(From *Jingui Yaolue*) Treats "Sunken Meridian" syndrome in women. Manifestations include continuous dripping of dark menstrual blood, or excessive menstrual flow and prolonged dripping due to damage to the Chong and Ren meridians.
The prescription is found in Volume 10, under the section "Obstetrics and Gynecology".
Women's menstruation, although discharged from the lower orifice, is actually governed by the Qi of the Heart and Stomach; therefore, its ascent and descent follow a regular cycle. The term "dripping discharge" mentioned here refers to the absence of such a regular cycle. The dark color of the discharged blood indicates long-standing blood stasis (the original text contains lacunae or textual errors, implying that purple-black color signifies stasis).
(From *Liangfang*) Treats amenorrhea following menstruation, caused by blood deficiency leading to spirit depletion. (Women are prone to sentimentality and often harbor excessive worries. Excessive worry damages the Heart; when the Heart is damaged, it fails to generate Blood, leading to blood deficiency. When blood is deficient, the Liver has nothing to store, causing the Chong and Ren meridians to wither, resulting in amenorrhea. The Classics state: "When menstruation does not arrive, it is due to the blockage of the Bao Mai [Uterine Vessels]." The Bao Mai belongs to the Heart and connects to the uterus. Now, if Qi rebels upward and presses against the Lung, the Heart Qi cannot descend, thus menstruation does not arrive.)
Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen, de-oiled), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine), Juan Bai (Selaginellae Tamariscinae Herba, 5 qian), Ze Lan (Leonuri Herba), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, 2 liang), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang).
Made into honey pills, taken with rice water to unblock amenorrhea.
(From Li Dongyuan) Treats metrorrhagia and metrostaxis accompanied by fever, spontaneous sweating, shortness of breath, fatigue, and anorexia. (This is caused by injury from overwork.)
Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (see "Qi Gate" section), added with Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Hei Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus Carbonized), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), decocted and taken.
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang tonifies Qi and raises Yang, reduces fever, and stops sweating. Adding Bai Shao astringes Yin, and Hei Shan Zhi clears heat.
Additionally, Li Dongyuan recorded Sheng Yang Ju Jing Tang in *Lan Shi Mi Cang*. Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, peeled and de-embryoned, ground), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos).
If the Right Chi pulse is empty upon pressure, it indicates that the Fire of the Ming Men (Gate of Life) is also exhausted. Observing heat signs in the mouth requires nourishing Blood; one must strictly tonify the Ming Men to prevent the collapse of Yang Qi.
(From *Liangfang*) Treats prolonged menstruation, as well as metrorrhagia and metrostaxis with purple-black clots. (The Chong and Ren meridians are the sea of the twelve meridians. Without injury, Yin and Yang are harmonious, and Qi and Blood are balanced. If overexertion injures the Zang-Fu organs, causing deficiency of Qi in the Chong and Ren meridians, they fail to constrain the menstrual blood, resulting in sudden heavy bleeding. Alternatively, due to Yin deficiency with Yang hyperactivity, pathogenic heat attacks and injures the Chong and Ren meridians; when blood is affected by heat, it flows recklessly. A rapid and hurried pulse is favorable if small, but unfavorable if large. Purple-black clots indicate extreme heat manifesting with water-like characteristics, not cold. *Yu Ji Wei Yi* states: "Blood coagulates when exposed to cold." Since the blood has flowed and is purple-black, it is known not to be cold.)
Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, calcined, 4 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried with wine), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried with wine, 3 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, steamed with child's urine), Chu Pi (Stemonae Radix, 1.5 liang).
Prolonged menstruation occurs because Yin Qi is insufficient to control the fire in the Bao Luo (uterine collaterals), exceeding normal limits. Metrorrhagia and metrostaxis represent deficiency combined with heat. Purple-black clots... (text cuts off, implying heat-induced stasis) ...to restrain... (text cuts off, implying clearing heat and cooling blood)
