Qianjin Su Mi Gao (Thousand Gold Butter and Honey Ointment): Treats deficiency-cold of Lung Qi. It is used for injuries caused by Leprosy (Lifeng), resulting in hoarseness and obstruction of voice, coughing with expectoration, rebellious Qi causing wheezing, and cold stagnation transforming into heat pathogens, leading to aphonia (inability to speak).
Prescription: Su You (Butter Oil), Ya Mi (Wild Honey), Yi Tang (Maltose) each one sheng; Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice), Sheng Bai Bu Zhi (Fresh Stemona Juice), Zao Rou (Date Flesh), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) each half a sheng (to be ground); Gan Pi (Tangerine Peel) five pieces (to be powdered).
The above eight ingredients: First, boil Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) with three sheng of water until the volume is reduced by half. Strain out the dregs, then add Su You (Butter Oil), Mi (Honey), Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), Yi Tang (Maltose), etc. Simmer over low fire again until two sheng of liquid remains. Take one cun bi (a square inch measure) mixed with warm wine, swallow slowly. Take three times daily. After seven days, the color of phlegm will change; after fourteen days, saliva will become thin; after twenty-one days, coughing will cease.
Mu Fang (Wood Formula variant): Remove Bai Bu (Stemona), Gan Pi (Tangerine Peel), and Yi Tang (Maltose). Add Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith) and Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) each two liang; Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) each one liang; Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) each half a liang. This formula is named Tong Sheng Gao (Voice-Opening Ointment).
When the Lung orifice is attacked by Wind-Cold, it leads to wheezing, coughing, and rebellious Qi, causing hoarseness and voice obstruction. Therefore, Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Gan Pi (Tangerine Peel), and Bai Bu (Stemona) are used to warm and disperse the stagnation in the Lung collaterals. Jiao (Animal Glue), Yi Tang (Maltose), Zao Rou (Date Flesh), Ru Su (Butter Oil), and Ya Mi (Wild Honey) are boiled into an ointment and taken with wine to promote the circulation of Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) in the Spleen and Lung. When Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) return and dryness is moistened, the voice naturally recovers.
In this formula, Bai Bu (Stemona) and Gan Pi (Tangerine Peel) are removed to prevent depletion of Zheng Qi (Upright Qi); Jiao (Animal Glue) and Yi Tang (Maltose) are removed to prevent aiding stagnation. Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) are added to nourish Lung Jin-Ye (Body Fluids); Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) and Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) are added to clear Lung dryness; Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) are added to search out pathogens in the Lung; Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith) and Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) are added to benefit the Lung orifices. The original prescription's Su You (Butter Oil), Mi (Honey), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), and Zao Rou (Date Flesh) are retained to nourish and cultivate Jin-Qi (Fluids and Qi) to unblock the voice. Generally, Su Mi Gao with wine specializes in nourishing Lung and Stomach dryness, while Tong Sheng Gao specializes in assisting Spleen and Lung Jin-Ye (Body Fluids). Since Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) are primarily governed by the Large Intestine, Qianjin Fang classifies this formula under the Large Intestine Fu organ section.
