Treats stroke (Zhong Feng) with surging phlegm-saliva obstruction. Unconsciousness. Cases where administration of hot-natured medicines is not tolerated or exacerbates symptoms.
Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing), 3 qian; Costus Root (Muxiang), 0.5 qian; Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), 10 slices.
Decoct in water. Take at any time.
Shengfeng Tang (Provincial Formulation) [Source: *Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*] Treats apoplexy (Zhongfu) presenting with locked jaw unable to speak. Deviation of the mouth and eyes. Tendon vessel spasms and pulling. Excessive wind-phlegm congestion.
Xingxiang Tang, remove Muxiang. Use Chen Danxing (Aged Arisaema Cum Bile), 1.5 qian. Add Fangfeng, 1 qian. Sheng Banxia (Raw Pinellia Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), each 0.75 qian.
Da Shengfeng Tang (Provincial Formulation) [Source: *Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*] Treats apoplexy presenting with rebellious phlegm, vomiting, and diarrhea. Deep pulse. Cold extremities.
Xingxiang Tang, remove Muxiang. Use Chen Danxing, 2 qian. Add Fangfeng, Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Sheng Fuzi (Raw Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata), each 1 qian. Quanxie (Scorpion), Sheng Gancao, each 0.5 qian. Note: This formula is essentially Shengfeng Tang without Banxia and Huangqin.
Plus Duhuo, Fuzi, Quanxie. Although these two decoctions distinguish between cold and heat indications, both use 10 slices of Shengjiang to ventilate wind-phlegm; this amount must not be reduced.
Sansheng Yin (Provincial Formulation) [Source: *Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*] Treats sudden collapse from stroke. Deviation of the mouth and eyes. Hemiplegia. Closure by cold pathogens leading to unconsciousness. Upward congestion of phlegm-qi.
The original Xingxiang Tang uses Sheng Nanxing, 1 liang. Muxiang, 3.5 qian. Add Sheng Chuanwu (Raw Aconitum Carlemanii Radix), Sheng Fuzi, each 5 qian. Pound and sieve into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose.
Decoct together with 10 slices of Shengjiang. For sudden collapse due to Qi deficiency, additionally add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), approximately 1 liang, to guide/control the medicinal force. Sansheng Yin is a precise formula for the Stroke section. Although based on Xingxiang Tang,
it actually embodies the subtle application of Da Shengfeng Tang. It stands as a supporting force alongside Xuming Tang. Each has its specific merit. The key lies in seizing the initiative and overwhelming the pathogen; it allows no room for mediocre physicians to debate.
Treats body pain caused by cold-dampness. Spontaneous sweating. Cold sensation in the body.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), 1 liang. Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), 0.5 liang.
These two ingredients. Decoct in water. Remove dregs. Allow to cool. Divide into three doses.
Shenfu Tang Treats Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency. Cold extremities (Jue Ni). Spontaneous sweating.
Shu Fu Tang, remove Baizhu, add Renshen, 1 liang.
Huangqi Fuzi Tang (Here referred to as "Fu Tang", implying Astragalus-Aconite Decoction) Treats Yuan Yang (Original Yang) weakness. Internal movement of deficient wind. Spontaneous sweating.
Shu Fu Tang, remove Baizhu, add Huangqi (Astragali Radix), 1 liang (stir-fried with honey and wine). *Sanyin Fang* treats spontaneous sweating using Huangqi Fuzi Tang, Shu Fu Tang, and Shenfu Tang. All three use Fuzi, 5 qian.
The remaining herbs are all 1 liang. Divide into three doses. If the defensive (Wei) Yang is insecure, use Huangqi Fuzi Tang. If the Spleen Yang is insecure, use Shu Fu Tang. If Kidney Yang is insecure, use Shenfu Tang. For all cases of spontaneous sweating due to Yang deficiency, one cannot depart from these three formulas. Huangqi Fuzi Tang can treat deficient wind. Shu Fu Tang can treat cold-dampness. Shenfu Tang can strengthen the Original Spirit (Yuan Shen).
These three formulas are also used interchangeably. They use only two herbs, without mixing other flavors, taking advantage of their sharp potency to achieve specialized effects. Additionally, there are Mahuang Fuzi Tang, Guizhi Fuzi Tang, Jiangtang Fuzi Tang, Jiaofu Tang, Xingfu, and Dahuang Fuzi Tang, etc. Their methods are rigorous, governing all directions, each possessing the miraculous ability to reverse critical conditions. How could they be subject to ordinary discussion?
Guizhi Fuzi Tang [Source: *Jinkui Yufan Jing*] Treats wind-dampness causing heavy body and vexing pain. Inability to turn over or move.
Shu Fu Tang, remove Baizhu. This formula uses one Fuzi. Add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), 1.2 liang. Gancao (Licorice Root), 6 qian. Shengjiang, 1 liang. Dazao (Ziziphus Jujube Fruit), 12 pieces. Divide into three warm doses.
Baizhu Fuzi Tang [Source: *Jinkui Yufan Jing*. Also known as Jin Xiao Baizhu Fuzi Tang] Treats wind-dampness intermingling. Vexing pain in bone joints. Pulling pain preventing flexion and extension. Pain worsens upon touch. Sweating. Shortness of breath. Dysuria. Aversion to wind, reluctance to remove clothing. Or slight bodily edema.
Shu Fu Tang base uses Baizhu, 1.2 liang. Fuzi, 6 qian. Add Gancao, 6 qian. Shengjiang, 1 liang. Dazao, 12 pieces. Divide into three warm doses.
Gancao Fuzi Tang [Source: *Jinkui Yufan Jing*] Treats wind-dampness presenting with hard stool. Free urination.
Shu Fu Tang base uses Baizhu and Fuzi, each 6 qian. Add Guizhi, 1.2 liang. Gancao, 6 qian. Divide into three warm doses. Guizhi Fuzi Tang, Baizhu Fuzi Tang, and Gancao Fuzi Tang are all established upon the Shu Fu Tang formula. One adds Guizhi, Gancao, Jiang, and Zao to treat heavy body, vexing pain, and inability to turn over.
The pathology is entirely in the exterior/body shell, not involving the interior. Therefore, Baizhu is removed from the base formula so that Guizhi and Fuzi act specifically on the body shell, exerting the effect of driving out wind and expelling dampness. Gancao is used to moderate the nature of Guizhi and Fuzi, preventing profuse sweating. Profuse sweating would expel wind but leave dampness behind. Wind should be expelled urgently; dampness should be attacked gradually. Thus, the pungency of Shengjiang is used to disperse it, and the sweetness of Dazao is used to moderate it. This ensures regulated opening and closing of Ying and Wei, eliminating the risk of wind-dampness re-entering. Another variant adds Gancao, Jiang, and Zao to treat vexing pain and pulling pain in bone joints. This is entirely a disorder of dampness flowing into joints. Therefore, only Gancao is added to the base formula to moderate Baizhu and Fuzi, while Jiang and Zao manage the mechanism of opening and closing. The wind manifestation is originally mild, so Guizhi is not needed. Another variant adds Guizhi and Gancao to treat wind-dampness with hard stool and free urination.
Because the pathogenic qi invades internally from the exterior, Guizhi is added to assist Fuzi in preventing internal invasion by wind-dampness ("thieves"). Gancao is added to assist Baizhu in harmonizing the biased leakage of the bowels and bladder. Thus, although the stool is hard, there is no rationale for using purgative methods.
Fuzi Tang [Source: *Jinkui Yufan Jing*] Treats Shaoyin disease just acquired. Aversion to cold in the back. Deep pulse. Body and joint pain.
Shu Fu Tang plus Fuling (Poria), Baishao (White Peony Root), each 1 liang. Renshen, 6 qian.
Zhenwu Tang [Source: *Jinkui Yufan Jing*. Named Xuanwu Tang in *Qianjin Fang*] Treats Shaoyin diarrhea and abdominal pain. Or cough and vomiting. Dysuria.
Shu Fu Tang base uses Baizhu, 6 qian. Fuzi, one piece (prepared). Add Fuling, Shaoyao (Peony Root), Shengjiang, each 1 liang. For cough, add Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Xixin (Asarum Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). For free urination, remove Fuling.
For diarrhea, remove Baishao, add Ganjiang. For vomiting, remove Fuzi, add Shengjiang. Detailed analysis of Fuzi Tang and Zhenwu Tang shows they differ by only one herb. One treats Shaoyin disease just acquired, presenting with back aversion to cold and a neutral mouth feel, indicating inherent deficiency of True Yang. Hence, Renshen is used to assist the potent action of Fuzi, and Fuling is used to promote the stagnation-relieving action of Baizhu. Furthermore, fearing that raw Fuzi’s harsh nature might damage True Yin, Baishao is used to protect Ying Blood. With Ying Blood secured, True Yin receives nourishment. The other treats Shaoyin disease persisting for two to three days, progressing to four to five days with abdominal pain, spontaneous diarrhea, heavy limbs, or cough/vomiting. The patient exhibits water-qig throughout the interior and exterior. Hence, Shengjiang assists Fuling, Baizhu, and Fuzi to prioritize draining water. Once water is removed, True Yang naturally recovers. It should be known that this syndrome is caused by water-qig suppressing Yang. Yang is originally not severely deficient. Therefore, the dosage of Baizhu and Fuzi in the formula is only half that of Fuzi Tang. Fearing that acrid-dryness might injure Yin, Baishao is used to preserve Ying Blood. Its legislative principle is similar to Fuzi Tang. Even in cases of excessive sweating damaging the meridians, presenting with trembling and desire to fall to the ground, this formula remains applicable.
Fuzi San Treats Yin contraction/spasm (Yin Jing).
Shu Fu Tang base uses both ingredients, 1 liang each. Add Guixin (Cinnamon Bark), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Duhuo, each 0.5 liang. Process into a powder. Take 3–4 qian per dose. Decoct with Jiang and Zao water.
