In the first month, Tian De (Heavenly Virtue) is at Ding; in the second month, at Kun; in the third month, at Ren; in the fourth month, at Xin; in the fifth month, at Qian; in the sixth month, at Jia; in the seventh month, at Gui; in the eighth month, at Gen; in the ninth month, at Bing; in the tenth month, at Yi; in the eleventh month, at Xun; and in the twelfth month, at Geng. The directions for Tian De are based on this diagram. The directions for Yue Kong are at Bing and Ren for odd months, and at Jia and Geng for even months. If the direction of Tian Bei (Heavenly Preparation) is inconvenient, find the positions of Bing, Ren, Jia, or Geng according to the diagram and use them; if the direction of Yue Kong is inconvenient, also find the position of Tian De according to the diagram and use it.
When a newborn is one month old and has their lanugo shaved, it should be done in a warm, suitable room. Rubbing the head with a mixture of Apricot Kernel (Xingren), Hemp Seed Oil (Mahu You), Mint (Bohe), and Calamine (Nifen) can prevent all conditions related to fetal toxins, such as sores and boils.
[Note] Shaving the infant's lanugo at one month of age must be done in a warm, enclosed room because the child's Qi and Blood are not yet full, making them susceptible to cold wind invasion. After shaving, grind three Apricot Kernels (Xingren, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) finely, add three leaves of Mint (Bohe, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), grind them together again, add three to four drops of Hemp Seed Oil (Mahu You, Cannabis Fructus Oleum), mix well with Calamine (Nifen, Calamina), and apply to the head to ward off wind pathogens and prevent the occurrence of sores, boils, heat-toxin syndromes, etc.
If a newborn cannot cry upon birth, it is colloquially called "Cao Mi" (Grass Confusion). This is often due to difficult labor during delivery or exposure to severe cold. When Qi closure prevents sound from emerging, breathing becomes faint and life is in imminent danger. For Qi closure, whip the back with green onion; for cold constriction, urgently apply the umbilical moxibustion method.
[Note] Upon birth, an infant should cry immediately, establishing their form and life. Those who do not cry are colloquially said to have "Cao Mi." This is often caused by difficult labor, resulting in Qi closure after birth, hence the lack of crying. Urgently whip the back with green onion to unblock the Qi, which will induce crying. Sometimes, during severe cold weather, the infant's Qi is constrained by cold, preventing crying. In such cases, the Umbilical Moxibustion Method (Xun Qi Dai Fa) should be used urgently to restore vitality, allowing Qi to flow and the cry to emerge. If there is no breath or sound, with cyanotic complexion and black nails, although the form exists, life is already unstable; how can survival be expected!
Whipping Back Method
For infants born with blocked Qi, faint breathing, and little crying, gently strike the back with green onion. Within moments, the cry will emerge, restoring life.
[Note] Green Onion (Cong Bai, Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) is pungent and promotes Qi circulation; striking awakens the spirit. Using green onion to whip the back signifies opening Qi and awakening through stimulation. If green onion is unavailable, gentle manual striking is also acceptable.
Umbilical Moxibustion Method
For newborns exposed to cold, with Qi closure, silence, and difficulty crying, use oil-soaked paper twists to moxa the navel without cutting the cord. Warm Qi entering the abdomen ensures natural patency and peace.
[Note] Immediately after leaving the womb, if the environment is cold, the infant's Qi may be closed by cold, preventing crying. Urgently wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them close. Do not cut the umbilical cord. Dip a paper twist in oil, ignite it, and pass it back and forth under the umbilical cord to moxa. Let the fire's warmth enter the abdomen via the navel, dispersing the cold and warming the Qi, so that the cry emerges naturally!
