Treats hemiplegia with numbness of the hands and feet due to stroke, which persists for a long time without healing. There is damp-phlegm and dead blood (stasis) in the meridians, causing sudden pain in one or two spots between the legs and arms.
Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Preparata, processed, umbilicus and skin removed) Caowu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata, processed, skin removed) Dannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis cum Bile, six liang) Dilong (Pheretima aspergillum, washed and dried by roasting) Ruxiang (Resina Draconis, oil removed) Moyao (Resina Olibani)
These disperse cold-dampness. Earthworms penetrate the joints; after a long time, blood stasis occurs, and this formula generates new blood. Two [characters missing/corrupted]
Treats sudden coma, loss of consciousness, copious phlegm-saliva, and slurred speech due to acute stroke. (Li Dongyuan said: Stroke is not caused by external wind but is a disease of the original qi itself. People over forty years old, when their qi is declining, or those whose qi is damaged by worry, joy, or anger, often suffer from this condition; it is rare in their prime. Even among the obese, it occasionally occurs, also due to excess form but deficient qi.)
Sheng Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile, raw, one liang) Sheng Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, raw, skin removed, five qian) Sheng Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, raw, skin removed, five qian) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, two qian). Take one liang per dose. Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, one liang) and decoct.
Nanxing is acrid and hot, dispersing wind and eliminating phlegm. Fuzi is heavy and potent, warming the spleen and driving out cold. Chuanwu is light and penetrating, warming the spleen and driving out wind. These two herbs circulate through the meridians, reaching everywhere.
After taking the medicine, the patient regains consciousness as the qi flows. This is a formula that moves the meridians and treats phlegm, like a general who breaches the gates and captures the king. One must use a substantial amount of Ren Shen to control the pathogenic factors and supplement the true qi; otherwise, it will not only be ineffective but also cause defeat. The principle behind the ancients' use of Renshen and Fuzi can be seen here. If there is urinary incontinence, hand relaxation, open mouth, or snoring, it is considered untreatable. However, many survive after taking the previous medicines. Yu Jiayan said: Zang organs are yin and can withstand pure yang medicines; Fu organs are yang and require one or two yin medicines to restrain their hyperactive heat. If the disease is superficial in the meridians, one should also add herbs that harmonize Ying and Wei and promote circulation.)
(Zhizhi Fang) Treats facial paralysis with deviation of the mouth and eyes due to stroke, without other symptoms. (The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian runs alongside the mouth and around the lips; the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian starts at the inner canthus. Yangming internally accumulates phlegm-heat, while Taiyang is externally struck by wind, causing traction and stiffness leading to deviation. Furthermore, if Liver Wood is deficient, Metal transforms and shortens to overcome it. When Wood is overcome by Metal, Earth lacks restraint, leading to deviation of the mouth and eyes, frequent twitching of the mouth and eyes, thus generating internal wind. The ears and nose remain relatively still, so the wind subsides.)
Baifuzi (Radix Typhonii Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Quanxie (Scorpio) ground into powder in equal parts. Take two qian per dose, mixed with wine.
Wu Hegao said: Drugs like Qiongjie (Qinjiao) and Fangfeng can expel external wind, but they do not treat internally generated wind. (When the Liver has heat, it generates its own wind, which differs from external contraction.)
