Initially, due to heat in the Zang-Fu organs causing thirst and desire for water or fluids, diarrhea and dysentery ensued. Over time, Qi and Blood became deficient, failing to ascend and nourish the brain marrow; thus, the fontanelle becomes sunken like a pit and cannot fill flat.
Roasted dog skull (Canis familiaris cranium) is calcined into powder, mixed with egg white, and applied topically.
Fontanelle bulging refers to the swelling of the anterior fontanelle. The Spleen governs muscles. Irregular feeding, excessive hunger or fullness, or invasion by cold or heat pathogens affecting the Spleen cause disharmony of the Zang-Fu organs. Pathogenic Qi ascends, causing the fontanelle to bulge high like stacked objects. The child exhibits sparse, short, yellow hair and spontaneous sweating. If cold Qi ascends, the fontanelle feels hard; if hot Qi ascends, it feels soft. Cold patterns are treated with warming methods, and heat patterns with cooling methods, dosing according to severity. Concurrently, regulate Qi. In children with profuse sweating caused by the interaction of wind and heat, the condition is similar and difficult to resolve quickly.
When a child is old but the cranial sutures remain open and do not close, it is called "Jie Lu" (Splitting Skull). The Kidney governs bone marrow, and the brain is the Sea of Marrow. Deficiency of Kidney Qi leads to insufficient brain marrow, resulting in open cranial sutures that fail to close. Cases with deficient brain marrow are like trees without roots; within a thousand days, they will never fully heal and inevitably become disabled. Treat with Qian Yi's Di Huang Wan:
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang, washed and dried, 4 qian), Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shan Zhu Yu), Dried Yam (Shan Yao, 2 qian each), Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie, 1 qian), Moutan Bark (Mu Dan Pi), Poria (Fu Ling, 1 qian each).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 1-2 pills per dose, administered on an empty stomach with warm cooked water. Additionally, use Greater Arisaema Tuber (Da Nan Xing, slightly roasted), ground into powder, mixed with rice vinegar, applied on red silk fabric warmed by heat, and adhered to the affected area.
Another prescription:
Asarum from Huayin (Xi Xin, remove seedlings and soil), Cinnamon Twig (La Gui, remove rough bark), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, raw).
Equal parts of these ingredients are ground into powder and mixed with milk for topical application.
Childhood drooling (Zhi Yi) refers to saliva flowing out and soaking the cheeks. Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen. Due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, saliva flows freely without control. The treatment principle is to warm the Spleen.
Pinellia Tuber (Ban Xia), Costus Root (Mu Xiang, 0.5 liang each), Raw Sichuan White Ginger (Chuan Bai Jiang), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu), Green Tangerine Peel (Qing Pi), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi, 2.5 qian each).
Grind into fine powder, bind with steamed cake paste to make pills the size of hemp seeds. One-year-olds take 10 pills; two-year-olds take 20 pills, administered via gavage with rice soup.
Speech is the voice of the Heart. During gestation, if the mother suffers sudden fright, pathogenic factors invade the Heart. Consequently, the fetus is affected by the maternal Qi, leading to unsettled Heart Spirit and stiff tongue obstruction, resulting in inability to speak at age four or five. This pattern is primarily treated with Chang Pu Wan:
Chang Pu Wan Composition: Ginseng Root (Ren Shen), Acorus Rhizome (Shi Chang Pu), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Men Dong, remove heart), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Polygala Tuber (Yuan Zhi, processed with ginger juice and stir-fried), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui, 2 qian each), Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, each separately ground).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, administered with rice gruel drink.
