[Skin of Crucian Carp] Mainly treats various sores and ulcers. It can be burned to ash, mixed with sauce, and applied topically, or fried in lard (pig fat) for use. It also treats intestinal abscess (Chang Yong). Ash from the carp head treats infant scalp sores, oral ulcers, and double tongue syndrome. Carp soup treats weak stomach function and inability to eat. Fermented fish paste treats chronic dysentery with red and white discharge. (Newly added content)
[Fuyi / Bat] Salty flavor, neutral nature, non-toxic. Treats blurred vision, itchy and painful eyes, cures strangury (Lin), promotes urination, brightens vision, and allows clear night vision. Long-term consumption brings joy, enhances attractiveness, and eliminates worry. Also known as Bat (Fuyi). Grows in mountains and valleys of Tai Mountain and other regions, as well as under eaves of houses. Harvested after Start of Summer, dried in shade. Facilitated by Amaranthus Seed (Xianshi) and Cloud Real (Yunshi). The eyes and gallbladder of Fuyi are used by alchemists for "cave-seeing" techniques; only those that are white and hang upside down should be consumed.
[Editor's Note] Fuyi is named so because it hides during the day and has wings. *Li's Materia Medica* states: it is the Heavenly Mouse; also mentions another Heavenly Mouse in Xiping Mountains, harvested in November and December, treating postpartum residual diseases, leukorrhea, and infertility. In dialects, it is also called Immortal Mouse, living in mountain holes, feeding on essence of various mineral stones, living up to a thousand years, having a crown on its head, pure white like a turtledove or magpie, consuming it makes one robust and healthy, extending life span. Those the size of a quail live less than a hundred years but also hang upside down. Their feces in stone holes are white like rat droppings. The Heavenly Mouse feces mentioned in the next entry should refer to this. Consuming one square-cun spoonful of its feces ash with wine treats fetal death in the womb. Its brain treats facial melasma in women; consuming it prevents forgetfulness.
[Tianshushi / Rat Droppings] Bitter flavor, neutral nature, non-toxic. Treats five types of hemorrhoids, genital erosion, bloody discharge of five colors, continuous bleeding, genital swelling, pain radiating to the lower back. Boiled in wine to kill parasites/toxins, also treats abdominal pain and hernia masses. Can also be burned to ash and taken with wine. Grows in fields and valleys of Chu region. Harvested at any time, keep dry.
Synergistic with wine; antagonistic with Platycodon Root (Jiegeng) and Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong). This beast is found in fields; when approached by humans, it hides its head and feet, its fur prickles the skin making it hard to catch, and it claims to be able to jump into a tiger's ear. However, upon seeing a magpie, it exposes its belly to be pecked. Mutual control among things is inconceivable. Its fat, when melted and poured into iron with a little mercury, becomes soft like lead-tin alloy.
[Editor's Note] Tianshushi is extremely fierce and dull-witted, large ones like piglets, small ones like melons. Some dislike magpie sounds, hence exposing their bellies to be pecked to capture them, similar to the snipe and clam. Tigers do not accept chicken eggs in their ears; moreover, being three feet off the ground, how could they jump in? This is a vulgar folk tale recorded in elegant texts, which is deeply strange.
