The tongue is the orifice of the Heart and is connected to the meridians of the Spleen. If Heat from the Heart and Spleen obstructs and rushes upward, it causes the tongue to swell, gradually enlarging until it fills the mouth; this condition is named Mu She (Wood Tongue). It is appropriate to administer Mutong San (see Fetal Heat) internally and apply Wuyu San externally. Another condition is Chong She (Double Tongue), which is also caused by accumulated Heat in the Heart and Spleen. Due to abundant Qi and Blood, a new growth emerges attached to the root of the tongue, resembling a tongue but slightly shorter and smaller. This can be treated by applying Zhen Puhuang (Real Cinnamon Fern Spore) mixed with Huangbai End (Phellodendron Bark Powder), or Yaxiao (Niter) may also be used.
Heat in the Spleen organ causes the tongue meridians to become slightly tight, resulting in the tongue frequently protruding; this is called Nong She (Playing Tongue). One must absolutely avoid using Cold medicines and purgatives; instead, Xiehuang San is suitable. If there is excessive drinking of water, it indicates deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach with insufficient Body Fluids.
At birth, some infants have a membrane under the tongue, resembling a pomegranate seed, or abnormalities on the lips that prevent vocalization. Quickly break it with fingernails or cut it with reed grass; once blood flows, the infant will revive. If bleeding does not stop, apply Fa Hui (Hair Ash) mixed with Zhuzhi (Pig Fat) to the area.
Wuyu San:
Wuyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone, 5 qian) Changlang (Dung Beetle) Puhuang (Cinnamon Fern Spore, each 2.5 qian) Baifan (Alum, 0.5 qian).
Mix with Ji Zi Huang (Egg Yolk) and apply to the tongue; swallowing saliva is harmless.
Qingye San: Treats Chong She (Double Tongue) and Kou Chuang (Mouth Sores).
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) Puxiao (Mirabilite, each 1 qian) Longnao (Borneol, 1 zi).
Mix with honey, dip a goose feather, and apply.
Xiehuang San: Treats Nong She (Playing Tongue) and also Mu She (Wood Tongue).
Huoxiang Ye (Agastache Leaf) Chao Shanzhi (Stir-fried Gardenia) Shigao (Gypsum) Gancao (Licorice) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia)
After birth, infants' mouths should be inspected diligently. If Kou Mi (Oral Thrush/Mucosal Ulceration) occurs, it is due to Heat transferring from the Bladder to the Small Intestine, causing obstruction in the intestines and diaphragm, leading to Heat rising and forming oral ulcers. This is treated with Daochi San combined with Wu Ling San.
E Kou (Goose Mouth): Newborns have white flakes covering the tongue, resembling a goose's mouth, caused by fetal Heat. Wrap hair around the finger, dip into natural Mint Juice, and wipe.
If it persists, wipe again with thick decoction of Millet. Externally, apply Guo Huangdan (Processed Red Lead Oxide) to the affected area.
Within one day after birth, if the upper and lower gums suddenly turn white, resembling teeth, it is called Ma Ya Jing (Horse Tooth Palpitation); this usually requires no treatment. However, if caused by over-warming during care, leading to accumulated Heat steaming upward and causing mouth sores, apply powder made from Chao Jiao Ganjiang (Stir-fried Scorched Ginger) and Huanglian (Coptis). Additionally, the nursing mother should take Mutong San (see Fetal Heat).
If it does not heal, soak the feet in Fan Tang (Alum Decoction) for half a day, then apply powder of Mi Zhi Huangbai (Honey-fried Phellodendron) and Chao Jiangcan (Stir-fried Silkworm) for immediate effect. If only angular cheilitis (rotten sores at the corners of the mouth) exists, apply Fa Hui (Hair Ash) mixed with Zhuzhi (Pig Fat) to cure it.
Daochi San:
Shengdi (Rehmannia Root) Mutong (Akebia Stem) Chi Fu (Red Poria) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) Gancao (Licorice) Dengxin (Juncus Effusus)
Wu Ling San:
Zhuling (Polyporus) Chi Fu (Red Poria) Chi Shao (Red Peony Root) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala) Rougui (Cinnamon Bark)
Kou Mi San: Highly effective for treating oral ulceration.
Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, each 1 liang) Xionghuang (Realgar) Moyao (Myrrh, each 2 qian) Pian Nao (Borneol, 0.5 qian).
Grind into powder and sprinkle dryly onto the sores.
