(Sanguis Corni) Sour in flavor, neutral or slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats evil qi under the heart, alternating chills and fever, warms the middle jiao (middle energizer), expels cold-dampness bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to cold and dampness), eliminates three parasites (intestinal parasitic worms), clears wind evil from the intestines and stomach, treats chills and fever, hernia and mass (abdominal masses), head wind, fluctuating wind pathogen, nasal congestion, yellow eyes, deafness, dull complexion, warms the middle, directs qi downward, induces sweating, strengthens yin, benefits essence, calms the spirit, and promotes smooth bowel movements. Long-term use makes the body light, improves vision, enhances strength, and prolongs life. Also known as Shuzao (Shu Date), Jizu (Chicken Foot), Siyi, and Shi. Grows in valleys of Hanzhong and in Langya, Wanqu, and Cheng County of Donghai. Fruits are harvested in September and October and dried in the shade.
Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Lianxu) serves as the guiding herb; it is incompatible with Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), and Atractylodis Dispersae Radix (Fangji). Currently found on large trees in mountains near various routes, the fruits are red when first ripe but not yet dry, resembling Pittosporum Tobira (Hutui Zi), and are edible. After drying, the peel is very thin, and the fruit should be used whole including the seed.
(Evodiae Fructus) Pungent in flavor, warm or extremely hot in nature, slightly toxic. It primarily warms the middle, directs qi downward, alleviates pain, stops coughing and rebellious qi, treats chills and fever, removes dampness and blood bi syndrome, expels wind evil, opens the interstices (cou li), eliminates excess pathogens that do not dissipate, treats sudden evil invasion, epigastric and abdominal pain, rebellious qi, and benefits the five zang organs. The root kills three parasites. The white bark of the root kills Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), treats throat bi with coughing and rebellious qi, stops diarrhea, resolves food stagnation, and treats residual blood after childbirth in women. It treats tinea alba (white ringworm). Also known as . Grows in valleys of Shanggu and Wanqu. Harvested on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month and dried in the shade.
Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Lianxu) serves as the guiding herb; it is incompatible with Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi), and Kaolin (Baie), and fears Fluorite (Zishiyinqing). This is the current edible Evodia. The "Book of Rites" also refers to it as , while folk custom calls it KTzi, likely due to ignorance of the character , mistaking it for a similar-looking character, thus perpetuating the name. Roots growing southward or eastward are considered superior. It is also used in Daoist formulas to eliminate the three corpses (three worms causing illness).
[Note] "Erya: Shi Mu" states: Among pepper-like trees, there is Chou. Lu's "Caomu Shu" states: Among pepper-like plants, there is also a name ; Tao Hongjing was mistaken.
(Qinpi) Bitter in flavor, slightly cold or extremely cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats wind-cold-dampness bi syndrome, chilling cold sensation, clears heat, and treats green nebula and white membrane in the eyes. It treats oligospermia in men, leukorrhea in women, pediatric epilepsy, and febrile disease. It can be prepared as an eye-washing decoction. Long-term use prevents graying of hair, makes the body light, gives luster to the skin, promotes robust physique, and ensures fertility. Also known as Cenpi and Shitan. Grows in valleys of Lujiang and Wanqu. Bark is harvested in February and August and dried in the shade.
Manihoti Radix (Daji) serves as the guiding herb; it is incompatible with Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu). Folklore claims it is Fan bark, which turns blue-green when soaked in water and mixed with ink, writing remains un-faded, is thoroughly blue-green, and is quite thin, which is likely incorrect. In secular prescriptions, it is only used to treat eye diseases. Daoist practitioners also have uses for it.
[Note] This tree resembles Dalbergia (Tan). Leaves are slender, bark has white spots but is not rough or cracked. Taking the bark and soaking it in water yields a jade-green color; those written on paper appearing cyan are correct. Laypeople, seeing its bitter taste, call it Kushu (Bitter Tree) and also use its bark, which is effective for treating eyes. Because the leaves resemble Tan, it is named Shitan.
