[Mercury (Shuiyin) Entry]
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. It primarily nourishes the five Zang organs, calms the mind and spirit, stops palpitations and fright, expels pathogenic factors, and long-term use can make the body light and prolong life. Produced in Yongchang, collected at any time.
The source of silver is also the same as that of gold, but both are produced from stones. The method of refining and taking them internally is also similar. Currently, medical prescriptions use it when compounding Zhenxin Wan (Calming Heart Pill), but it cannot be taken directly. To make silver powder, one should grind it with mercury until it dissolves. Yongchang originally belonged to Yizhou. Now it belongs to Ningzhou, which is extremely far away and no longer submits tribute. The "Immortal Canon" also contains records of ingestion and refining methods; however, this [silver] likely lacks primary therapeutic effects, so it is not recorded in the "Bencao". In ancient times, gold was called Huangjin (Yellow Metal/Gold), silver was called Baijin (White Metal/Silver), and copper was called Chijin (Red Metal/Copper). Copper now exists in raw and refined states; refined copper is soft and red, while the "Shennong Bencao Jing" does not record its use. Current Tongqing (Copper verdigris) and large coins are all raw copper and should fall under the category of lower-grade herbs.
[Note] Silver and gold have different sources; gold also comes from water. When physicians use silver powder, they should take ready-made thin silver sheets, dissolve them into a paste using mercury. Mix with saltpeter and salt, grind into powder, heat to extract mercury, wash away the salt and stones, resulting in an extremely fine powder, which is best for use. Only if unavoidable should one grind to obtain flakes. Moreover, silver is found everywhere, but that from Guozhou is superior; others often contain impurities like tin and are inferior. Korean-made silver foil claims not to come from silver mines, yet its luster repels evil and is considered an auspicious object.
[Mercury (Shuiyin) Entry Continued]
Pungent in flavor, cold in nature, toxic. It primarily treats scabies and itching, crusty sores, tinea capitis (white baldness), kills insects and lice in the skin, induces abortion, and clears heat. Applied to the male genitals, it causes genital atrophy and loss of vital energy. It kills the toxicity of gold, silver, copper, and tin, melting them back into cinnabar. Long-term use leads to immortality. Also known as Geng (Mercury). Produced in flat lands of Fuling, originating from Zhusha (Cinnabar).
It fears Magnetite (Cishi). Currently, mercury exists in raw and refined forms. What is described here as produced in the flat lands of Fuling refers to that extracted from within Cinnabar, or separately from sandy soil; both are bluish-white and of the highest quality. That derived from Cinnabar is obtained by burning coarse Cinnabar powder today; it is pale white and turbid, inferior to the raw form. It effectively dissolves gold and silver into a paste, which people use for plating. Returning to become cinnabar is a matter recorded in the "Immortal Canon". Mixed with wine and sun-dried, it can be taken for longevity. The ash that flies up and adheres to the pot during heating is named Gongfen (Mercury powder), commonly called Shuiyinhui (Mercury ash), which is most effective against lice.
[Note] Mercury originates from Cinnabar due to heat; there is no hearing that it naturally emerges from within Cinnabar. The method of extraction by fire and sublimation is understood by everyone. People in the south also use steaming to extract it, yielding less mercury than fire extraction, without damaging the Cinnabar, only causing a slight darkening of color.
