Attached are excellent external treatment prescriptions extracted by Mr. Wang Pu-zhai from Xiuning (from *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve*), which have proven effective upon repeated trials.
Perilla Herb (*Perillae Folium*), Ephedra Herb (*Ephedrae Herba*), Asarum Root (*Asari Radix*), Ligusticum Rhizome (*Ligustici Rhizoma*), Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (*Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma*), and Fine Tea (*Cha Ye*) in equal parts. Decoct the aforementioned herbs for several boils, pour into a bowl, place a funnel cover over it, and fumigate the nostrils with the steam until sweat appears on the head. Subsequently, blow powdered residue from old bamboo borings into the nasal cavity.
Another method: Take the mother root of the loofah along with its calyx, bake until dry, grind into powder, and blow into the nasal cavity for immediate recovery.
Yet another prescription: Use only Aromatic Costus Root (*Aucklandiae Radix*) ground into powder. Blow into the nose once or twice before sleep; recovery occurs after one night.
Acorus Rhizome (*Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma*, one cun), Croton Seed (*Crotonis Fructus*, one seed, oil removed), and Scorpion (*Scorpio*). Grind these together into powder, mix with juice of green onion (*Allium fistulosum*) to form pills the size of a jujube pit. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear canal.
Another prescription: Take forty-nine Castor Seeds (*Ricini Semen*) and ten Jujube Flesh (*Ziziphi Jujubae Mesocarp*), add Frankincense (*Boswelliae Resina*), and pound into a paste. Form into pills the size of a jujube pit, slightly dry, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear. Women often suffer from Qi stagnation; the Shaoyang Fire belongs to the Gallbladder channel, so deafness tends to occur in the right ear. Men often suffer from excessive sexual desire; the Taiyang Fire belongs to the Bladder's Ministerial Fire, so deafness tends to occur in the left ear. Wealthy individuals often consume rich, fatty, and sweet foods; the Yangming Fire belongs to the Stomach channel, so deafness tends to occur in the left ear.
Use incense furnace soot from temple incense burners (one qian) and Borneol (*Borneolum Syntheticum*, 1.5 qian). Grind together into powder and blow into the ear for immediate recovery.
Use crab shell (*Scyllae Carapax* - note: text says 'wan ke', likely referring to crab shell or similar crustacean shell used in local practice), boiled in Licorice Root (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) water, calcined until carbonized but retaining efficacy (*cun xing*), ground into fine powder, and blown into the ear for immediate recovery.
Sheep Brain (*Ovis aries cerebrum*) and Calcined Gan Duan Shi (Gypsum Fibrosum calcined until red, then turning green, and finally returning to red). Place on the ground to eliminate fire heat, grind into extremely fine powder (one qian). Plum Blossom Borneol (*Borneolum Syntheticum*) is used in spring and summer (one fen) and in autumn and winter (five li). Mix all into powder, store in a porcelain bottle. To use, dip a smooth hairpin in cool water and apply to the eyes.
Kaempferia Galanga Rhizome (*Kaempferiae Galangae Rhizoma*, three qian), Raw Alum (*Alumen*, three qian), and Chalcanthite (*Chalcanthitum*, one qian four fen). Grind all together into extremely fine powder. For each use, take one fen, dissolve in boiling water in half a wine cup, and wash three to four times daily.
