Huai Shi (Sophorae Fructus): Bitter, sour, and salty in flavor; cold in nature; non-toxic. It primarily treats pathogenic heat within the five zang organs, stops saliva and sputum, supplements severe injuries or deficiencies, and treats five types of hemorrhoids, fire sores (burns or heat-toxin ulcers), and breast masses (leiomyomas or fibroids) in women. Crush the fruit to extract the juice, store it in a copper vessel, and boil it daily until it can be formed into pills the size of mouse droppings. Insert into the anus, changing three times for a cure. Additionally, it can induce abortion; long-term consumption brightens the eyes, boosts qi, prevents graying of hair, and prolongs life.
Huai Zhi (Sophorae Ramulus): Primarily used for washing sores and treating dampness and itching under the scrotum. Huai Pi (Sophorae Cortex): Treats ulcerating sores. Huai Gen (Sophorae Radix): Treats throat obstruction (bi-syndrome of the throat) with alternating chills and fever. The tree grows in the plains and marshes of Henan; its wood can be made into ceremonial candles.
Jingtian (Sedum Acre) serves as an guiding herb (shi-yao). Sophorae Fructus is best when clustered together; harvest on the Shangsi day in the tenth lunar month, place in a new basin, seal with mud for one hundred days until the skin rots into water and the seeds are the size of soybeans. Consumption makes the mind clear, prevents hair graying, and promotes longevity. It is now found everywhere; the text mentions harvesting immature fruits in the seventh month, hence crushing and extracting juice.
[Note]: "Bielu" records: In August, cut off large branches of the locust tree to encourage tender shoots; boil the juice to make wine, which is very effective for treating severe wind-induced atrophy and bi-syndrome. Huai Er (Sophorae Tremella/Sophora Bark Fungus): Bitter and pungent; neutral in nature; non-toxic. Treats heart pain caused by five types of hemorrhoids and vaginal itching/pain in women. It is a fungus growing on the locust tree; select those hard like Auricula Auricula (Wood Ear). Roasted and hot-compressed Sophorae Ramulus can stop scorpion venom toxicity.
Chu Shi (Broussonetiae Fructus): Sweet in flavor; cold in nature; non-toxic. Treats impotence and edema, boosts qi, nourishes the skin, and brightens the eyes. Long-term consumption prevents hunger, delays aging, and keeps the body light and agile. Grows in Mount Shaoshi; also known as Gu Shi; available in various regions. Harvest fruits in the eighth and ninth lunar months, sun-dry for forty days to process. Chu Ye (Broussonetiae Folium): Sweet; non-toxic. Treats childhood fever and failure to gain muscle mass from poor diet; can be used as a bath decoction. Also treats malignant sores to promote tissue regeneration. Chu Pi (Broussonetiae Cortex): Promotes water metabolism and diuresis. Chu Jing (Broussonetiae Caulis): Treats urticaria (hives) and itching; boil alone for bathing. The white sap between the bark treats tinea (ringworm).
This is the seed of the paper mulberry tree today. Immortal methods involve crushing and extracting juice to mix with elixirs, or taking it dry, which allegedly allows one to see spirits. Southerners call it Gu Zhi (paper mulberry paper), also written as Chu Zhi, pronounced "Chu." People in Wuling use paper mulberry bark to make clothing, which is very durable.
