The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) discusses malaria but does not record treatment methods; although the *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) transmits treatment methods for malaria, trials of them have proven ineffective. Generally, when people consume excessive amounts of cold substances during the hot summer months, it lightly injures the Stomach Qi or severely injures the Spleen Qi. If at the onset there is first chills followed by fever, occurring once a day, this is Wei Malaria (Stomach Malaria), which is easy to treat. Either employing emesis or purgation, recovery will occur within no more than ten days. The orthodox method of Bian Que is to administer Six-Element Decoction (Six-God Pill); for severe cases, moxibustion on Zhongwan (CV12) for thirty cones achieves cure. (This condition involves shallow pathogenic invasion and mild disease, yet many overlook it. In the third year of Yongzheng, during the transition from autumn to winter, everyone suffered from this illness. Heavy doses of warming and tonifying agents might have allowed some to escape death; if medication was administered lightly causing only slight symptom relief, immediate fecal incontinence would ensue. Those who employed clearing and resolving methods combined with Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) could not revive patients. In the Ningbo and Shaoxing regions, deaths were numerous because they abused cold and cooling herbs; despite repeated errors, they remained unawakened.)
This condition arises primarily from deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) or exhaustion of the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) Yang, excessive worry and fear injuring Heart Qi, thereby allowing demonic pathogens to enter through the deficiency, causing coma and interaction with spirits. One should administer Sleep-Saint Powder, apply moxibustion to Juque (CV14) for two hundred cones to naturally extinguish the demonic qi, and then take Ginger and Aconite Decoction for recovery. (How can evil spirits attach to a person? It is the person who attracts them. If one stands upright, possesses a bright heart, does not fail one's sovereign and parents, and feels no shame in solitude, spirits and gods will respect and revere one, leaving no room for evil spirits to take advantage. Only those who are dark, biased, base, dim-witted, and weak are prone to attracting such phenomena, appearing as if possessed by evil spirits, but ultimately these are not evil spirits. Rather, it is due to injury of Zang-Fu Qi leading to the loss of Shen (Spirit) and Hun (Ethereal Soul). Thus, if the Liver is injured, Yi (Intellect) becomes unsettled, and figures in white clothes come to strike; if the Heart is injured, Shen becomes uneasy, and figures in black clothes come to destroy; if the Spleen is injured, Yi is absent, and figures in green clothes come to beat and humiliate; if the Lungs are injured, Po (Corporeal Soul) fails to reside, and figures in red clothes come to bully; if the Kidneys are injured, Zhi (Willpower) becomes hesitant, and figures in yellow clothes come to rebuke and insult. These are all results of injury to Shen-Qi, leading to hallucinations and perceptions that manifest unconsciously in bodily movements and speech, resembling possession. The orthodox treatment lies solely in calming the Shen and Hun, stabilizing the Zhi and Po, examining which Zang-Fu is deficient and tonifying it, and identifying which Zang-Fu is being attacked and controlling it.)
Treatment Cases:
A woman, due to insufficiency of Heart Qi, had youths attaching to her body every night. Examination of the six pulse positions revealed no pathology. I instructed her to receive moxibustion on Shangwan (CV13) for fifty cones. At night, when the ghosts came, they could not approach closer than five chi from the bed. After taking Ginger and Aconite Decoction and Heart-Calming Pill for five days, she recovered.
The wife of a nobleman was possessed by a ghost; various methods proved ineffective. A Daoist priest wrote a Heavenly Physician Talisman and petitioned the Jade Emperor, also without effect. I instructed her to take three qian of Sleep-Saint Powder, apply moxibustion to Juque (CV14) for fifty cones, and further apply moxibustion to Shimen (CV5) for three hundred cones. Upon reaching two hundred cones, the patient opened her eyes normally. After taking Ginger and Aconite Decoction and Heart-Calming Pill for five days, she recovered.
A woman suffering from Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) had her Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) nearly depleted and was possessed by a ghost. I used large moxa cones to moxibustion Guanyuan (CV4). She found the pain unbearable, so I had her take three qian of Sleep-Saint Powder, then resumed moxibustion until one hundred and fifty cones, at which point she woke up. Through continued administration of medicine and moxibustion, reaching three hundred cones total, the demonic pathogens departed, and the consumption ailment improved.
