This formula can substitute for Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder) and Sansheng San (Three Saints Powder). Whenever pathogenic factors are excess in the Upper Jiao, whether due to phlegm, food retention, or rebellious Qi obstruction, this formula may be used as a substitute.
Crush the Radish Seeds (Lai Fu Zi), mix with warm water, stir, and take the clear decoction slowly. Soon after, vomiting will occur. Even if vomiting does not happen immediately, the pathogen will descend downwards.
Another method: Grind Radish Seeds into powder, mix with warm water, take one spoonful, and after some time, expectoration of saliva and foam will cure the condition.
Treats sudden collapse from wind-stroke, with excessive phlegm-fluids obstructing, Qi closure and obstruction. First open the orifices to induce slight vomiting of thin fluids, then administer other medicines. (After waking, do not administer large doses of medicine immediately; regulate treatment gradually, otherwise it may harm the body.) It also treats throat bi (obstruction) preventing eating.
Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zao Jiao) [four pods, remove skin and string, roast], Bai Fan (Alumen, 白矾) one liang. Grind into powder, take five fen mixed with warm water, or add Li Lu (Veratrum Root, 藜芦). (Li Lu can vomit out wind-phlegm and is good at unblocking...)
Wu Hegao said: Clear Yang is above, turbid Yin is below, like heaven covering and earth supporting, there is no sudden collapse. If turbid pathogens rebel upwards, Clear Yang loses its position and becomes inverted.
Treat... as the Sovereign herb... phlegm... (Dan [text fragment])
Zhang Hezi added Li Lu (Veratrum Root) to Chang Shan (Dichroa Root) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root), naming it Chang Shan San (Dichroa Powder), to vomit out malaria phlegm. (Gan Cao combined with Chang Shan inevitably causes vomiting.)
"San Yin Fang" treats dry Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), where one wants to vomit but cannot, wants to purge but cannot, with severe abdominal pain. (Huoluan refers to sudden disorder. External infection and internal injury cause Yin-Yang separation and struggle between pathogen and healthy Qi, resulting in vomiting, purging, and central cramping. Pathogens in the Upper Jiao cause vomiting; in the Lower Jiao, purging; in the Middle Jiao, both. This is wet Huoluan, mild and easy to treat. If vomiting/purging fails, pathogens cannot exit, obstructing healthy Qi, blocking Yin-Yang, leading to rapid death, commonly known as 'Intestine-Twisting Sha'. Do not give grain food; even rice water swallowed will cause death.)
Burnt Salt (Shao Yan), Hot Child Urine (Tong Bian). Drink three times, vomit three times.
When vomiting and purging fail, pathogens knot in the Middle Jiao. Salty taste softens hardness, breaking stubborn phlegm and old food. Roasting makes it bitter, thus inducing vomiting. Tong Bian is the descending Qi of the human body, guiding fire downwards along its original path; its salty-cold taste descends fire rapidly. (This results from extreme Spleen Earth stagnation failing to vent, causing internal heat disturbance and failure of Yin-Yang interaction.) Salt surges upward, urine drains downward, opening the Middle Jiao. The formula is extremely simple yet has life-saving power; do not ignore it. ("Zhun Sheng" states: Salt mixed with Tong Bian is not only to descend blocked Yin. Since Yin is blocked, Blood also fails to move; blood-moving herbs should be added.)
Use Burnt Salt alone. Mix with cooked water, drink, and use finger to stimulate throat for vomiting, named Shao Yan Tan Tu Fa (Burnt Salt Throat-Stimulating Vomiting Method). Treats food retention, pain radiating to chest/diaphragm, fullness and obstruction, cold extremities, absence of Chi pulse. (Food fills Taiyin, suppressing Gallbladder/Liver Qi from ascending. Two excesses clash, causing pain. Yang Qi cannot diffuse, causing cold extremities. Lower Jiao isolation causes absent Chi pulse. Salty taste moistens downward and softens hardness, breaking accumulations and inducing vomiting. Undigested food exits from above, clearing blockage; this is also "reaching the stagnant Wood". Classic says: Pulse above present, below absent, patient should vomit; if not, death ensues. Some ask: Food fills Taiyin, chest chaotic, Cun pulses should dominate, why absent Chi? Answer: Independent Yang does not generate, independent Yin does not grow. Heaven's function is below, generating things; Earth's function is above, storing things. This is Heaven-Earth interaction allowing flow. Yang fire root is underground; Yin water source is heavenly. Zang organs manage有形 (form/substance), which is Yin/Water. Food blocking above cuts off Zang source; source cut, water doesn't flow down, hence absent Chi pulse.) Qian Jin Fang uses this method, three drinks/three vomits, treating Huoluan, Gu poison, retained food, abdominal pain, cold Qi, Gui Qi. (Says: This method surpasses drugs. Use first for such diseases. Also Shi Jue (Food Syncope): sudden collapse, inability to speak/move limbs. If treated as wind-stroke...)
Another method: Take a little salt, fry in hot pan until red, add clear water, boil until just before rolling, stir, test taste, keep slightly bland, then... [text cut off]
Another method: Any drug can induce vomiting; simply prepare as decoction according to syndrome, stimulate throat to vomit, nothing is impossible.
