Ancient times had physicians in charge of caring for the diseases of the people. For those with illnesses, they were treated separately. Upon death, the cause was recorded and reported to the chief physician. At that time, people could die of old age without suffering from premature death or epidemics. In later generations, royal governance lacked much, and the appointment of physicians became mere formalities. Commoners in markets and wealthy households could still hire doctors with their own funds, but the poor in remote villages could not! Bowing heads and suppressing hearts, mournfully awaiting death, this is one disaster; medicinal materials such as herbs, animals, and fish, as well as "Five-Mineral" medicines (Wushi San, a type of mineral-based pill), were mostly concentrated in the capital. In remote and barren areas, even with great wealth, it was impossible to obtain even a small amount, which is another disaster; contemporary physicians often used contraindicated treatments that killed patients, while patients endured pain and harm, daring not to publicly denounce their errors, which is yet another disaster. I felt deeply compassionate about this. Previously, I obtained a book of emergency prescriptions, carrying it with me at all times, using it to treat myself or others, mostly with effective results. Occasionally, I added new findings according to category. Erroneous and ineffective ones were deleted, and then it was handed over to printers for publication. Human emotions are uniform; who does not love their own body, and who does not love their parents and flesh and blood? Yet when illness and pain cannot be relieved, people often wait helplessly for death. Forced to resort to praying to spirits and performing rituals to ward off disasters, they exhaust their wealth and go bankrupt, only to find no help at all. How does this compare to the heart of benevolence and filial piety? If this prescription is practiced, it might save one ten-thousandth of the poor masses. Is it not suitable to recommend it to the wealthy?
Written by Zhang Shiche, Master of Zhiyuan Siming, on the 15th day of the sixth month of summer in the Gengxu year (1550 AD) of the Ming Dynasty.
Treating Five Types of Apparent Death (hanging, drowning, beating/falling, crushing by wood/stone, postpartum blood syncope, sudden death from evil qi/spirit attack, sleep paralysis). As long as the heart area remains warm, rescue is possible. Use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) soaked in boiling water seven times, ground into powder, formed into pills the size of beans, and blown into the nose. Sneezing indicates revival. Alternatively, use Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) ground into powder and blown into the nose, which is also excellent.
Another method: Urgently moxa Renzhong (GV26) and the points on both big toes one leek-leaf width away from the nail bed, three to five moxa cones each, and the patient will revive. Moxa Qizhong (CV8) for one hundred cones is also effective.
Rescuing Hanging Victims: For those hanging high, gently hold them, untie the rope, do not cut the rope. Lay them flat on bedding. One person steps on the victim's shoulders, pulls the hair taut, keeping tension without slackening; one person presses on the chest and rubs repeatedly; one person massages and extends the arms and legs. If stiff, gradually bend them. Press the abdomen simultaneously. After some time, although breath returns from the mouth and eyes open, control may still be lost. Shortly after, administer a small amount of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and rice gruel to moisten the throat until swallowing resumes. Then have two people blow air into both ears using a reed tube; none will fail to revive. From morning to evening, even if cold, rescue is possible; from evening to morning, due to strong Yin Qi, it is difficult to rescue.
Another method: One person covers the mouth and nose tightly to prevent air escape; another person rubs the neck marks. When both rescuers feel shortness of breath, the victim revives.
Rescuing Drowning Victims: Those drowned for one night can still be saved. Use Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) powder wrapped in cotton and inserted into the anus. Shortly after emerging from water, the patient revives.
Another method: Place the rescued person supine on a large stool, elevating the feet on bricks. Rub salt into the umbilicus until water flows out naturally. Do not lift the person upside down. Anyone with warmth below the heart can be saved.
Another method: Quickly loosen clothing belts, moxa Qizhong (CV8), and have two people blow air into the ears using reed tubes; the patient will revive.
Another method: For a rescued drowning victim, place the victim's abdomen horizontally across the back of a live cow. Assistants support the sides and lead the cow slowly to expel water from the stomach. If conscious, administer Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) or rub teeth with fresh ginger. If no cow is available, have a living person lie supine on a long bench, placing the victim's abdomen against the living person's body as described above; once water exits, the victim revives.
Rescuing Crushing/Fall Deaths: For those crushed by wood/stone or fallen from heights, unable to speak due to severed Qi, quickly pry open the mouth and pour hot urine inside.
Another method: For trauma causing blood stasis attacking the heart, leading to chest oppression and pain: Burn five dried Lotus Leaves (Nelumbinis Nelumbo) until smoke ceases. Take three qian with warm child's urine on an empty stomach, three times daily.
Another method: For trauma causing blood stasis attacking the heart, take one bowl of warm urine orally.
Rescuing Sudden Death from Evil Qi/Spirit Attack: Use fresh Acori Tatarini Rhizoma (Changpu), crush and squeeze juice, instill into nose or mouth to revive.
Another method: For sudden death with warm heart: Dry Bai Cao Hua (various flowers), soak in water, seal and bury for 100 days. Decoct in a clay pot until thick, form into pills the size of Gleditsiae seeds. Place one pill in the patient's mouth; revival occurs shortly.
Another method: Apply mud from the bottom of a well to the eyes. Hold the head downward into the well, call the person's name, and they will rise.
Another method: Crush Jiucai (Allii Tuberosi Herba) to extract juice, instill into nose.
Another method: Cut rooster comb blood, blow into nose via reed tube, apply to face. Reapply when dry, surround with ash, and the patient rises immediately.
Another method: Treating Spirit Attack causing stabbing pain in chest/abdomen unrelieved by massage: Decoct Shu Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium Preparatum) in water and drink. If sudden heart pain caused by pathogenic Qi, vomit worms may occur.
Another method: For sudden death with mouth open and opisthotonos: Moxa behind the big toenails on both hands and feet, fourteen cones each.
Another method: For sudden death with limb flaccidity and incontinence: Boil one sheng of horse manure in three dou of water to reduce to two dou of decoction; wash the body. Also, mix one sheng of cow manure with warm wine and pour into mouth. Moxa one cun below heart, two cun above umbilicus, four cun below umbilicus, one hundred cones each.
Another method: For sudden death with pulse but no breath: Blow Acori Tatarini Rhizoma powder into nose and ear apertures, and place under tongue.
Another method: For severe cramping pain in chest/flank/abdomen resembling spirit attack, unrelieved by massage, or hematemesis/epistaxis: Decoct a fist-sized piece of Shu Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium Preparatum) in five zhong of water to three zhong; drink frequently.
Another method: Mix one zan of salt with two zhan of water, ingest. Splash with cold water to cure.
Treating Sleep Paralysis Sudden Death and various acute collapse syndromes, named Banxia San (Pinellia Powder): Use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) washed seven times in boiling water, ground to powder. Blowing a small amount into the nose treats cases with warm heart. In emergencies without medicine, urgently moxa Renzhong (GV26) and points on big toes one leek-leaf width from nails, three to five cones each, for immediate revival.
Another method: Rescuing sleep paralysis death: Do not shout near the patient. Firmly pinch heels and toe nail beds, spit on the face. If unconscious, slightly move position and call gently. Keep existing lights; do not light new ones.
Another method: Use Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) powder blown into nose.
Another method: Decoct Tao Zhi (Persicae Ramulus) and Liu Zhi (Salicis Ramulus) from the east side, three to four cun each, in two zhong of water; administer warm.
Another method: Use soil from the center of the stove against the pot bottom, crush to powder. Take two qian mixed with fresh well water. Blow half-nail amount into nose.
Another method: Blow into ears with reed tube, or pour salt water, or instill half zan of Jiucai (Allii Tuberosi Herba) juice into nose. In winter, dig roots and crush to juice.
Rescuing Heat Stroke Deaths in Summer: Do not use cold water or cold objects on the body; cold exposure causes death. Move to shade. Quickly take hot earth from the road, make a depression in the navel, and fill with urine. Grind hot road earth with garlic, mix with water, strain, and pour down.
Another method: Decoct Huiliao (Polygoni Avicularis Herba) ash juice strongly, one bowl, administer to revive.
Rescuing Frostbite and Cold Water Drowning with faint breath: Remove wet clothes, wrap in warm clothes from a living person. Roast rice grains, apply heat pack to heart area. Or roast stove ash, put in bag, apply to heart area, replace when cool. Ensure warmth transmits. Administer small amounts of warm wine, ginger soup, or gruel to revive.
Another method: Wrap in felt or straw mat, tie securely on a flat board. Two people roll the body back and forth like rolling a mat. Revive when limbs are warm. Do not use fire to dry; forcing cold Qi inward causes death.
