Whereas the area below the waist is governed by Kidney Qi (Shen Qi, kidney energy), Kidney deficiency leads to weakness in the lower body and dysfunction of the sinews and bones. One may take Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill) and moxa-apply the Guan Yuan (CV-4, Sea of Energy) acupoint; then Kidney Qi will recover and growth will resume, allowing natural movement.
If Kidney Qi is exhausted and collapsing, even moxibustion will be of no benefit. (In the *Huang Di Nei Jing* [Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon], this syndrome is generally described as deficient heat in the five zang organs; hence, later physicians prescribed Yin-nourishing formulas such as Hu Qian Wan [Tiger Crouching Pill], Jin Gang Wan [Diamond Pill], and Di Huang Wan [Rehmannia Pill]. Li Dongyuan attributed it to damp-heat and regarded Qian Xing San [Qianxing Powder] as a miraculous remedy for flaccidity syndromes, yet these views should not be rigidly adhered to. In fact, cold-deficiency syndromes are quite numerous; careful clinical examination will clarify the distinction.)
Clinical Case:
An elderly man suffered from pain in his waist and legs, rendering him unable to walk. He was instructed to undergo 300 moxa cones applied to the Guan Yuan (CV-4) acupoint and to take Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill); he recovered his strength and returned to normal.
During the summer months, consuming cold foods damages the Spleen and Kidney. The Spleen corresponds to Earth, thus manifesting as yellow discoloration. Furthermore, Spleen Qi deficiency and collapse cause turbid qi to stagnate in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), preventing proper ascending and descending movements. Consequently, the eyes and entire body turn yellow, and the six pulse positions are deep and tight. It is appropriate to administer Cao Shen Dan (Grass Spirit Pill), as well as Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), Quan Zhen Dan (Complete Truth Pill), Lai Fu Dan (Returning Revitalization Pill), etc. For severe cases, apply 100 moxa cones to the Shi Dou (ST-23) acupoint. Cold and cooling agents are strictly prohibited. (The primary requirement in treating this syndrome is to distinguish between Yin and Yang. Yang Jaundice is characterized by a bright and lustrous skin color, a surging and slippery pulse, good appetite with thirst; these are excess syndromes that can be cured by clearing damp-heat and promoting urination. If accompanied by fever and a floating pulse, releasing the exterior may also be employed. Yin Jaundice presents with a dull and dark skin color, mental fatigue, poor appetite, loose stools, and a weak pulse; heavy use of warming and tonifying methods is required. This will promote urination and cause the yellow discoloration to fade. If mistakenly treated as Yang Jaundice, the complications will be serious. Another type, Gallbladder Jaundice, arises from sudden fright or terror, damaging the Gallbladder so that bile leaks outward. This condition is extremely severe; only if detected early and treated with heavy warming and tonifying methods can it be salvaged.)
Clinical Case:
A patient presented with generalized yellowing of the body, red urine, and dysuria. After 50 moxa cones were applied to the Shi Dou (ST-23) acupoint, and Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) and Quan Zhen Dan (Complete Truth Pill) were administered, he recovered.
Due to damage to the Spleen and Kidney meridians, excessive sexual activity injures the Kidney, while drinking cold beverages injures the Spleen. Thus, the eyes and entire body exhibit a yellow-black hue, urine is scanty and red, borborygmus occurs frequently, limbs feel fatigued and heavy, food intake decreases, and the six pulses are wiry and tight, resulting in Kidney Consumption (Shen Lao). Urgent application of 300 moxa cones to the Ming Guan (SP-16? Note: Context implies a specific point, likely ST-25 or similar abdominal point, but text says Ming Guan) acupoint, along with administration of Cao Shen Dan (Grass Spirit Pill) and Yan Shou Dan (Longevity Pill), will lead to recovery. If cooling medicines are taken, death is inevitable.
