When the fetus is in the womb, if the mother suffers from frequent fright or palpitations, or consumes foods with heat-toxic properties, within ten days after birth, the infant often presents with deficiency-phlegm, rapid breathing with chest fullness, closed eyes with red sclerae, swollen eyelids, lethargy with frequent yawning, muttering sounds, generalized high fever, dark red urine, constipation, and occasional惊烦 (frightened irritability). This is due to heat accumulation in the womb or the mistaken administration of warm-tonifying agents, causing heat to stagnate internally and steaming the fetal qi, thus producing these symptoms. If left untreated for a long time, conditions such as鹅口 (thrush), 重舌 (double tongue), 木舌 (wooden tongue), and 赤紫丹瘤 (red-purple carbuncles) will arise. One should first administer Mutong San (Wood Vitis Decoction) to the mother to be taken orally, allowing the medicinal effect to enter through breast milk, thereby unblocking Heart qi and resolving烦热 (irritating heat). Subsequently, wash both eyes with Sisheng San (Four Sages Powder) mixed with warm water. Once the eyes open, administer Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment), Tianzhu Huang San (Calamus Powder), Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction), and Danggui San (Angelica Decoction), also having the mother take these medicines. For any fetal disease, one must not seek rapid results; instead, one should first have the wet nurse take medicine so that its effects pass into the milk, gradually resolving the condition. This approach is almost foolproof. If cold-natured drugs are used directly to attack the pathogen, other diseases will inevitably arise. The wet nurse must still avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and wheat products, so that recovery is easier and relapse is prevented.
Shengdi Huang Tang (Raw Rehmannia Decoction) [from Tang Shi]: Treats infants who, while in the womb, were affected by maternal heat or excessive consumption of wine and wheat products containing heat-toxins. The heat transmitted to the fetus causes the newborn to present with a red face, closed eyes, body high fever, incessant crying, and an oral cavity hot like boiling water, which are signs of fetal heat.
Herbs: Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Gua Lou Gen (Radix Trichosanthis).
All ingredients in equal proportions, crushed. Take half liang per dose, add one zhan of water, decoct until six-tenths remains. The postpartum woman may also take this, applying a small amount to the infant's mouth.
Mutong San (Akebia Decoction): Mainly treats upper jiao heat in infants, urinary obstruction, and various sores and erysipelas. Taken by both mother and child.
Herbs: Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae), Di Fu Zi (Fructus Kochiae), Ku Xing (Herba Siegesbeckiae) (each half liang), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Chi Fu Ling (Poria cum Rubro) (each three qian), Qu Mai (Herba Dianthi), Hua Shi (Talcum), Shan Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae), Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) (each two and a half qian).
Add one zhong of water, three stems of Deng Xin Cao (Medulla Junci), or add Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and decoct together.
Niang Ru Fa (Method of Nourishing Milk):
Herbs: Zhu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Chi Fu Ling (Poria cum Rubro) (peeled), Tian Hua Fen (Radix Trichosanthis), Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Sheng Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae), Shan Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae) (shelled).
Crush into powder. Decoct in water. After meals, the wet nurse should express and discard retained milk, then take this medicine.
Gan Dou Tang (Licorice and Black Soybean Decoction): Treats infantile fetal heat.
Herbs: Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (one qian), Hei Dou (Semen Sojae Nigrum) (two qian), Dan Zhu Ye (Folium Bambusae) (seven leaves).
Crush. Add one zhong of water, seven stems of Deng Xin Cao, decoct, and take at any time.
Sisheng San (Four Sages Powder): Mainly treats infants suffering from fetal heat-toxin, resulting in inability to open eyes after birth.
Herbs: Deng Xin Cao (Medulla Junci), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Qin Pi (Cortex Fraxini), Mu Zei (Equiseti Ramulus), Zao Zi (Fructus Jujubae) (each half liang).
Decoct in one zhong of water, clarify and remove dregs. Wash the eyes whenever possible; the eyes will naturally open. Afterwards, take Dihuang Gao.
Dihuang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment): Treats fetal heat.
Herbs: Shan Zhi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Lv Dou Fen (Farmen Phaseoli Mungonis), Fen Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata cum Melle) (six qian).
Grind into powder. Mash one and a half liang of fresh Sheng Di Huang thoroughly, mix with one and a half liang of good honey. Store in a thin clay vessel and boil in a copper pot until it becomes an ointment resembling thin paste. After cooling, mix in the aforementioned powders and grind again in a mortar. Form pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qian Shi). Take half a pill each time, dissolved in Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
