Also known as Pusun.
Sweet, cold. Dispels dryness and heat, promotes urination, stops thirst (Xiaoke), and harmonizes the blood vessels. Treats labor fever during pregnancy, and manages fetal restlessness with uterine bleeding. When cooked and eaten with millet, it treats dysentery caused by heat-toxin.
The white center of newly sprouted Pu is called [missing character], which can be boiled for juice to decoct herbs.
Sweet, neutral. Enters the blood aspect of the Jueyin meridians of the hand and foot. Cools blood and invigorates blood. Specifically treats all blood diseases, various pains in the heart and abdomen, simultaneously eliminates strangury with retention and spermatorrhea, stops postpartum abdominal pain (Erzhen Tong), and applies externally for tongue swelling and fullness. Combined with Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), it treats various diseases of the lower abdomen. Paired with Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Shengdi Zhi (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix Recens), it treats severe hemorrhage from the mouth and ears. (Quickly tie silk around both breasts to stop the bleeding.)
To move blood, use raw. To stop bleeding, stir-fry until charred black. Do not come into contact with iron utensils.
Pungent, cold. Enters the Taiyin meridian of the hand. Induces sweating, dispels wind, and promotes diuresis. Treats all types of wind-heat swelling and toxicity, wind-dampness numbness and paralysis, nameless wind diseases, and Hongkongjiao (Gouty Arthritis) or traumatic injuries. Assisted by Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn) and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), it treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) complicated with fright. Assisted by Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), it treats body itching due to deficiency. Cooked inside a carp's belly with sesame oil and wine, it treats early-stage Yameichuang (Syphilis). Ground into a paste with a small amount of Bingpian (Borneol) applied to the eye, it treats Rou Pan Jing (Pterygium).
Those with purple backs are superior. Select cleanly, spread on a bamboo sieve to dry in the sun, and use when dry. Take fresh ones, boil for juice, and bathe the whole body for wind diseases and malignant sores. Burn to produce smoke to repel mosquitoes.
Inducing sweating is more effective than Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba). Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency with dry skin (taking it will cause blood exhaustion leading to death) and qi deficiency with wind-pain (taking it will cause unceasing sweating). Both conditions strictly forbid its use.
Incompatible with Gancao (Licorice Root).
Bitter, salty, cold. Softens hardness and drains heat. Dissolves goiters and tumors, stops hernia, disperses cervical lymph node swellings, removes edema, eliminates phlegm-fluid retention, and relieves strangury with retention. Combined with Gancao, it treats Luomadao (Scrofula). (Using them together despite incompatibility intensifies their efficacy.) Paired with Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), it treats Shepanluo (Herpes Zoster).
Rinse with light white wine to remove salt water, then steam together with raw Wudou (Black Soybean) and Zi Bei Tian Kui, dry in the sun, and use. Improper use causes emaciation.
Salty, cold. Treats water diseases, dispels wind-dampness, dissolves goiters and tumors, and facilitates difficult childbirth.
