Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. Primarily treats gu poison (蛊毒), expels evil qi, kills ghosts and warm malaria (Wen Nue), and wards off misfortune. Also known as Que Piao. It is the root of She Xian, growing in Zhuya. Harvested in August, dried in the shade.
If it were indeed the root of She Xian, it should not grow exclusively in Zhuya. The herb leaves used by common people are actually a different substance; it is unclear which one is authentic. Medical arts texts state that carrying one tael of this powdered herb prevents epidemic diseases, so it is essential to distinguish the true from the false.
[Verification] This herb is indeed Que Piao. Its leaves resemble those of Metaplexis japonica (Luo Mo), with leaves growing opposite each other. The fruit resembles a ladle, about the size of a jujube, and grows in marshy plains. Both stems and leaves have an unpleasant odor. Its "She Xian root" is completely unrelated. Furthermore, *Bie Lu* states: when young, the leaves resemble Metaplexis japonica, with round tips and thick stems, black fruits, and yellowish-white sap in stems and leaves, which is similar to the previous description. If it were the root of She Xian, how could its seedlings grow in Yizhou while its roots are in Zhuya, separated by over ten thousand li? *Bie Lu* also states: the white sap of Que Piao treats insect and snake bites, which is the sap of the female Qing seedling.
It primarily treats snake venom; apply crushed herb externally. Extract juice and ingest to prevent snake venom from entering the heart and causing chest oppression. Boil in water and soak/wipe feet to reduce Qi edema.
Leaves resemble Polygonum (Liao), stems are red, pungent in flavor, growing in low, wet areas near water. (Newly Added)
Pungent and bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. Primarily treats Gan Shi (dampness-related conditions) and various malignant ulcers infested with parasites.
Leaves resemble Artemisia lavandulaefolia (Bai Hao), flowers resemble Dianthus superbus (Qu Mai), bright red and attractive, fruits resemble Vaccaria segetalis (Wang Bu Liu Xing), dark black and angular. Harvested in July and August. (Newly Added)
Sour in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats dryness and pain in the mouth, bloody dysentery from food and water, and stops bleeding. Grows on roofs in Shangdang, resembling newly sprouting Artemisia capillaris (Peng). Also known as Wa Song.
Harvested in summer, dried in the sun.
Leaves resemble Artemisia capillaris, over one chi tall, looking like planted pines from a distance, growing on old tiled roofs. (Newly Added) Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma) primarily treats heart pain and blood stasis, various facial diseases, and promotes the circulation of medicinal properties. Grows in Shu Commandery. Harvested in March.
This substance was said to originate from Ruanrui but has been extinct for a long time, and no authentic specimens exist in common practice; nowadays, people manufacture substitutes to offer as tribute.
[Verification] This substance originally came from Goryeo, now found west of [missing character] Prefecture, resembling Tian Xiong. According to *Ben Jing*, it originated in Shu Commandery, but is no longer available there. Those from Liangzhou grow in sand, with single stems, resembling Salvia miltiorrhiza (Shu Wei Cao), with leaves growing...
