The *Suwen: Cijian Lun* (Treatise on Acupuncture Taboos) states: "Liver qi arises on the left, Lung qi is stored on the right, Heart qi distributes to the exterior, Kidney qi governs the interior, the Spleen serves as the envoy, and the Stomach serves as the marketplace. Above the diaphragm and blind membrane, there are the 'Parents' (referring to the Heart and Kidney); beside the seventh vertebral segment, there is the 'Small Mind'." This is a definitive statement regarding the Liver being on the left and the Lung on the right; for centuries, who has dared to refute it? When Westerners entered China and performed heart dissections and abdominal autopsies, they actually observed that the Lung is on the left and the Liver is on the right. Consequently, everyone discussed that the teachings handed down by Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo were erroneous. If Huangdi and Qibo were mistaken, then all subsequent authors, starting from Zhang Zhongjing, must also be mistaken? The theory of the Lung being on the left and the Liver on the right seems to have been initiated by Westerners. However, during the Qing Dynasty, when Zhang Ge'er rebelled and was executed according to the law, his abdomen was dissected. Wang Yutian bribed the executioner to examine his internal organs, leading to the writing of *Yilin Gaicuo* (Correction of Errors in the Medical Forest), which strongly argued against the error of the Liver being on the left and the Lung on the right. Thus, those who questioned the errors of previous emperors predated the Westerners. One can only vigorously argue when something lacks evidence. Today, the evidence for the Lung being on the left and the Liver on the right is conclusive; how can one debate this? Moreover, since the Westerners' observations are clear, they cannot possibly be deemed incorrect, so how can the texts handed down by previous emperors be accused of being wrong? The sun rises in the east and its light shines in the west; the sun sets in the west and its light returns to the east. Light is the function of the sun. From this, we know that the Liver need not necessarily be absent from the right, but its function ultimately resides on the left; the Lung need not necessarily be absent from the left, but its function ultimately resides on the right. Regarding the character "Sheng" (生) in "Liver arises on the left," if read as "generation/creation," it is incorrect. Spring brings growth and ascent; clearly, this "Sheng" refers to "growth and ascent." Growth and ascent occur on the left, which is the function of the Liver. "Lung is stored on the right" clearly indicates that the function of Lung Qi is on the right. The character "Cang" (藏) can be read with the falling tone, but reading it with the level tone as "to store/rest" is incorrect. Those who argue that previous emperors were mistaken essentially interpret the characters "Sheng" and "Cang" in the classic text rigidly without deep understanding. Some may say, after the burning of books in the Qin Dynasty, ancient texts might have been supplemented or rewritten by later generations, leading to errors, which is possible. However, this passage flows as a coherent whole and belongs to the exposition of internal viscera; could it be a forgery by later people? To say the Liver is on the right but its function of growth and ascent is on the left, and the Lung is on the left but the function of its visceral Qi is on the right, is analogous to the sun's body being in the east while its function turns toward the west. Although this principle is subtle and hard to believe, let us explain it using simple reasoning and examples from the West. For instance, an electric lamp factory may be dark inside, but light emanates outward; a cannon positioned in the south may hit a target in the north. This is clear proof that the Liver is on the right but its function is on the left, and the Lung is on the left but its function is on the right. If Lung Qi fails to transform in the upper jiao, urination will be obstructed in the lower jiao; if Kidney Qi fails to grasp in the lower jiao, Phlegm-Qi will rush upward. This applies to other meridians as well; why should the Lung and Liver be exceptions? It is incorrect to claim the Westerners are wrong, and even more incorrect to claim the previous emperors were wrong. In historical clinical experiences, diseases severe on the left respond well to Liver-treating herbs; diseases severe on the right respond well to Lung-treating herbs. If this were not the case, it would contradict clinical experience. (Recorded together.)
