Acrid, bitter, and warm in nature. Enters the Qi aspect of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), unblocking Qi throughout the upper, middle, and lower Jiao. It stops nine types of heart pain, expels cold Qi, resolves food stagnation, eliminates vomiting and diarrhea caused by Huoluan (Cholera-like disease), breaks up masses and accumulations, relieves tenesmus in dysentery, strengthens the Spleen, and calms the Fetus. When used as a sovereign herb, it drains; when used as an assistant herb, it tonifies. For cases where measles/rubella eruption is slow, its use is particularly suitable. Combined with Chaenomelis Fructus (Papaya), it treats Huoluan with muscle cramps and abdominal pain. Combined with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuanlian), it treats acute dysentery. Combined with Phellodendri Cortex (Chuanbai) and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji), it treats Hongxiangjiao (Beriberi/Charley Horse) swelling and pain. Paired with baked ginger, it treats cold stagnation. Paired with Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), it treats pediatric penile swelling or retraction due to pain. Paired with Myrrha (Moyao), it treats turbid urine. (If the turbidity is due to heat pathogens, it should not be used.) Paired with Benincasae Semen (Dongguazi), it treats closed eyes and inability to speak (due to loss of consciousness from Middle Qi deficiency). Assisted by Zingiberis Rhizoma (Jiang) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui), it harmonizes the Stomach and Spleen. Guided by Gleditsiae Spina (Zaojiao), it treats heart pain. Combined with Arecae Semen (Binglang), it treats Qi knotting in the middle and lower Jiao.
Regulates Qi; raw usage does not require exposure to fire. Firmly the intestines; usage requires wrapping in flour and baking. For phlegm-Qi issues, grind into juice. For treating dysentery, process with Coptidis Rhizoma. For warming, tonifying, and regulating Qi, decoct and take orally.
Contraindicated for those with dry-heat in the Zang-Fu organs, weak Stomach Qi, Yin deficiency, and Qi collapse.
When Qi stagnates in the upper and Fire is depressed in the middle, the Spleen Qi fails to awaken. Musk Root (Muxiang) breaks stagnation and awakens the Spleen, allowing the Spleen to transmit nourishing Qi to the Heart and distribute essence to the Liver. When Qi and Blood are harmonized, diseases of the Liver and Spleen are naturally eliminated. However, people nowadays often have weak constitutions and insufficient Blood. Administering aromatic and dispersing herbs may consume Qi and dry out Blood, causing Qi and Blood to become stagnant and unsmooth. Therefore, the primary approach should be tonifying Qi and nourishing Yin, assisted by Muxiang to internally regulate Qi and Blood, which is the most perfect method.
Sweet and warm. Its aromatic nature can open Spleen depression; adding a small amount to Spleen and Stomach formulas greatly awakens Spleen Qi. Decocted water for washing treats Hongxiangjiao with knee edema. Mixed with Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen) as powder and burned for fumigation, it treats Laozai (Consumption/TB). Produced in Songzhou, western Sichuan. Those with a sweet taste are superior.
Also known as Shanla and Sansai.
Acrid and warm. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Meridian. Warms the interior and dispels evil, treating cold pain in the heart and abdomen, cold-damp Huoluan, and wind-worm toothache. Paired with Eugeniae Caryophyllati Flos (Dingxiang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), it treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen.
