[Mao] First, use Qingjin Dan (Piyi) to purge the Gan accumulation. Subsequently, regulate with Yunqi San (for refusal of milk/food), Xianglian San, and Ruxiang San (for diarrhea). Once the diarrhea stops, administer Changfu Baotong Wan (for all types of Gan syndrome). The *Shibi Jing* states: Gan diarrhea arises from careless diet or improper feeding practices. There are sheet-like masses in the abdomen, or masses the size of an egg, or two to three fingers wide, which cause diarrhea. The stool is like dregs, hair is stiff, complexion lacks luster, appearing greenish-yellow, and eyes often gaze askance. One must separate water and grain; only mild medicines that harmonize Qi can bring recovery. If hot medicines are used, swelling will occur leading to death. [Lou] Diarrhea accompanied by excessive eating indicates Chong Gan (Worm Gan); insecticidal medicines are appropriate. Diarrhea accompanied by poor appetite indicates Leng Gan (Cold Gan); warm medicines are appropriate.

Grind into powder. Dosage: 1 zi for young children, half qian for over 3 years, 1 qian for 5-6 years. Mix with Perilla and Papaya, take with rice drink, before milk/food meals, 3 times daily. My family child suffered diarrhea for over 100 days, reduced to skin and bones, unresponsive to myriad methods. Official Zhongli Jun advised taking Wupo San, promising immediate cure. I obtained the formula and administered 2-3 doses, resulting in efficacy. Another grandson also had severe Gan diarrhea; two doses stabilized him. For deep-seated illness, cure occurs within 1-2 days. This medicine is highly effective for Gan diarrhea. Its nature is mildly warm; it may not suit acute hot diarrhea.
Danxi treated a 14-year-old son of a wealthy family. Yellow face, voracious appetite, easily hungry, required meat to feel full. Diarrhea for one month. Pulse was large in both hands. Surprisingly not emaciated or fatigued. Initially suspected damp-heat causing Spleen stagnation and poor appetite, but the patient was robust and ate much, without thirst. I deduced it was likely Gan worms causing dysentery. Examined stool: confirmed Ascaris lumbricoides. While away, a pediatrician advised using anthelmintics and forbidding purgatives for accumulation, promising to check upon return to stop diarrhea. The plan was not followed. Next spring/summer, diarrhea recurred, no abdominal pain but dry mouth. I said: "This is due to treating worms last year but not Gan." Prescribed clearing Gan heat medicines, taken with strong White Atractylodes Decoction. Diarrhea stopped in 3 days. Half a month later, visited his home, saw the son was very thin. Advised: White Atractylodes as Sovereign, Paeonia as Minister, plus Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Huanglian, Huhuanglian, and a little Aloe, formed into pills. Take with White Atractylodes Decoction. Stopped in half a month. Forbidden meat consumption; self-healing expected in 3 years.
*Doumen Jing* Formula for pediatric Gan diarrhea.
Grind Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) into extremely fine powder like flour. Take half qian mixed with gruel. Cures immediately. Alternatively, mix with equal parts Jingxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong) for better effect.
*Zhuang Shi Family Collection* Formula for chronic Gan diarrhea not healing.
Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Lvfan (Melanterite), Duanshi (Burnt Lime) (each 2 liang); Liuhuang (Sulfur, half liang).
Grind evenly. Put in jar, burn until flame turns green. Remove from fire, cool, and grind again. Take 1 zi or half qian. Mix with cooled millet gruel. Take before meals.
Another Formula:
Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus, roasted), Wubeizi (Galae Chinensis), Meishi Zi (Terminalia Chebula Resin) (equal parts).
Grind into powder. Take half qian with aged rice drink.
