[Chitou]
Taste: salty. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Head wind (wind-pathogen affecting the head) causing vertigo, and sudden-onset epilepsy. It refers to what common people call "old Chou" (owl), also known as Yuan (kite). The character "Yuan" is pronounced as "lv". There are also Diao (vulture) and E (osprey), which resemble it but are larger in size. Although gender is not strictly limited, the male is likely more potent. In current preparations of Chitou wine, the material should be slightly roasted before use; those infested by insects should be avoided.
[Shimi]
Taste: sweet. Nature: neutral, slightly warm. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Evil qi (pathogenic factors) in the heart and abdomen, various types of fright-induced epilepsy, stabilizing the five Zang organs and addressing various deficiencies, tonifying Qi and supplementing the middle Jiao, relieving pain and detoxifying, eliminating numerous diseases, and harmonizing various medicinal herbs. Nourishes Spleen Qi, relieves mental restlessness, treats difficulty in eating and drinking, stops intestinal rumbling and pain, alleviates muscle pain, treats mouth ulcers, and clarifies the ears and eyes. Long-term consumption strengthens willpower, lightens the body, prevents hunger, delays aging, extends lifespan, and leads to an immortal-like state. Also known as Shi Yi. Originates from valleys in Wudu, Heyuan, and among rocks in various mountains; those with a white color like paste are of superior quality.
Shimi is also called Yami (cliff honey). It is produced by bees on high mountain rocks, appearing green or red in color, with a slightly alkaline taste; consumption may cause mental restlessness. The bees producing this honey are black and resemble horseflies. There is also Mumi (tree honey), referred to as Shimi (edible honey), produced hanging from tree branches, appearing greenish-white. Some are produced in hollow trees or kept by households, also white and thick, with a sweet taste. All bee-produced honey undergoes processing similar to making maltose syrup. There is also Tumi (earth honey), produced in the soil, appearing greenish-white with an alkaline taste.
Currently, the honey from Tan Ya in Jin'an is mostly Tumi, considered the best. Honey from Linhai in Dongyang is mostly Mumi; honey from Qian County and Huaian County is mostly Yami, though often mixed with Mumi or household-bred honey. These are frequently adulterated, rarely pure, requiring careful personal selection to ensure purity. Moreover, they are often over-processed by boiling. Honey from regions west of the Yangtze River is mostly Mumi, heavily adulterated, and unsuitable for medicinal use. Daoist pill formulations invariably require it. Immortal prescriptions also recommend taking refined single-honey to achieve longevity and immortality.
[Note] Tumi originates from the Di-Qiang regions and surpasses the previously described varieties. Tao Hongjing used southern earth honey as evidence because he had not seen the northern variety. Currently, white honey near the capital resembles solidified butter, is sweet, delicious, and durable, completely replacing the need for Jiangnan honey. Another account states that some now produce a substance called Shimi by boiling rock sugar with water buffalo milk. Since this original Shimi is bee-produced, the character "Shi" (stone) should be removed. Regarding the subsequent entry on Beech Wax (Mila), it should be referred to simply as such.
