Flavor pungent, nature neutral, non-toxic. Primarily treats stopping diarrhea and dysentery, eliminating heat, harmonizing the middle jiao (middle burner), benefiting spleen qi, and making one have a good complexion and pleasant spirit. Also known as Niu Tao, also known as Ying Dou. The fruit is as large as wheat, hairy. Harvested in April, dried in the shade.
This is not the cherry fruit used today; although the shape is similar, the substance is completely different. It grows occasionally in mountainous areas but is no longer used in prescriptions.
(Having great toxicity). Entering the five zang organs causes corrosion and death. Its beak primarily treats killing pit viper venom. Also known as Yun Ri. Produced in the South Sea.
These are actually two types: Zhen bird, resembling a peacock with mixed colors of five hues, tall and sturdy, black neck, red beak, produced in the deep mountains of Jiao and Guang; Yun Ri bird, resembling a black Cang chicken. They mutually prohibit nesting in rotten trees, but now they do the opposite, seeking snakes to swallow them. The sound they make resembles "Tong Li," so people in Jiangdong call it Tong Li bird, and they all eat snakes. If humans mistakenly eat its meat, they will die immediately. Zhen feathers cannot approach humans, yet both treat snake venom. Wearing the Zhen beak can also repel snakes. In ancient times, poison wine was made using Zhen feathers, hence the name Zhen wine. This is no longer done recently. It is also said that there is a creature, red in color, resembling a dragon, named Hai Jiang, living in the sea, which also has great toxicity; comparable to Zhen feathers.
[Respectful Investigation] This bird is abundant south of Shangzhou and between Jiang and Ling, and people are familiar with it. Its meat is fishy, toxic, and unfit for consumption. The claim that painting wine with its feathers kills people is baseless evidence. According to the *Yupian* quoting Guo Pu: The Zhen bird is as large as an eagle, with a long neck and red beak, eating snakes. Furthermore, the *Shuowen*, *Guangya*, and *Huainanzi* all state it is also known as Yun Ri. " " and "Yun" are the same. Asking people from Jiao and Guang, they say: " " is Yun Ri, also known as Zhen. This is a lie by the people of Jiao and Guang.
The above twenty species, including plants and insects/birds, were unknown to Tao Hongjing, and are also unknown to knowledgeable physicians today.
