Chao Yuanfang stated: People gather various snakes and insects, place them in vessels, and let them devour each other. The one remaining is named "Gu" (a venomous insect created by mutual cannibalism). It can transform its form and may enter the abdomen through food or drink, consuming the five zang organs. Children who contract Gu exhibit symptoms identical to adults, including stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, restlessness, and oppression. Acute cases result in immediate death; chronic cases progress over years, leading to gradual emaciation and debility until the heart is consumed, bloody stools are passed, and the heart rots, causing death. Upon death, the disease transmits to others, hence termed "Gu Zhu" (infectious Gu disease).
