The Hegu (LI4) acupoint is located in the "tiger's mouth," between the first and second metacarpal bones. It treats headache and facial swelling, various types of malaria, febrile diseases with anhidrosis (absence of sweating), blurred vision, toothache, nasal congestion or epistaxis (nosebleed), and throat obstruction preventing speech. When needling, one must gauge the depth appropriately; after treatment, the patient will be relieved.
Weizhong (BL40) is located at the center of the popliteal crease where the artery beats. It treats heaviness in the lower back making it difficult to lift the body, a sensation of heavy pressure on the spine, pain in the hip joint due to wind-bi syndrome, febrile conditions that are hard to cool down, and inability to extend or flex both knees. Needling this point ensures recovery.
Chengshan (BL57) is located below the belly of the gastrocnemius muscle ("fish belly"), between the separated muscles. It can treat lower back pain, chronic constipation, edema of the lower limbs (Hong Kong foot) with swelling below the knees, chills with sore and sour waist pain, and acute muscle spasms due to cholera-like disorder. Needling this point leads to cure.
Kunlun (BL60) is located posterior to the lateral malleolus of the foot, seeking towards the heel. It treats ankle swelling, pain in the lumbosacral region, unbearable pain in the feet and hips, headache, stiffness in the shoulder and back, asthma with Qi rushing up to the heart, difficulty walking with both feet, and groaning upon movement. To seek relief, one must needle this point.
Huantiao (GB30) is located at the hip joint (greater trochanter area). With the body turned to the side, extending the lower leg and flexing the upper leg allows for its location. Needling it primarily treats limb spasticity and contracture, cold-wind bi syndrome, hemiatrophy (wasting of one side of the body), and dementia. Both acupuncture and moxibustion can be used here without risk of error.
Yanglingquan (GB34) is located one cun below the knee, in the middle of the lateral aspect of the fibular head. It treats inability to extend and flex the knee and legs, contractures resembling those of an old man, inability to walk despite wanting to, cold-bi syndrome, and hemiplegia/stroke. Remember to needle slightly/shallowly to realize its greatest efficacy.
Tongli (HT5) is located on the posterior aspect of the wrist, one cun from the transverse crease. It treats frequent groaning and yawning, mental restlessness (aojiao) and palpitations. In excess patterns, it presents as swelling of the four limbs and obstructed Qi in the throat; in deficiency patterns, it presents as aphonia, bitter vomiting with chest pain radiating to the chest, elbow and arm pain, and redness of the head, cheeks, and face. A needle depth of three fen is exquisite, and its miraculous effects are endless.

It mainly treats hemiplegia (partial wind-stroke), numbness in half of the body, complete weakness of the wrist, and trismus (lockjaw) with inability to open the mouth.
