea of water and grain. The essence of water and grain becomes Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), and the vigorous qi becomes Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). When Ying and Wei are abundant, they irrigate the zang-fu organs. Those whose body hair/skin is full and pores are dense possess strong Qi; those whose skin is moistened and complexion beautiful possess strong Blood. Therefore, those with ample water and grain have no disease; those with reduced water and grain become ill; when water and grain are exhausted, death occurs. In Gan disease, if the physique is not robust, it indicates Qi deficiency; if the complexion is not lustrous, it indicates Blood weakness. Qi deficiency and Blood weakness imply that the Spleen and Stomach must be damaged. Some cases arise from improper breastfeeding or early solid food intake in infancy, damaging true qi due to immature intestines and stomach; some from excessive consumption of sweet and fatty foods, leading to long-term stagnation, yellow face, and emaciation; some from abnormal milk due to the mother’s imbalance of cold/heat or emotional/sexual excess during lactation; some from indiscriminate eating of grains, meats, fruits, and vegetables after age two or three, causing stagnation in the middle jiao, which turns into accumulation and then into Gan; others result from overly aggressive removal of accumulation, damaging stomach qi, or from reduced intake after severe illness, vomiting, diarrhea, malaria, or dysentery, leading to malnourishment of the Spleen and Stomach. Although the causes differ, all ultimately归结 to deficiency. Symptoms include shiny/tight scalp, scorched/scanty hair, retracted cheeks/dry nose, craving mouth/pale lips, dim/ulcerated eyes, rubbing eyebrows/nose, hunched spine/yellowish body, grinding teeth/biting nails, scorching thirst/spontaneous sweating, white urine/sour feces, abdominal distension/bowel sounds, masses with tidal fever, and intense cravings for fruits, salted charcoal, or cement. These are all signs. However, treating cold with warmth and heat with coolness is the standard method. One must not realize that Gan disease is caused by deficiency; even heat is deficiency-heat, even cold is deficiency-cold, and even accumulation is deficiency-accumulation. Thus, treating accumulation should not involve sudden attack; treating cold should not involve harsh warming; treating heat should not involve excessive cooling. Although accumulation is the mother of Gan, treating Gan requires removing accumulation first. However, if one attacks rapidly in extremely deficient patients, the accumulation may remain while Gan becomes critical. Therefore, in robust patients, remove accumulation first, then support Stomach qi; in weak patients, support Stomach qi first, then eliminate accumulation. The text states: "Robust people have no accumulation; only the deficient do." This shows that deficiency is the root of accumulation, and accumulation is merely the branch manifestation of deficiency.
If there is aversion to food, slippery diarrhea where milk/food passes directly through, black/rotten gums, soft/head-nodding, cold limbs, dysentery with swelling, pale face like silver, hard abdomen like stone, blue-black muscles, flaccid anus like a tube, vomiting black blood, vomiting/diarrhea with roundworms—these are all incurable.
For early-stage disease, Jisheng Wan (Accumulation-Saint Pill) is the main formula; for chronic disease, use Fei'er Wan (Child-Nourishing Pill) for regulation, using tonification to achieve elimination.
For initial onset of Gan, Jisheng Wan is the primary formula. If there are concurrent symptoms of the five zang organs, adjust flexibly without seeking too many other methods.
