Food enters the stomach and mostly stagnates in the Zhongwan (CV12) area. Zhongwan is the hub for containing water and grain; Shangwan (upper part of the stomach) is mainly responsible for receiving food and transporting water and grain, sending the refined and vigorous qi generated upwards to the Lung; Xiawan (lower part of the stomach) is responsible for digesting dregs and sending them into the large and small intestines. If food entering the stomach and intestines remains undigested, or if the food has been expelled but damages the transportive qi of the Spleen and Stomach, or if it causes a failure to distinguish between clear and turbid substances, all three parts of the stomach (Shang, Zhong, and Xia) will reject food. The degree of food stagnation in these three areas varies. If the pathology is heavier in the middle and lower parts, formulas such as Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) or Beiji Wan (Emergency Aid Pill) should be used; if the pathology is lighter and located in the middle and lower jiao, formulas such as Zhizhu Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill) should be used. If food remains in Shangwan without entering Zhongwan but causes severe damage, emesis should be induced to expel it. If food has entered Zhongwan and blocks the qi mechanism, causing qi to stagnate in Xiawan, resulting in the Qikou (Radial Artery at the wrist) pulse being two to three times larger than the Renying (Carotid Artery) pulse, emesis must also be induced. The Classics state: "If there is a pulse in the upper part but none in the lower part, and the patient should vomit but cannot, death will ensue." If the food has already been expelled but the primordial qi of the Spleen and Stomach is injured, then Li Dongyuan's methods for treating internal injury with tonification should be adopted. The phrase "food injury feels like something blocking the chest" does not refer to harm caused by the grains or meats themselves, but rather to excessive eating causing a failure of digestion to distinguish clear from turbid substances. Turbid fluids flow from Shangwan to the chest, accumulating to form Phlegm-Fluids (Tan Yin). This is a mild form of injury, so treatment should focus on clarifying clear and turbid substances, resolving Phlegm-Fluids, harmonizing the Middle Jiao and benefiting the Stomach, and opening up depression.
Zhu Danxi selected Zuixian San (Drunken Immortal Powder) and Zaizao San (Recreate Life Powder) to differentiate usage based on upper and lower regions. The *Neijing* states: "Pulse changes due to wind pathogen constitute Li Feng (Leprosy)." It also says: "When Wind-Cold lodges in the Lung and does not depart, it is named Li Feng." Li Feng arises because Ying and Wei Qi are hot and impure, leading to collapse of the nasal bridge, deterioration of complexion, and ulceration of the skin. It is further stated that Wind pathogen enters together with the Taiyang channel, travels through various Shu points, and scatters between the muscle layers. It interferes with Wei Qi, obstructing its pathway, thus causing lesions in the muscles and ulcers. When Wei Qi coagulates and fails to circulate, the flesh becomes insensible (Anren). The *Cijie Zhenxie Lun* states: "In cases of severe wind disease, bone joints feel heavy, eyebrows and beard fall out. Needling the muscle layer induces sweating for 100 days." (Wang Bing's commentary: To vent the stagnant heat of Wei Qi.) "Needling the bone marrow induces sweating for 100 days." (Wang Bing's commentary: To vent the stagnant heat of Ying Qi.) After a total of 200 days, eyebrows and beard grow back, and treatment stops. The *Lingshu* states: "For Li Feng, frequently needle the swollen areas with a Feng Zhen (Sharp Needle), press to expel evil qi, and stop when swelling subsides. Eat regular meals and avoid other foods." The Classics discuss distinguishing Ying and Wei thus, but ancient formulas merely mixedly vented Wind-Heat in Ying and Wei without distinguishing sequence. Only the *Huofa Jiyao* used Huapi San (Birch Bark Powder) to treat the Wei level and Ersheng San (Two Sages Powder) to treat the Ying level. Ersheng San is identical to Zaizao San, originating from the *Sanyin Fang*. The Master stated that Zaizao San uses Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome) half liang, Bai Chou (White Morning Glory Seed) six qian (half raw, half stir-fried), and Zaojiao Ci (Gleditsia Spine, preferably aged black and large). Now, selecting these two formulas to use separately according to Qi/Blood, Upper/Lower, and Sequence/Precedence. Generally, Qi is Yang and Wei; Blood is Yin and Ying. The upper half of the body is first affected by Yang pathogens; the lower half by Yin pathogens. Zaizao San treats pathology in the Yin level, using Gleditsia Spine to expel Wind-Toxin from the Ying-Blood. The Liver governs the storage of blood, and stasis belongs to the Liver. Parasites are also transformed by Jueyin Wind-Wood. Treatment must address the Zang organ qi, prioritizing parasite elimination, assisted by Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) to enter the Intestines' Ying-Blood division, promoting the purgation of stasis and parasites. Zuixian San treats pathology in the Yang level, using Niuzi (Burdock Fruit) to expel Wind-Toxin from generalized bad sores, Hema (Sesame Seed) to dispel wind, benefit the Lung, and moisten the skin, Jili (Tribulus Fruit) to treat stasis, body wind-itch, and unblock nasal qi, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) to treat various winds, Gualou Gen (Trichosanthes Root) to treat stasis and heat/swelling of the feet, Gouqi (Goji Berry) to eliminate wind-toxin heat and dissipate sores, Jingzi (Vitex Fruit) to treat thief-wind, Kushen (Sophora Root) to treat heat-toxic wind, restlessness of skin/muscle with sores, and red leprosy with eyebrow loss. These eight ingredients effectively treat wind! However, Yinfen (Calomel) must be used as an adjuvant; it is a crucial agent for descending through the diaphragm and unblocking the Large Intestine. It drives the medicinal herbs into the Yang channels, opens wind-heat stagnation and痞结 (masses), expels foul-smelling toxic qi, kills parasites, and ascends along the channels to the tender/thin parts of the teeth to expel foul saliva. This drug damages teeth; one can wipe with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) powder, or protect the teeth beforehand to neutralize Yinfen toxicity. Yinfen plays a decisive role in Zuixian San, creating its unique efficacy, unmatched by other formulas. For residual pathogens, simply add a small amount of expelling agents to formulas that harmonize Ying and Wei.
One patient had a puffy, oily face, slight swelling and discoloration, eyebrow loss, and itching. Three members of his family across two generations died of Leprosy. He was given Zuixian San, and after vomiting basin-fulls of saliva, he recovered.
Another patient had facial swelling, blackish discoloration, dry itching, loss of eyebrows and beard, dry and cracked skin on hands and feet with pus, pain and itching covering the whole body with no intact skin. Sometimes the itch penetrated to the bone marrow, scratching until bleeding provided slight relief before recurrence. He suffered from insomnia day and night. He recovered after being given these two drugs.
A female patient had ulcerated sores on both calves and lost her eyebrows. She recovered after taking one dose of Zaizao San. However, being young, she failed to abstain from sexual activity and dietary restrictions, leading to relapse after one year. The reason the previous two patients did not relapse was not because they followed regulation methods perfectly, but because their disease was shallow, the nasal bridge had not collapsed, and the sores had not ulcerated. Thus, when one contracts a disease, early treatment is essential.
