[Ophibii Exuvies]
Taste: salty, sweet. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: pediatric convulsions and epilepsy (Xianxian) of one hundred and twenty types, spasms (Chouyuan), epilepsy (Dianji), alternating chills and fever, intestinal hemorrhoids, insect poisoning, snake-induced epilepsy, tongue protrusion and head shaking, five pathogenic factors in adults causing speech deviation, severe sores, vomiting and coughing, improving vision. Firing calcination is effective. Also known as Longzi Yi (Dragon Child's Garment), Shefu (Snake Amulet), Longzi Pi (Dragon Child's Skin), Longzi Danyi (Dragon Child's Single Garment), Gongpi (Bow Skin). Grows in valleys and fields of Jingzhou. Collected on the fifth and fifteenth days of the fifth lunar month are best.
Averse to Magnetitum (Cishi) and wine. In grasslands, exuvies of Hui (viper) and Fu (pit viper) are rarely seen; those that are longer mostly belong to Elaphe carinata (Chi Lianshe) or Peltopelma flavogulare (Huangheshe), whose skins are unrecognizable. What is often obtained now is of this kind, and must be complete. Those from rocks are better; when burned, they treat various severe sores.
(Newly Added)
Indications: heart pain, Zhuxu (infectious disease transmission), lithiasis (Shilin), difficult labor, pediatric convulsions and epilepsy. Decoct in water, grind, and take the juice. Originates from Lingnan, obtained from snake bellies, round and heavy like tin, with mixed yellow, black, and green colors.
[Wugong]
Taste: pungent. Nature: warm. Toxicity: toxic. Indications: Guizhu (ghostly infection), Gudus (gu poison), envenomation by snakes, insects, fish, etc., eliminating evil spirits and old essences, Wenmalaria (warm malaria), expelling three parasites. Treats cold-heat nodules in the heart and abdomen, induces abortion, removes bad blood.
Grows in the valleys of Jiangnan, Dawu. Those with red heads and feet are good.
Currently, those with red feet mostly come from Jingkou; Changshan, Gaolishan, and Maoshan also have many. Obtained from rotting accumulated grass, avoid injury, and dry in the sun.
People from Huang region roast them over fire until red to pass them off as genuine, which is not authentic. Also known as Ququ. Zhuangzi stated: "Ququ eats snakes." Huainanzi stated: "The flying snake rides the mist but is endangered by Ququ." Its nature can subdue snakes; upon seeing a large snake...
[Note] People in Shandong call the spider "Ququ," which is likely a linguistic error. Zhuangzi's mention of "Ququ eats snakes" and Huainanzi's "flying snake endangered by Ququ" both refer to Wugong (Scolopendra).
[Malu]
Taste: pungent. Nature: warm. Toxicity: toxic. Indications: large hard masses in the abdomen, breaking accumulations and growths, severe sores, white tinea capitis (Baitu). Treats cold-heat stagnation and fullness in the hypochondrium.
Also known as Baizu (Hundred Feet), Mazhou (Horse Axle). Grows in the valleys of Xuantu.
Li Yun states this insect is five or six inches long, resembling a large cricket, climbs trees to sing in summer, hibernates in winter. People today call it a flying insect, but it may not be Malu. Currently, there is a slender yellow insect, resembling Wugong but much longer, commonly called Tucheng (Earth Insect); chickens become intoxicated and even die after eating it. Books say: "The insect with a hundred feet does not stiffen upon death." This insect has many legs; if broken inch by inch, each part moves independently, appearing similar. Physicians no longer use it, and merchants do not value it; it is unclear which is the true specimen.
[Note] This insect is as thick as a fine brush tube, three to four inches long, with mottled color like Scutigera (Youyan). People in Xiangyang call it Ma..., also Mazhou, also named...
