Chao Yuanfang stated that when pathogenic factors contend with healthy qi, tinnitus occurs; if prolonged, the pathogenic factors stagnate, leading to deafness.
Changwu San (Acorus and Aconite Powder): Treats pediatric ear ringing that persists day and night.
Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (stir-fried, 4 fen each).
Grind the above into powder. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear, twice daily.
Qianjin Yi Fang (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) formula for treating ear pain:
Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (processed, skin removed), Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii).
Take equal parts of these two herbs, wrap them, and insert into the ear.
For relevant syndrome treatments, refer to the section on "Ulcers of the Heart Region."
Chao Yuanfang stated that the ears are the gathering point of the Zong Mai (Grand Vessels) and the pathway through which Kidney Qi communicates. In children, if the Kidney essence is abundant but accompanied by heat, the heat rises to the ears. The body fluids become congested and coagulate, producing pus. Alternatively, water may enter the ears during bathing and not be completely drained out. This retained moisture stagnates, contends with blood and qi, and generates heat, also causing pus discharge. These conditions are collectively referred to as "Er" (Ear Disease/Purulent Otitis); if not cured for a long time, they may develop into deafness.
[Zhang Huan] Honglanhua San (Safflower Powder): Treats chronic ear disease that fails to heal.
Honglanhua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii) (washed, dried by baking), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) (scraped, 1 liang each), Wuyu Gu (Os Sepiae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis) (0.5 liang each). Grind the above into fine powder for insufflation.
Xionghuang (Realgar) (ground with water into fine paste, 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Moschus) (1 fen, finely ground).
Grind all ingredients together until uniform and fine. Wrap the medicine in cotton and insert into the ear, changing twice daily.
[Tian Shi] Hongyu San (Red Jade Powder): Treats pediatric purulent otitis.
Kubai Fan (Alumen Exsiccatum), Gan Yanzhi (Dry Carmine), Shexiang (Moschus) (1 qian each).
Grind uniformly. First, clean the ear canal with a cotton-wrapped stick, then apply the powder.
[Tang Shi] Longhuang San (Dragon Yellow Powder): Treats pediatric stagnant ear with continuous pus discharge.
Kubai Fan (Alumen Exsiccatum), Longgu (Os Draconis et Mastodi) powder, Huangdan (Minium) (stir-fried, 0.5 liang each), Shexiang (Moschus) (1 qian).
Grind finely. First, wipe away pus and fluid with a cotton swab. Insufflate approximately one zi half fen of powder into both ears, twice daily.
[Dan Bo Yuanjian] For stagnant ear, apply Sulfur powder externally, once per day and night, which is effective.
Mi Yao (Secret Essentials) recommends insufflating Quchan (Gryllus) ash powder for immediate effect; for cases with ulcers, apply it topically. (Sun Simiao's prescription is the same.)
Xue Ji stated: All external treatment formulas can only treat mild Fu-organ syndromes. If the condition belongs to Liver channel wind-fire or blood dryness, one must internally administer appropriate medicines according to previous discussions, while using external methods to absorb pus and dampness. This is acceptable. However, relying solely on external attack while neglecting internal treatment is erroneous.
