The *Qianjin Fang* records three conditions: umbilical wind (Umbilical Wind), umbilical dampness (Umbilical Dampness), and umbilical sores (Umbilical Sores). All three arise from exposure to wind-damp pathogenic factors after the umbilical cord is cut. When wind pathogen enters the navel, it causes swelling of the navel and abdominal distension, limited mobility of the four limbs, excessive crying, and inability to suckle milk; in severe cases, convulsions occur, which is termed Umbilical Wind. If the swelling and dampness persist without drying for a long time, it is called Umbilical Dampness. When wind and dampness interact, causing sores on the navel that fail to heal for a long time, it is called Umbilical Sores. If one condition remains unresolved, the pathogen may enter the meridians and collaterals, often transforming into epilepsy (Epilepsy). Once epilepsy is established, it should be treated according to protocols for epilepsy.
Umbilical Wind refers to the condition where, after cutting the umbilical cord, the infant is invaded by water-dampness, wind, and cold pathogens. The wind-damp qi enters the navel and flows into the Heart and Spleen, leading to abdominal distension, navel swelling, heavy body sensation, stiffness and straightening of the limbs, ceaseless crying day and night, inability to suckle, and in severe cases, wind-induced convulsions. If the area around the navel turns cyanotic or black, and the mouth puckers shut unable to open, this indicates internal convulsion (Internal Convulsion), which is incurable. If the fingernails turn black, death ensues immediately. If heat resides in the chest and diaphragm, with labored breathing and straining, it also causes navel swelling; in such cases, Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) from the *Qianjin Fang* is indicated (formula see previous section). Qian Yi stated: If an infant's navel is not dried thoroughly after bathing, wind pathogen enters and causes sores, leading to puckering of the mouth. Severe cases indicate Spleen deficiency and Stomach Qi disharmony; regulating Qi with Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder) is appropriate (formula see Spleen section). The *Leicui* states: One should first use Kongtan Yin (Phlegm-Controlling Drink) to induce vomiting of wind-phlegm, then use Yipi San (Splee-Benefiting Powder) to harmonize the Spleen, and finally use Chensha Gao (Cinnabar Paste) to calm fright, resulting in recovery. If the hands and feet are curled and clenched, or the jaw is locked shut, it is incurable. Zeng's method involves first administering Jiefeng Gao (Wind-Expelling Paste), followed by Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) combined with Kuanqi Yin (Qi-Widening Drink), decocted with ginger juice, scallion white, and Juncus effusus (Rush Pith) in water for oral administration to resolve wind-phlegm. Additionally, apply Yizijin (One-Character Gold) mixed with Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction) or Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction) to the oral mucosa; mild cases recover quickly. For infants with robust constitution presenting fever, phlegm, and convulsive seizures, administer Heibai Yin (Black-and-White Drink) dissolved in warm honey water on an empty stomach; slight diarrhea yielding two or three stools of tea-brown color follows, after which Baishaoyao Tang (White Peony Decoction) decocted with water, ginger, and jujube is given. This method is commonly used and effective. If the navel protrudes, the abdomen is tight, slightly cyanotic, and the mouth is puckered shut, this indicates excess Liver Wind suppressing Spleen Earth; treatment is contraindicated. Any case presenting these signs is virtually untreatable; even if survival occurs, longevity is unlikely.
Kongtan San (Phlegm-Controlling Powder)

Jiefeng Gao (Wind-Expelling Paste) Treats acute and chronic convulsions, umbilical wind with puckered mouth, locked jaw, copious salivation/phlegm, and sore throat/swollen throat.
Clematis (Weilingxian, de-rhizomed, 1.5 liang, finely chopped, roasted, ground to powder).
Take 3 liang of Sophora Flavescens bark (Zaojiao), remove skin and strings, crush, soak in one bowl of warm water, filter through silk cloth, and slowly boil into a thin paste. Add 0.5 liang of pure vinegar, boil for three to five times, remove from heat, and cool. Mix evenly with the Clematis powder in a mortar, form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Qianshi). First, rub salt-plum meat on the gums. Then, take one or two pills of this paste, mix thickly with warm plain water, and smear into the left and right jaw joints to unlock them immediately, then proceed with other medications. Use earthenware vessels for boiling, silver vessels are best. To resolve copious wind-phlegm, dissolve in light ginger soup and swallow occasionally. For sore throat, take with warm tea liquor or Mint decoction.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
Kuanqi Yin (Qi-Widening Drink) (Both treat fright disorders).
Yizijin (One-Character Gold) Treats newborns beyond one week of age developing umbilical wind with puckered mouth, or sudden acute/chronic convulsions with locked jaw and upward rushing phlegm.

Cut, roast, and grind into powder. Administer 1 yi-zhi to 0.5 qian dose, mixed with ginger juice and boiling water, and smeared into the jaw joints with a finger. For sudden acute/chronic convulsions with locked jaw, rub upper and lower gums with salt-plum soup.
Heibai Yin (Black-and-White Drink) Treats excess-type umbilical wind qi and acute convulsions with high fever.
Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqianniu, half raw half roasted), White Morning Glory Seed (Baiqinniu, half raw half roasted), Rhubarb (Dahuang, raw use), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, de-white), Areca Nut (Binglang) (each 0.5 liang), Licorice (Gancao, roasted, 3 qian), Mirabilite (Xuanmingfen, 2 qian).
Except for Areca Nut which is not overheated, dry or roast the remaining five herbs. Combine with Areca Nut, grind to powder, and mix with Mirabilite in a mortar until uniform. Administer 0.5 qian to 1 qian dose, dissolved in warm honey water, taken on an empty stomach or as needed. Freshly prepared medicine is most effective; efficacy delays if stored long.
Baishaoyao Tang (White Peony Decoction) (Formula see Hernia section).
Zhang Huan's Fengqi San (Sealing Navel Powder) Treats newborns whose mothers were careless during bathing, allowing water into the navel, or urine in swaddling clothes damaging the navel with dampness, or exposure to wind-cold after undressing, causing navel swelling, excessive crying, and inability to suckle, named Umbilical Wind disease. Use urgently.
High-quality Sichuan Angelica (Hao Chuandanggui, 0.5 liang, washed, roasted dry), Tianjiangzi (Sky Droplet Seeds, 3 pieces, lightly roasted), Tangled Hair (Luankou, 1 qian, burned to ash retaining nature).
Pound together, sieve into fine powder, mix with 1 yi-zhi of Musk. Apply 1 yi-zhi to 0.5 qian to the navel, use frequently.
The *Sanyin Fang* notes: Infants suddenly developing umbilical wind with puckered mouth within seven days of birth have no effective treatments, leaving one to watch them die, which is pitiable. There is a little-known method: examine the infant's gum for millet-sized blisters. Dip a熟 cloth in warm water, wrap around finger, and gently wipe the blister until broken; the mouth opens immediately and the infant calms down, achieving miraculous results without medication.
For newborn umbilical wind with puckered mouth unresponsive to drugs: Moxibustion at Ran Gu (RN2), located in the depression anterior to the medial malleolus below the prominent bone. Moxa cone: 3 moxibustions. Acupuncture depth: 3 fen. Avoid bleeding. Immediate effect. For umbilical wind with eyes rolling upward, puncture Sizhukong (SJ23). For navel swelling, moxa at the vertebral segment opposite the navel, 3 moxibustions, cone size like wheat grain.
Umbilical wind with puckered mouth in infants under 100 days old is mostly incurable.
