According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) in the chapter "Pediatric Gu Poison Dysentery Syndrome": When seasonal cold and heat are disordered, and toxic epidemic qi prevails, children may be injured by it due to inadequate clothing. The pathogenic factor contends with blood and qi, entering the intestines and stomach. Toxic heat accumulates; if the large intestine is deficient, bloody dysentery ensues. The appearance of this dysentery features blood clots resembling slices of chicken or duck liver passing with the stool. This occurs because the toxic heat is excessively strong, damaging the internal organs, and the presentation resembles gu poisoning; thus, it is termed "Gu Poison Dysentery."
The song from *Shi Bi Jing* (Classic of Stone Walls) regarding Spleen Toxic Dysentery states: "Toxic heat in the spleen is called Pure Yang [indicating intense heat], originally caused by physicians' misuse of hot-natured medicines, leading to dryness and obstruction in the large intestine, with frequent drops of blood in the withered intestines. The abdomen feels like wind-blocked closure, making it hard to open the eyes; the body is hot while the head is warm but the feet turn cold; a red tongue and protruding chest indicate this syndrome. Frequent crying, panting, urgency, and even mania occur. Treatment must first clear heat and open the stomach; this is the good prescription of a wise physician." This condition results from heat accumulation in the spleen; if untreated, latent toxins remain. Treatment should cool the spleen first, then eliminate accumulation. If the bones above the chest suddenly protrude accompanied by panting and urgency, it is incurable.
The song in *Feng Sui Jing* (Classic of Phoenix Marrow) is identical, with notes stating: It is suitable to use Jinhua San (for excess-heat syndromes) and Xianglian Wan (which is Ji's Xianglian Wan mentioned in previous sections).
The song on Wind-Toxic Dysentery in *Xing Zheng Lun* (Treatise on Symptoms and Signs) reads: "Among the eight types of dysentery, wind-dysentery is the most difficult to treat. The form resembles various shades of green grass juice. Toxic wind mixed with bean-soup-like stool adds to the evil heat. With stomach failure, full slices of chicken-liver-like blood appear. For red dysentery, do not rush to purge accumulation first; for closed eyelids and refusal to eat, the condition is critical and hard to bear. If it turns to white dysentery, purging should be delayed slightly; frequent warming of the zang-fu organs retrieves the root source."
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats lower bleeding resembling chicken liver, with unbearable abdominal cramping pain, named Gu Poison Dysentery formula:
