The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides a formula for treating jaw dislocation and inability to close the mouth caused by yawning:
One person uses their fingers to pull the patient's chin, gradually pushing it back into place until it reduces. The finger should be withdrawn quickly after pushing to avoid accidental biting of the finger.
Another formula:
Apply melted wax mixed with water to the affected area.
Yet another formula: For treating trismus (lockjaw), facial deviation pulling the tongue so that it cannot move:
Calcined Oyster Shell (*Concha Ostreae*), Long Earth from the Hearth (*Fulonggan*), Processed Aconite Root (*Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata*), Calcined Alum (*Alumen*).
Grind the above four herbs into equal parts into a fine powder. Mix with white wine to form a paste, apply to the affected area, replace when dry, and continue until cured.
Moxibustion method from *Qianjin Fang*:
For jaw dislocation caused by yawning, moxa the fifth thoracic vertebra on the back, fourteen moxa cones per session, twice daily. If not cured after three days, moxa the Qichong (Stomach 30) point two hundred times. This point is located in the middle of the bone below the throat on the chest, also known as "Qitang".
Also moxa the depression three cun above the medial malleolus of the foot, or three cun and five fen, one hundred moxa cones per location, administered in three sessions. This point is Sanyinjiao (Spleen 6).
[Zhang Huan] Various diseases of the ears in children are caused by wind pathogen entering the brain and stagnating in the Hand-Taiyang meridian, leading to deafness. When wind and dampness interact, sores may appear in both ears. Furthermore, when children are slightly older and see the new moon, pointing at it with their finger can cause sores under the ear, named "Moon Erosion Sores" (Yueshi Chuang). Additionally, if bathwater accidentally enters the child's ear while the wet nurse is bathing them, the retained water and dampness interact with blood and qi, accumulating and forming pus, referred to as "Er Gan" (Ear Fungus/Parasite disease).
[Xue Ji] The ears are the orifices of the Heart and Kidney, and belong to the meridians of the Liver and Gallbladder. The Heart and Kidney govern internal conditions of essence and blood deficiency; the Liver and Gallbladder govern external conditions of excess wind-heat. Deafness or tinnitus indicates congenital deficiency. Pain, swelling, or purulent itching indicate pathogenic invasion. For congenital deficiency, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) should be used to tonify the Kidney. For Liver meridian wind-heat, Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder) is appropriate. If caused by blood dryness, Zhizi Qinggan San (Gardenia Liver-Clearing Powder) should be used; if ineffective, supplement with Liuwei Dihuang Wan, and intermittently administer Jiuwei Lushui Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Pill) for infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome). If due to Liver-Kidney Gan heat, take Liuwei Dihuang Wan in the morning and Lushui Wan in the evening. If due to food stagnation generating internal heat, Siwei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Fat-Nourishing Pill) is used. If caused by accumulated heat from the wet nurse's rich diet, Jiawei Qingwei San (Modified Stomach-Clearing Powder) is indicated. If due to Spleen meridian constraint, Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) is used. If due to Liver fire anger, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder) is used. These medications should be taken by the wet nurse, who should also give small amounts to the infant. Do not focus solely on treating external symptoms, as this will only block the ear orifice and induce other syndromes. Prolonged neglect leads to lifelong deafness; proceed with caution.
The song from *Baojian* states: Taiyang pathogen entering the ear damages hearing; frequent Qi stagnation often causes deafness. Tinnitus is linked to wind and Qi interaction. Pain corresponds to evil wind at Naohu. Kidney heat steaming causes ear disorders; deepening illness brings pain and thick pus. Without thick pus, it is not this disorder; it arises simply from water droplets entering the ear.
