巢氏论滞颐之病，是小儿多涎唾流出，渍于颐下。此由脾冷液多故也，脾之液
为涎，脾气冷不能收制其津液，故冷涎流出，滞渍于颐也。
按∶《内经》云舌纵涎下，皆属于热。而此专属脾冷，亦一偏之见。张涣处冷
热各二方，为得之，然以流出为冷，不流出为热，恐亦未确。
〔张涣〕温脾丹 治脾冷病。
丁香 木香（各一两） 半夏（一两，用生姜六两同捣细，炒令黄） 青橘皮 白术 干姜（微炒。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，炼蜜和，如黍米大。每服十粒，米饮下，量儿大小加减。
温胃散 治脾冷流涎。
丁香（一两） 肉豆蔻 半夏（白矾水浸，炒黄） 白术 干姜 甘草 人参（去芦头。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，每服一钱，水八分，入生姜二片，煎五分，去滓温服，食前。
金朱丹 治脾热多涎。
金箔（二十片，研） 朱砂（细研，水飞） 半夏（汤浸七遍，取末） 天南星（牛胆制，取末。各一两） 白茯
苓（取末） 石膏（细研，水飞。各半两）
上件都拌匀，再细研，用生姜自然汁和如黍米大。每服十粒，煎人参汤下，乳后。
牛蒡丹
牛蒡子（一两） 郁金 川朴硝 枳壳（麸炒，去穣） 皂子（炒黄。各半两）
上件捣，罗为细末，用生姜汁打白面糊和如黍米大。每服十粒，煎人参汤吞下，量儿大小加减。
《千金》治小儿口中涎出方
以白羊屎纳口中。
又方
以东行牛口中沫，涂口中及颐上。
又方
桑白汁涂之，瘥。
巢元方论述滞颐这一病症，是指小儿口中多涎唾流出，浸渍在下巴下方。这是由于脾脏虚寒、津液过多所致。脾的体液为涎，脾气虚冷不能固摄控制其津液，因此寒冷的涎液流出，停滞浸渍于下巴处。
按语：《黄帝内经》中说舌体纵缓流涎，都属于热证。而此处专门归属于脾脏虚寒，也是一种片面的见解。张涣针对冷证和热证各设立两个方剂，算是比较得当，然而认为流出的是冷证、不流出的是热证，恐怕也不够准确。

丁香（一两） 肉豆蔻、半夏（用白矾水浸泡，炒黄）、白术、干姜、甘草、人参（去芦头。各半两）
以上药材捣碎，过筛成细末。每次服用一钱，用水八分，加入生姜两片，煎煮至五分，滤去药渣，温热服用，饭前服。
金朱丹 治疗脾热导致的多涎。
金箔（二十片，研细） 朱砂（细研，水飞法处理） 半夏（热水浸泡七遍，取粉末） 天南星（牛胆制，取粉末。各一两） 白茯苓（取粉末）、石膏（细研，水飞法处理。各半两）
以上药材混合均匀，再次细研，用生姜自然汁调和，制成如黍米大小的丸药。每次服用十粒，煎煮的人参汤送下，乳饭后服用。
牛蒡丹

将白羊屎放入口中。

用向东生长的牛口中的唾液沫，涂抹在口中及下巴上。
又一方
用桑白皮汁涂抹患处，即可痊愈。
Chao Yuanfang discussed the disease of "Zhi Yi" (drooling), which refers to excessive saliva flowing from a child's mouth and soaking the area below the chin. This is caused by cold spleen and excessive fluid. The fluid of the Spleen is Xián (saliva); when Spleen Qi is cold, it cannot control its fluids, causing cold saliva to flow out and stagnate/soak in the chin area.
Commentary: The *Huangdi Neijing* states that tongue deviation with drooling all belongs to Heat. To attribute this solely to Spleen Cold is also a one-sided view. Zhang Huan provided two formulas for Cold and two for Heat, which is appropriate; however, assuming that flowing saliva indicates Cold and non-flowing indicates Heat is likely inaccurate.
[Zhang Huan] Wēn Pí Dān (Warming Spleen Pill) treats Spleen Cold disease.
Dīngxiāng (Caryophylli Flos, Clove), Mùxiāng (Aucklandiae Radix, Costus Root) (each 1 liang). Bànxià (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (1 liang, pounded finely with 6 liang of Shēngjiāng [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger], fried until yellow). Qīng Júpí (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, Green Tangerine Peel), Báizhú (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gānjiāng (Zingiberis Rhizoma, Dried Ginger) (lightly fried. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, with rice water, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
Wēn Wèi Sǎn (Warming Stomach Powder) treats drooling due to Spleen Cold.
Dīngxiāng (Caryophylli Flos, Clove) (1 liang). Ròudòukòu (Myristicae Semen, Nutmeg), Bànxià (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in Báifán [Alumen, Alum] water, fried yellow), Báizhú (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gānjiāng (Zingiberis Rhizoma, Dried Ginger), Gāncǎo (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice Root), Rénshēn (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root) (remove lú tóu [rhizome head]. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder. Take 1 qián per dose, with 8 fen of water, add 2 slices of Shēngjiāng [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger], decoct until 5 fen remains, remove dregs, and take warm before meals.
Jīn Zhū Dān (Gold Cinnabar Pill) treats excessive saliva due to Spleen Heat.
Jīnbó (Folium Aurum, Gold Leaf) (20 pieces, ground finely). Zhūshā (Cinnabaris, Cinnabar) (ground finely, processed by water floating). Bànxià (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in boiling water seven times, take powder). Tiānnánxīng (Arisaematis Rhizoma, Arisaema Rhizome) (processed with Niúdǎn [Bovis Gallus, Bovine Gallbladder], take powder. each 1 liang). Báifúlíng (Poria, Poria Cocos) (take powder), Shígāo (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum) (ground finely, processed by water floating. each 0.5 liang).
Mix the above ingredients thoroughly, grind again finely, use natural juice of Shēngjiāng [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger] to bind into pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, with decoction of Rénshēn [Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root], after milk feeding.
Niúbàng Dān (Arctii Pill)
Niúbàngzǐ (Arctii Fructus, Arctium Fruit) (1 liang). Yùjīn (Curcumae Radix, Turmeric Root), Chuān Pòxiāo (Natrii Sulfas, Sodium Sulfate), Zhīqiào (Aurantii Fructus, Bitter Orange) (bran-fried, remove pith), Zàozǐ (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina, Chinese Honeylocust Thorn) (fried yellow. each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients, sieve into fine powder, use Shēngjiāng [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger] juice to make white wheat flour paste and bind into pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, swallow with decoction of Rénshēn [Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Root], adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.

Place Bái Yángshǐ (Caprae Hircus Excrement, Goat Dung) in the mouth.
Another formula:
Apply the foam/saliva from an ox walking eastward to the mouth and chin.
Another formula:
Apply juice from Sāngbáipí (Mori Cortex, Mulberry Bark) to the area; it will heal.
